A Message from FA Memphis
The Virgin Birth is a foundational cornerstone of Christian theology, asserting that Jesus Christ was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. This miraculous event ensures Jesus’ dual nature as fully God and fully man, qualifying Him as the sinless Savior. Understanding this doctrine is essential for grasping the authority, deity, and redemptive power of Jesus Christ in our lives today.
The Scriptural Foundation
Before we dive into the "why," let’s look at the "what" as recorded in the Word of God. These verses form the bedrock of what we believe about the entrance of Jesus into our world.
Isaiah 7:14 (NIV)
"Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel."
Matthew 1:21-23 (NIV)
"She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins. All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 'The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel' (which means 'God with us')."
Luke 1:34-35 (NIV)
"'How will this be,' Mary asked the angel, 'since I am a virgin?' The angel answered, 'The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.'"
More Than Just a Christmas Story
When most of us think about the Virgin Birth, our minds immediately go to nativity scenes, candlelight services, and stable backdrops. It’s a beautiful story, but for those of us walking the path of faith, it is so much more than a seasonal tradition. In the Assemblies of God, we recognize the Virgin Birth as a vital component of our Second Fundamental Truth: The Adorable Deity of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
If you’ve ever wondered why we make such a big deal about this, you’re not alone. It’s a supernatural concept that defies biological norms. But that’s exactly the point. If Jesus were just another man born in the ordinary way, He could be a great teacher or a moral philosopher, but He couldn't be the Savior of the world. The Virgin Birth is the moment heaven and earth collided in the most literal sense.

The Logic of a Miracle
Why did God choose this specific way for Jesus to enter the world? It wasn't just for the "wow" factor. There is a deep, spiritual logic behind it.
To understand the Virgin Birth, we have to look back at the beginning. The Bible teaches that through Adam, sin entered the world, and that "sin nature" has been passed down through every generation. We are all born into a broken condition. If Jesus had been born through two human parents, He would have inherited that same brokenness, that same "sin debt."
By being conceived by the Holy Spirit, Jesus bypassed the inheritance of sin. He was born into our world, into our skin, and into our struggles, but without the internal pull toward sin that we all face. This is what made Him the "Lamb of God without blemish." He had to be like us to represent us, but He had to be different from us to save us.
Fully God and Fully Man
This is where things get really exciting. Because of the Virgin Birth, Jesus is unique in all of history. He is "Theanthropos", the God-Man.
As a man, He got hungry. He got tired. He felt the sting of betrayal and the physical pain of the cross. Because He was fully human, He can empathize with everything you are going through today. He isn’t a distant deity who doesn’t "get" what it’s like to be human. He’s been here.
As God, He has the power to forgive sins, to calm storms, and to defeat death itself. If He were only a man, His death on the cross would have been a tragedy, but it wouldn't have been a sacrifice for the sins of the world. Because He is God, His sacrifice has infinite value. It covers every mistake, every regret, and every person who calls on His name.

Why This Matters for You Today
You might be thinking, "That’s great theology, Penny, but how does this help me on a Tuesday morning when life is falling apart?"
It matters because it proves that God is a promise-keeper. Hundreds of years before Jesus was born, Isaiah prophesied that a virgin would conceive. God managed every detail of history to make sure that promise came true. If God is that intentional about a prophecy made centuries in advance, you can trust that He is just as intentional about the promises He has made to you.
The Virgin Birth also reminds us that with God, nothing is impossible. Mary’s question in Luke 1:34 is one we’ve all asked in different ways: "How will this be?" How will I pay these bills? How will this relationship be healed? How will I find peace?
The answer the angel gave Mary is the same answer for us: "The Holy Spirit will come on you... for no word from God will ever fail." The Virgin Birth is a standing invitation to believe in the supernatural power of God to move in your "impossible" situations.
A Savior Who Truly Knows You
At Boundless Online Church, we talk a lot about meeting Jesus where you are. The Virgin Birth is the ultimate example of God doing exactly that. He didn't stay in heaven and shout instructions down to us. He came down. He took on a body. He lived in a neighborhood.
Because of the Virgin Birth, we have a High Priest who can sympathize with our weaknesses. Whether you are working the night shift, caring for a loved one in hospice, or searching for answers in a world that feels increasingly chaotic, you have a Savior who is "God with us", Immanuel.
He is not a distant concept; He is a present reality. You can find more about His life and teachings in our Sunday Sermons or dive deeper into the Word through our Clarion Call Bible Study.

Wrapping It Up
The Virgin Birth isn't just a point of doctrine to be argued; it’s a truth to be celebrated. It’s the proof that God loves us enough to come for us. It’s the guarantee that the Jesus we follow is exactly who He said He was.
As we continue to explore the truths that shape our faith, let this one sink deep into your heart: You are served by a Savior who is holy enough to save you and human enough to love you.
