When someone you love is sick, the instinct to pray is immediate.
But sometimes, the questions come just as fast:
Am I praying the right way? Should I trust doctors or just trust God? What if nothing changes: does that mean God didn't hear me?
At Boundless Online Church, we believe what the Assemblies of God has always taught: God still heals today. It's one of our cardinal doctrines: Fundamental Truth #12: and we don't back away from it.
But we also believe in praying with wisdom, walking in compassion, and recognizing that faith and medicine aren't enemies.
Let's talk about what it looks like to pray for healing the way Jesus modeled it: with courage, clarity, and care.

What the Assemblies of God Teaches About Divine Healing
Here's the foundation:
The Assemblies of God affirms that divine healing is provided in the atonement of Christ and is a privilege for all believers today (Isaiah 53:4-5, Matthew 8:16-17, James 5:14-16).
That means:
Healing is part of the gospel.
Jesus didn't stop healing when He ascended: He empowered the Church to continue His work.
We pray in faith, expecting God to move.
But here's what we don't teach:
That faith = instant results every time.
That sickness is always a sign of personal sin or weak faith.
That seeking medical care shows a lack of trust in God.
At Boundless Online Church, we see healing happen regularly: and we also walk with people through long seasons of suffering, trusting God's goodness even when answers are delayed.
This is the balance the Assemblies of God has always held: bold faith and pastoral wisdom.

How to Pray for Healing (Without Pressure or Pretending)
So what does a wise, faith-filled prayer for healing actually look like?
1. Start with Scripture
Ground your prayers in God's Word.
Try these passages:
James 5:14-15 – "Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord."
Psalm 103:2-3 – "Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits: who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases."
Jeremiah 17:14 – "Heal me, Lord, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved, for you are the one I praise."
Praying Scripture keeps you anchored in truth and reminds you of God's character.
2. Pray with Honesty
God isn't offended by your fear, confusion, or desperation.
He wants your real heart: not religious performance.
Say what you feel:
"God, I'm scared. I don't understand why this is happening. But I know You're good, and I'm asking You to heal them."
Jesus welcomed the desperate (Mark 5:25-34), the doubting (Mark 9:24), and the grieving (John 11:32-35).
He'll welcome you too.
3. Invite the Church to Pray
The Assemblies of God has always emphasized corporate prayer: because healing isn't just individual, it's communal.
At our church, we gather regularly for prayer where people bring their needs, lay hands on one another, and believe together.

Faith + Medicine: Why You Don't Have to Choose
One of the most freeing truths the Assemblies of God teaches is this:
Seeking medical care does not contradict faith in divine healing.
God heals through miracles: and He also heals through doctors, medicine, surgery, and rest.
Think about it:
Luke was a physician and a disciple (Colossians 4:14).
Paul told Timothy to take wine for his stomach (1 Timothy 5:23): a medical remedy of the time.
Jesus Himself used physical means (mud, spit, touch) in some healings.
At Boundless Online Church, we've watched God work through chemo and through prayer meetings.
We've seen tumors shrink after aggressive treatment and after anointing with oil.
We don't pit faith against wisdom: we hold both.
So here's your permission slip:
Go to the doctor. Take the medicine. And keep praying bold prayers.
God is big enough to work through all of it.
What to Do When Healing Doesn't Come Immediately
This is the hard part.
You prayed. The church prayed. You believed. And nothing changed: or it got worse.
Here's what we hold onto at Boundless Online Church:
1. God's Timing Isn't Always Our Timing
Some healings happen instantly (Acts 3:1-10).
Others take time (2 Kings 5:10-14).
And some won't come until the resurrection (2 Corinthians 5:1-5).
That doesn't mean God abandoned you: it means His plan is bigger than what we can see right now.
2. Unanswered Prayer Doesn't Mean Unheard Prayer
God always hears (Psalm 34:17).
He always cares (1 Peter 5:7).
And He's always working: even when we can't trace His hand.
3. You're Not Alone in the Wait
At our church, we don't just pray once and move on.
We walk with people through the whole journey: hospital visits, meal trains, follow-up prayers, and honest conversations about grief, doubt, and hope.
Because faith isn't about pretending everything's fine.
It's about trusting God in the middle of what's hard.

A Simple Prayer You Can Pray Today
If you're reading this and someone you love needs healing, here's a prayer you can start with:
"Father, I come to You believing You are good and that You heal.
I ask You to touch [name]. Bring restoration to their body, peace to their mind, and strength to their spirit.
Guide the doctors. Steady the hands that care for them. Let every treatment work the way it should.
And if there's something only You can do: God, do it.
I trust You. I thank You. I surrender this to You.
In Jesus' name, Amen."

Final Thought: God Is Still in the Healing Business
The Assemblies of God has never wavered on this:
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8).
If He healed then, He heals now.
At Boundless Online Church, we've seen it: cancer reversals, broken bones healed overnight, mental health restored, relationships mended.
And we've also sat with families in ICU waiting rooms, praying through tears, trusting God's goodness even when the outcome wasn't what we hoped.
Both are real.
Both require faith.
And both are held in the hands of a God who loves us more than we can imagine.
So keep praying.
Keep believing.
And keep walking in wisdom.
