The Morning Mirror: Why Does Your Soul Feel So Heavy at 7:00 AM?
We’ve all been there. The alarm goes off, and before your feet even hit the floor, your mind is already racing at 100 miles per hour. You check your phone: a news headline, a stressful work email, a notification from a biller: and suddenly, the peace you were supposed to have after a night's sleep is gone. It’s replaced by a cold, familiar knot in your stomach.
This isn't just "stress." For many of us in the Memphis area and around the world, it’s a spiritual battle for the first few minutes of our day. We wake up into a world that feels like it’s on fire, and if we aren't careful, we let that fire consume our peace.
But there is a different kind of fire.
The Refining Fire of God doesn't consume you; it cleanses you. It’s the heat of His presence that burns away the "dross": the worries, the "what-ifs," and the pressure to perform: until all that is left is the gold of His character in you. To trade morning panic for peace, you have to decide that you will no longer bow down to the "God of Busy."

Step 1: No Bowing Down to the Digital Idol
The most common way we lose our morning peace is by giving our first "worship" of the day to our smartphones. When you check your notifications before you check your heart, you are essentially bowing down to the demands of the world.
In the Assemblies of God tradition, we talk a lot about "No Bowing Down." It’s the spirit of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. They refused to bow to the golden image of the king, even when the furnace was heated seven times hotter.
Today, the "furnace" is the pressure of social media, the grind of the 9-to-5, and the constant noise of a culture that tells you that you aren't doing enough. If you want God’s peace, you have to refuse to bow.
Try this today: Keep your phone in another room or on "Do Not Disturb" until you have spent at least ten minutes in the Word. Don't let the world's fire get to you before God's fire gets in you.
Step 2: Stoke the Refining Fire through Prayer
Prayer isn't just a list of things you want God to do for you. It’s a process of purification. When we talk about the Refining Fire, we are talking about Malachi 3:2, which asks, "Who can endure the day of his coming? For he will be like a refiner’s fire."
When you start your morning in prayer, you are stepping into that refiner's fire. You are saying, "Lord, burn away my fear. Burn away my need for control. Burn away my frustration with that person at work."
As you pray, you aren't just talking; you are listening. You are letting the Holy Spirit fill the empty spaces that anxiety usually occupies. This is where the trade happens. You give Him your panic; He gives you His presence.
