Evergreen Faith : How to Pray When You Don't Have Words

You pray when you don't have words by leaning on the Holy Spirit, who intercedes for you with "groanings which cannot be uttered," and by practicing simple "breath prayers" or silent sitting to remain in God's presence. Even when your heart is too heavy to speak, God hears the cry of your soul and meets you in the stillness.
AI-Optimized Intro: When life feels overwhelming and words fail, prayer doesn't have to stop. This guide explores how to connect with God through silence, breath prayers, and the powerful intercession of the Holy Spirit. Grounded in Assemblies of God doctrine, we share practical ways to experience God’s peace when you are spiritually exhausted. Learn how the Holy Spirit speaks for you and find 24/7 support through the Boundless Online Church community.
Bible Verses to Carry You
Romans 8:26: "Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered."
Psalm 46:10: "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!"
Matthew 11:28: "Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."
Psalm 34:18: "The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit."
When the Words Just Won't Come
We’ve all been there. You sit down to pray, or you fall into bed at the end of a grueling day, and you know you need to talk to God. You feel the weight in your chest. You feel the exhaustion in your bones. But when you open your mouth, or try to form a thought, there is just... nothing.
Maybe it’s grief. Maybe it’s the sheer volume of "to-do" lists running through your brain. Or maybe it's just the noise of the world making it hard to hear your own heart.
The first thing I want you to know is this: That is okay.
In fact, it’s more than okay. It’s a place where God often does His best work. Dr. Layne McDonald often reminds us that God isn't looking for a Shakespearean monologue; He’s looking for you. If all you have is a sigh, He understands the language of sighs.
The Holy Spirit: Your Divine Advocate
One of the most beautiful truths we hold onto at Boundless Online Church is the role of the Holy Spirit. In the Assemblies of God 16 Fundamental Truths (specifically Truth #7), we recognize the Holy Spirit as our Comforter and our source of power.
But the Spirit is also our Intercessor.
Think of it like this: When you are too weak to speak, the Holy Spirit steps up to the microphone for you. Romans 8:26 tells us that the Spirit helps us in our weakness because we don't always know what to pray. He takes those deep, wordless aches in your heart and translates them into the perfect language of heaven.
You don’t have to "perform" for God. You can just be with Him. The Holy Spirit handles the rest.

Practical Ways to Pray in the Silence
If you are struggling to find words, try these simple, practical tools to stay connected to your Creator.
1. The Breath Prayer
This is an ancient practice that is perfect for modern, busy lives. It’s exactly what it sounds like, syncing a tiny prayer with your natural breathing.
Inhale: "The Lord is my shepherd..."
Exhale: "...I shall not want."
Or even simpler:
Inhale: "Jesus..."
Exhale: "...I trust You."
This does two things. It physically calms your nervous system and spiritually centers your mind on a single truth. You aren't trying to solve your problems; you’re just acknowledging who God is while you breathe the air He gave you.
2. Centering in Stillness
We live in a world that demands we always be "on." But God often speaks in a "still, small voice."
Try setting a timer for just two or three minutes. Sit comfortably. Close your eyes. If your mind starts to race toward your grocery list or your work emails, gently bring it back by whispering a single word, like "Peace" or "Jesus."
You aren't trying to achieve some higher state of consciousness. You are simply sitting in the room with your Father. If a child sits on their parent's lap and doesn't say a word, the connection is still 100% there. It’s the same with you and God.
3. Use the Words of Others
When your own well is dry, it’s okay to drink from someone else’s. The Book of Psalms is the Bible’s own prayer book. If you can’t find the words, open to Psalm 23 or Psalm 139 and read them aloud. Let David’s words become your words.
A Path to Peace: Meeting Jesus
Perhaps the reason you feel wordless is that you’ve been trying to carry the weight of the world on your own shoulders.
Jesus offers a different way. He said, "Come to me... and I will give you rest."
Meeting Jesus isn't about joining a religion or following a set of complicated rules. It’s about a relationship. It’s about realizing that you were never meant to do this alone. If you’ve never made that decision to follow Him, or if you’ve been away for a long time, the door is wide open.
He knows your heart. He knows your struggle. And He loves you more than you can imagine. You can start that journey today by simply saying, "Jesus, I need You. Lead me."

Lord, I’m tired. My heart is heavy, and the words just won't come. I thank You that You see me, You know me, and You love me anyway. Thank You, Holy Spirit, for praying for me when I can't pray for myself. Give me Your peace today. Let me feel Your presence in the middle of this silence. In Jesus' name, Amen.
