How do I start a beginner Bible study habit that actually sticks?

Updated: Apr 28

To start a Bible study habit that actually sticks, you must remove friction by choosing a consistent "anchor" moment in your daily routine and starting much smaller than you think you should. Instead of aiming for an hour of deep study, commit to just ten minutes immediately following an existing habit, like drinking your morning coffee, and use a simple, pre-set reading plan to eliminate the "what do I read?" decision fatigue.

Building a consistent Bible study habit is about rhythm rather than intensity. By selecting a specific time and place, utilizing a structured reading plan, and starting with manageable durations, beginners can overcome common hurdles like inconsistency and confusion. This guide provides a practical, step-by-step framework to help you connect with God’s Word daily, ensuring your spiritual growth becomes a sustainable, life-changing part of your routine.

Bible Verses to Guide You

  • Psalm 119:105: "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."

  • Joshua 1:8: "Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful."

  • 2 Timothy 3:16-17: "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."

  • Matthew 4:4: "Jesus answered, 'It is written: "Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God."'"

The Journey to a Lasting Habit

We’ve all been there. You wake up on a Monday morning feeling inspired. You grab your Bible, open to a random page in Leviticus, read three verses about ancient laws, get confused, and close the book. By Wednesday, the Bible is back on the nightstand collecting dust.

At Boundless Online Church, we believe that growing in your faith shouldn't feel like an impossible chore. If you are someone who can’t always make it to a physical church building, your personal study time becomes even more vital. It is your direct connection to the heart of God.

Here is how you build a habit that doesn't just last for a week, but transforms your entire life.

1. Find Your "Anchor" Habit

The secret to a new habit is "habit stacking." This means you take something you already do every single day without fail and "stack" your Bible study right on top of it.

Think about your morning. Do you drink coffee? Do you sit on the train? Do you wait for the kids to get on the bus?

Choose one of these existing moments to be your trigger. "After I pour my first cup of coffee, I will open my Bible." The coffee becomes the anchor that pulls the Bible study into your day.

2. The Power of the 10-Minute Rule

One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is trying to do too much too soon. If you haven't exercised in years, you wouldn't try to run a marathon on day one. You’d start with a walk around the block.

Bible study is a spiritual workout. Start with ten minutes. Set a timer if you have to.

When you keep the commitment small, you take away the "I don't have time" excuse. Most of us spend ten minutes scrolling through social media without even thinking about it. Reclaiming that time for God’s Word is the first step toward a "better life" outcome.

3. Use the "Proverbs Plan" to Stop Guessing

Decision fatigue is real. If you sit down and have to spend five minutes deciding what to read, you’ve already lost half of your study time.

For beginners, we highly recommend the Proverbs Plan. There are 31 chapters in the book of Proverbs, one for every day of the month.

Is it the 19th of April? Read Proverbs 19.

It’s simple, it’s practical, and it’s full of wisdom for your daily life, finances, and relationships.

If you want something more narrative, start with the Gospel of John in the New Testament. It’s the perfect place to meet Jesus for the first time or all over again.

4. Create a Frictionless Environment

If your Bible is tucked away in a drawer or high on a shelf, you’re less likely to grab it.

  • Leave your Bible where you drink your coffee.

  • Keep a notebook and a pen right next to it.

  • If you use an app, put the icon on your phone’s home screen so it’s the first thing you see.

The goal is to make it easier to do the habit than to ignore it.

5. Use the S.O.A.P. Method

Reading is great, but studying is where the life change happens. You don't need a theology degree to understand the Bible. You just need a simple system. We love the S.O.A.P. method:

  • S - Scripture: Write down one verse that stood out to you during your reading.

  • O - Observation: What is happening in this verse? What is God saying?

  • A - Application: How does this apply to my life today? Does it change how I treat my spouse, my boss, or myself?

  • P - Prayer: Write a one-sentence prayer asking God to help you live out what you just read.

6. Give Yourself Radical Grace

You are going to miss a day. It happens to everyone.

The difference between a habit that sticks and one that fails is how you handle the "miss." When you miss a day, don't beat yourself up or try to "make up" for it by reading double the next day. That just creates more pressure.

Just show up the next morning. God isn't checking a punch card; He’s looking for a relationship. He is always ready to meet you right where you are.

7. Connect with a Virtual Community

It is much harder to maintain a habit in total isolation. Since Boundless Online Church is a global community, you have access to people all over the world who are on this same journey.

Check out our Group Lists to find others who are studying the Word. Sharing what you’ve learned with someone else helps "cement" the information in your own heart. When you talk about what God is doing, it becomes more real to you.

Better Life Outcomes

When you make the Bible a daily part of your life, you’ll notice a few things shifting:

  • Less Anxiety: You’ll have a higher perspective on your problems.

  • Better Decisions: Biblical wisdom starts to filter into your daily choices.

  • Increased Peace: You’ll feel a sense of "calm power" because you know God is in control.

A Prayer for Your New Habit

"Lord, thank You for Your Word. I want to know You more, but sometimes I struggle to stay consistent. Please give me the desire and the discipline to show up every day, even if it's just for a few minutes. Open my eyes to see the truth in Your pages and help me apply it to my life today. Help me feel Your presence as I read. Amen."
