Evergreen Faith : Understanding the Role of the Holy Spirit

A Message from FA Memphis

The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity, acting as a divine Comforter and Guide. For believers seeking to deepen their walk, understanding the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is essential. This experience, distinct from salvation, provides spiritual power for witnessing and holy living, fulfilling the "promise of the Father" as outlined in Assemblies of God core doctrine and the book of Acts.

Bible Verses

Acts 1:8 (NIV) "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

Luke 24:49 (NIV) "I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high."

Acts 2:4 (NIV) "All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them."

John 14:16-17 (NIV) "And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever, the Spirit of truth."

More Than a Feeling: Meeting the Holy Spirit

When we talk about "Evergreen Faith," we’re talking about a faith that doesn't wither. It’s a relationship with God that stays fresh, vibrant, and productive regardless of the season. But let’s be real: staying "evergreen" on our own strength is impossible. We get tired. We get distracted. We run out of words when we try to share our faith.

That’s where the Holy Spirit comes in.

One of the biggest misconceptions about the Holy Spirit is that He is some sort of "vague force" or a "ghostly influence." In reality, the Holy Spirit is a Person, the third Person of the Trinity. He has a mind, emotions, and a will. He isn't just a power source we plug into; He is a Friend and a Guide who wants to walk through life with us.

At Boundless Online Church, we want to help you move past the "mystery" and into a practical, daily relationship with the Spirit. If you’ve ever felt like your spiritual life was missing a "spark," you aren't alone. That spark is exactly what Jesus promised us before He ascended to heaven.

The Promise of the Father: AG Truth #7

In our series on the Assemblies of God Fundamental Truths, Truth #7 focuses on the Baptism in the Holy Spirit.

Here is the core of it: All believers are entitled to, and should ardently expect, the promise of the Father. This isn't a "bonus" for super-Christians or something reserved for people in the "professional" ministry. It is the normal experience for everyone in the church.

It’s important to understand that this experience is distinct from salvation. When you choose to follow Jesus, the Holy Spirit performs the work of "regeneration", He gives you a new heart. You belong to God. But the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is an additional experience. Think of it like this: Salvation is like getting a brand-new car; the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is like filling the tank with high-octane fuel. You have the car either way, but the fuel allows you to go the distance and perform the way the Designer intended.

Why Do We Need the Baptism?

You might be wondering, "If I’m already saved, why do I need this?"

The primary purpose of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is power for service. In Acts 1:8, Jesus didn't say the Spirit would come to make us feel good (though He is the Comforter!). He said the Spirit would come to make us witnesses.

The Holy Spirit gives us:

  1. Boldness: The same Peter who denied Jesus three times became the man who preached to thousands on the Day of Pentecost. That change wasn't a personality shift; it was Spirit-empowered boldness.

  2. Spiritual Gifts: The Spirit bestows gifts, like wisdom, healing, and prophecy, to help us build up the church and help others.

  3. Deeper Prayer: Sometimes, we don't know how to pray. The Spirit intercedes for us, helping us communicate with God on a level that goes beyond our own limited vocabulary.

  4. A Passion for the Lost: The Spirit aligns our hearts with God’s heart, giving us a genuine love for people who haven't met Jesus yet.

Living a Spirit-Led Life

The Holy Spirit isn't just for the big, "mountain-top" moments. He is for the Tuesday morning commute, the difficult conversation with a coworker, and the quiet moments of parenting.

This is the "Evergreen" part of our faith. When we are filled with the Spirit, we produce "fruit", love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. These aren't things we can fake for very long. They are the natural result of the Spirit living and moving through us.

If you’re feeling dry or stuck, it might be time to ask for a fresh infilling. The beautiful thing about God is that He is a generous Giver. He isn't holding out on you. If you are a believer looking to grow, the "promise of the Father" is sitting right there, waiting for you to ask.

Practical Steps to Seeking the Spirit

Seeking the Baptism in the Holy Spirit isn't about jumping through hoops or following a complex formula. It’s about posture and hunger.

  • Ask: Simply ask God to fill you. Luke 11:13 says, "If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"

  • Wait: Sometimes we live life at such a fast pace that we don't leave room to listen. Spend some time in quiet worship or prayer.

  • Receive: Faith is the key. Believe that God wants to empower you for the mission He has placed on your life.

Whether you’re a shift worker catching this post at 3:00 AM or a caregiver looking for a moment of peace, know that the Holy Spirit is available to you right where you are. You don't need to be in a specific building to experience His presence. That’s the heart of Boundless Online Church, reaching you wherever life happens.

Growing Together

We are all on this journey together. No one has "arrived" when it comes to the things of God. We are all constantly learning how to better listen to the Spirit’s promptings and how to walk in the power He provides.

If you want to dive deeper into these topics, check out our Online Programs or join one of our Group Lists. We believe that faith grows best in community, even when that community is digital.

And hey, if you want to represent the community while you’re out and about, grab a Stainless Steel Water Bottle or a Unisex Tri-Blend T-Shirt from our store. It’s a small way to stay connected to the mission.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of Your Holy Spirit. We thank You that we don't have to live this life on our own strength. We ask right now for the "promise of the Father." Fill us with Your Spirit. Give us the power to be witnesses in our homes, our workplaces, and our communities. Give us boldness to share Your love and the fruit of the Spirit to show Your character. We open our hearts to everything You have for us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
