Evergreen Faith : Baptism Explained: What It Means for Your Walk with Jesus

What is the significance of Christian baptism?

Baptism is a public declaration of your personal identification with Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection, symbolizing your transition from a life of sin to a new life dedicated to following Him. It serves as an outward sign of an inward grace, marking your official entry into the global body of Christ and acting as a vital step of obedience in your spiritual journey.

Bible Verses on Baptism

Matthew 28:19-20 (NIV) "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

Romans 6:3-4 (NIV) "Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life."

Acts 2:38 (NIV) "Peter replied, 'Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.'"

Understanding the Step of Baptism

Baptism is one of the most beautiful and significant moments in the life of a believer. It’s more than just a ritual or a tradition; it’s a milestone that marks a "before" and an "after." If you’ve been following our journey here at Boundless Online Church, you know we’re all about helping people meet Jesus and grow in their faith, no matter where they are in the world.

When we talk about baptism, we’re talking about a public "yes" to Jesus. It’s like a wedding ring. The ring doesn’t make you married, the covenant and the commitment do, but the ring tells the whole world who you belong to. Baptism is that outward sign that you belong to the King of Kings.

The Symbolism of the Water

There is a profound power in the imagery of water. In the Bible, water often represents both cleansing and judgment, but in the context of baptism, it primarily represents a burial and a resurrection.

When you are lowered into the water, it symbolizes the "death" of your old self. All the mistakes, the weight of sin, and the old way of living are left behind in that watery grave. As the apostle Paul wrote in Romans, we are "buried with Him."

But we don't stay under the water. We are raised up out of it. This represents the new life we have in Jesus. Just as Jesus was raised from the dead by the power of the Father, we are raised to walk in a brand-new way of living. It’s a spiritual "fresh start."

Why Do We Baptize?

At Boundless Online Church, we align with the Assemblies of God 16 Fundamental Truths. One of those truths identifies baptism in water as an ordinance of the Church. We don't do it because it’s a good idea or a nice religious habit; we do it because Jesus commanded it.

In Matthew 28, often called "The Great Commission," Jesus gave His followers a clear set of instructions. He told them to go, make disciples, and baptize them. By choosing to be baptized, you are walking in direct obedience to the Lord. It is your first major step of discipleship after choosing to follow Him.

It’s important to remember the sequence of faith. Baptism doesn't "save" you in the sense that the water has some magical power. Salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ alone. We believe that first, you believe in your heart and confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord. Baptism follows that decision as a celebration of what God has already done inside of you.

Baptism and the Online Community

You might be wondering, "How does baptism work for an online church?" It’s a great question. Since we are a Content Creator ministry focusing on global reach, our community is spread out across different time zones and continents.

While we meet digitally, the physical act of baptism remains a physical necessity. We handle this in a few ways:

  1. Local Connection: We often encourage our online members to find a local, Bible-believing church in their area where they can be immersed. Even though you are part of our online family, being part of a local expression of the Body of Christ is a huge win.

  2. Special Gatherings: Occasionally, our leadership or community members organize regional meet-ups where we can celebrate these milestones together in person.

  3. Digital Testimony: Even if your physical baptism happens locally, we love to share those stories! Recording a video or sharing a photo of your baptism with our online community allows us to cheer you on and celebrate your new life in Christ together.

Is Baptism for Everyone?

We believe that baptism is for anyone who has made a conscious, personal decision to follow Jesus. This is why we typically practice "believer's baptism."

If you were baptized as an infant, many people find that being baptized again as an adult is a powerful way to confirm the faith they have now chosen for themselves. It’s not about "undoing" what happened when you were a baby; it’s about making a personal declaration of your own current commitment to Jesus.

If you have questions about whether you’re "ready," the answer is usually simpler than you think. Have you decided to follow Jesus? Have you asked Him to be the Lord of your life? If the answer is yes, then you are ready. You don’t need to be a "perfect" Christian first. None of us are! Baptism is about His perfection, not ours.

Walking the Walk

After the water dries, the journey continues. Baptism is a starting line, not a finish line. It’s the beginning of a lifelong "walk" with Jesus. This means daily spending time in His Word, talking to Him in prayer, and staying connected with other believers.

A Prayer for New Life

Lord Jesus, I thank You for the gift of new life. I thank You that because of Your death and resurrection, I don't have to stay stuck in my old ways. Thank You for the opportunity to declare my faith through baptism. I ask that You would give me the courage to take this step of obedience. Wash me clean, fill me with Your Spirit, and help me to walk closely with You every single day. I belong to You. Amen.
