Evergreen Faith : The Church and Its Mission AG Truth 10

A Message from FA Memphis

The Church is far more than a physical building or a weekly event; it is a living, breathing body of believers empowered by the Holy Spirit. According to Assemblies of God Fundamental Truth #10, the Church’s mission is fourfold: to worship God, to build up believers, to evangelize the world, and to show Christ’s compassion. We exist to help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online.

What the Bible Says

Before we dive into the "why" and "how" of the Church, let’s look at the foundational scriptures that define our mission:

  • Matthew 28:19-20 (NIV): "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

  • Ephesians 4:11-13 (NIV): "So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ."

  • 1 Corinthians 12:13 (NIV): "For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body: whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free: and we were all given the one Spirit to drink."

  • James 1:27 (NIV): "Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world."

Understanding the Mission

When we talk about "The Church," it’s easy to picture a steeple or a sanctuary. But at Boundless Online Church, we know that the Church is the people. Whether you are a shift worker catching a service at 2:00 AM, a family caregiver who can't leave the house, or someone living in an area where attending a physical church isn't safe, you are part of this "Evergreen Faith."

Assemblies of God Truth #10 breaks down the mission of the Church into four distinct, yet overlapping, priorities. Let’s walk through them together.

1. A People of Worship

The first part of our mission is to provide a "corporate body" where we can worship God together. Worship isn't just about the music or the sermon; it’s about acknowledging who God is. Even in a digital space, when we gather online, we are creating an altar of praise. We believe that God inhabits the praises of His people, whether those people are in a physical pew or sitting in a hospital breakroom.

2. A People of Growth (Edification)

The second mission is "edification." That’s a big word that basically means building each other up. The Church is meant to be a place where we are "perfected in the image of His Son." This happens through teaching, community, and discipleship.

If you’re looking to dive deeper into what it means to grow in this community, you might find our Assemblies of God Membership 101 post helpful. Growth doesn't happen in isolation. It happens when we join together in Bible Study Clubs or participate in Men's Bible Studies.

3. A People of Evangelism

The "Great Commission" in Matthew 28 is the heartbeat of our outreach. The Church is an agency for evangelizing the world. This is why we are "Boundless." We want to reach the 901 area code and beyond, ensuring that every person has an opportunity to hear the Good News.

For those in Memphis, this often means looking at how we can practically help our city. We’ve explored questions like how churches can help reduce crime because we believe that sharing the Gospel includes bringing peace and restoration to our local communities.

4. A People of Compassion

Finally, the Church is called to demonstrate God’s love and compassion for all the world. This is the "hands and feet" of Jesus. It’s about meeting physical and emotional needs. It’s about being there when Memphis feels shattered or when someone is searching for faith in the quiet hours. Compassion is the visible proof of our invisible faith.

Why This Matters for You

You might be wondering, "How do I fit into this mission?"

Maybe you’ve felt like the traditional church model doesn’t have a place for your schedule or your lifestyle. But AG Truth #10 reminds us that the Holy Spirit empowers every believer to be part of this mission. Whether you are volunteering as a digital leader or simply sharing a blog post with a friend, you are fulfilling the mission of the Church.

The Church is meant to be "Evergreen": meaning it stays fresh, alive, and relevant through every season of history and every technological shift. We aren't bound by walls; we are bound by the Spirit. Our mission is to ensure that the light of Christ reaches the darkest corners of the world, and that includes the digital spaces you inhabit every day.
