Evergreen Faith : The Trinity Explained - One God in Three Persons

A Message from FA Memphis

The Trinity is the foundational Christian belief that one God eternally exists as three distinct Persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. While the word "Trinity" isn't in the Bible, the concept is woven through Scripture. This doctrine reveals God’s relational nature, showing He is one in essence yet three in personhood, co-equal and co-eternal, working together for our redemption and spiritual growth.

Bible Verses to Ground Our Hearts

To understand the Trinity, we start with the Word of God. Here are a few key passages that highlight the unity and the distinctness of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit:

Deuteronomy 6:4 (NKJV) "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one!"

Matthew 28:19 (NKJV) "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit."

2 Corinthians 13:14 (NKJV) "The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen."

Matthew 3:16-17 (NKJV) "When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, 'This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.'"

Understanding the One True God

Talking about the Trinity can feel a bit like trying to hold the ocean in a bucket. It’s huge, it’s mysterious, and it stretches our minds. At Boundless Online Church, we align with the Assemblies of God 16 Fundamental Truths, specifically "The One True God."

We believe that the one true God has revealed Himself as the eternally self-existent "I AM," the Creator of heaven and earth and the Redeemer of mankind. He has further revealed Himself as embodying the principles of relationship and association as Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

It isn't that we have three Gods. We are monotheists, we believe in one God. But this one God exists in three "Persons."

When we use the word "person," we don't mean that God is three different humans. We mean that each has a distinct center of consciousness. The Father is not the Son, the Son is not the Spirit, and the Spirit is not the Father. Yet, they are all the same one God.

The Roles Within the Trinity

While the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are equal in power and glory, they often reveal themselves to us through different roles in our lives and in history.

God the Father The Father is often seen as the source of all things. He is the Creator and the one who initiated the plan of salvation. He is the "sending" one. He loved the world so much that He gave His only Son.

God the Son (Jesus) Jesus is God in the flesh. He is the Word made manifest. He is the one who walked our earth, felt our pain, died for our sins, and rose again. He is our Redeemer. He shows us exactly what God is like because He is God. If you want to know the heart of the Father, look at the life of Jesus.

God the Holy Spirit The Holy Spirit is our Comforter, our Helper, and our Guide. He is the one who convicts us of sin, empowers us for service, and dwells within every believer. He makes the presence of Jesus real to us today. You can learn more about how this works in our post What Does Pentecostal Mean.

God is Love Because God is Trinity

One of the most beautiful things about the Trinity is what it tells us about God’s character. The Bible says, "God is love."

If God were just a single person existing in isolation before time began, who would He have loved? Love requires an object. Because God is a Trinity, He has been "loving" within Himself for all eternity. The Father loves the Son, the Son loves the Spirit, and the Spirit honors the Father.

God is not a lonely deity who created us because He was bored or needed a friend. He is a perfect community of love. When He created us, He invited us into that relationship.

We were made in the image of a relational God, which is why we crave community and connection. This is why we place such a high value on our Bible Study Club and other groups. We are meant to reflect the relational nature of our Creator.

Common Misconceptions

When trying to explain the Trinity, it’s easy to accidentally fall into some common misunderstandings.

1. Modalism (The "Masks" Theory) Some people think God is like a man who is a father at home, a boss at work, and a son to his own parents. While this sounds simple, it’s not quite right. In that analogy, the man is only one person playing different roles. But in the Bible, we see the Father talking to the Son, and the Spirit descending on the Son. They are distinct persons existing at the same time.

2. Tritheism (The "Three Gods" Theory) This is the idea that the Father, Son, and Spirit are three separate gods who just happen to work together. But Scripture is very clear: "The Lord our God, the Lord is one." There is only one divine essence.

3. Subordinationism This is the idea that Jesus or the Holy Spirit are "lesser" than the Father. While Jesus submitted to the Father’s will during His time on earth, in His nature, He is fully God. All three are co-equal in power and eternity.

Practical Faith: Living in the Trinity

Why does this matter for your daily life? Why isn't this just a "theology nerd" topic?

Because every part of your Christian walk involves the whole Trinity.

  • When you pray, you are usually praying to the Father, in the name of the Son, by the power of the Holy Spirit.

  • When you read Scripture, the Spirit opens your eyes to see the glory of Christ, who leads you to the Father.

  • When you serve, you are using gifts given by the Spirit to build up the Body of Christ for the glory of God.

Understanding the Trinity reminds us that we are never alone. Whether you are a shift worker on a break, a caregiver in a quiet house, or someone seeking God in a place where it isn't safe to be a Christian, the entire Godhead is involved in your life. The Father is watching over you, the Son is interceding for you, and the Spirit is living within you.

A Prayer for Understanding

Heavenly Father, we thank You for revealing Yourself to us. Thank You for Your love as our Father, for the redemption found in Your Son, Jesus, and for the constant presence of Your Holy Spirit. Help us to grow in our understanding of who You are. May the mystery of Your nature not drive us away, but draw us closer into the relationship You created us for. Guide our hearts and minds as we seek to walk with You every day. In Jesus' name, Amen.
