Do I Have to Be Perfect to Come to Church?

No. You don’t have to be perfect to come to church—Jesus is perfect for you. You come as you are, and you bring the honest version of you. We don’t gather because we’re righteous on our own; we gather because we need His grace, His healing, and His presence.

Why This Question Matters (Especially Here in Memphis)

Around Memphis and the 901—Cordova, Bartlett, Germantown, and everywhere in between—I meet so many people who feel like church is only for “good people.” Like you have to clean up first. Or like your past makes you a bad fit.

But at First Assembly Memphis and Boundless Online Church, we want you to hear this clearly: everyone is welcome. Not because we’re lowering the standard, but because Jesus already met the standard.

And that’s deeply Pentecostal, too—because we believe the Holy Spirit still changes lives today. Not by shame. Not by pressure. By grace, conviction, and real transformation.

Church Isn’t a Museum—It’s a Hospital

One of the simplest ways I can say it is this:

  • A museum is where you look at perfect stuff you’re not allowed to touch.

  • A hospital is where you bring what’s broken and get help.

Church is a hospital for the hurting. You don’t apologize to the doctor for being sick—you show up because you need healing.

And spiritually speaking, we all need it.

What Does Scripture Actually Say?

Jesus said it straight in Luke 5:31–32:

“It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”

That’s the heartbeat of the gospel. Jesus came for sinners. He calls us to repentance—not to humiliate us, but to rescue us.

And here’s the best news: our standing with God isn’t built on our performance. It’s built on

Christ’s righteousness.

Romans 5:8 reminds us:

"While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."

Ephesians 2:8–9 makes it plain:

"By grace you have been saved… not by works."

So no—perfection isn’t the entry requirement. Faith is.

Grace and Redemption (Not Shame and Pretending)

When people say, “Come as you are,” sometimes they mean, “Stay as you are.”

That’s not what Jesus does.

In an Assemblies of God church, we believe Jesus saves us by grace and then begins a real, lifelong work of sanctification—changing us from the inside out. And we believe the Holy Spirit empowers believers to live a new life.

So here’s the balance:

  • Grace says, “You’re welcome right now.”

  • Truth says, “God loves you too much to leave you stuck.”

  • Redemption says, “Your story isn’t over.”

If you’re battling addiction, lust, anxiety, bitterness, shame, or just feeling far from God—you’re not disqualified. You’re exactly the kind of person Jesus came for.
