Evergreen Faith : What Does the Bible Say About Anxiety?

A Message from FA Memphis

The Bible provides a roadmap for moving from chronic worry to lasting peace by trusting in God’s presence and promises. Scriptural wisdom encourages believers to cast their anxieties on Christ, lean on the Holy Spirit for a sound mind, and focus on God’s sovereignty rather than tomorrow’s uncertainties. Trading fear for peace involves surrendering control and resting in the assurance that God cares for every detail of your life.

Finding Stillness in a Loud World

It happens to all of us. You’re lying in bed at 2:00 AM, and your mind starts racing. You’re thinking about the bills, that awkward conversation at work, or the "what ifs" of the future. Anxiety doesn't just feel like a thought; it feels like a weight in your chest.

If you’re feeling that weight today, I want you to know something right away: You aren't alone, and having anxiety doesn't mean you lack faith. Even the most devoted followers of Jesus have faced moments of deep distress.

In our Evergreen Faith Library, this is Question 56: What does the Bible say about anxiety?

The short answer? God knows it's hard, and He has provided a way through it. He doesn't just tell us to "stop worrying"; He offers us a trade. He takes our fear, and in return, He gives us His peace.

What the Bible Says

Before we dive into how to manage these feelings, let's look at what God’s Word actually says. These aren't just "nice quotes", they are spiritual anchors.

2 Timothy 1:7 "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind."

Philippians 4:6-7 "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

1 Peter 5:7 "Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you."

Matthew 6:34 "Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."

Proverbs 3:5-6 "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."

Fear Is Not Your Identity

One of the most important things to realize is that fear is not from God. As we see in 2 Timothy 1:7, God gives us a spirit of power, love, and a sound mind.

At Boundless Online Church, we hold tightly to the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God. One of those truths (Truth #8) focuses on the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. Why does that matter for anxiety? Because the Holy Spirit is our Comforter. He provides the "power" and "sound mind" we need when our thoughts feel chaotic.

When anxiety tells you that you are weak, the Bible says you are empowered. When anxiety tells you that you are alone, the Bible says you are loved. When anxiety creates a fog in your mind, the Holy Spirit offers clarity.

The "Trade" of Prayer

Philippians 4:6-7 gives us a very practical "how-to" guide for dealing with worry. It tells us to present our requests to God with thanksgiving.

That might sound strange. Why be thankful when you’re stressed?

Gratitude shifts our focus. Anxiety forces us to look at our problems; thanksgiving forces us to look at our Provider. When we pray, we aren't just listing our problems to a distant God. We are handing them over to a Father who is already in our future.

The promise that follows is incredible: a peace that "transcends all understanding." This means you can have peace even when your circumstances haven't changed yet. You can be in the middle of a storm and still feel a deep, quiet confidence because you know who is in the boat with you.

Living One Day at a Time

Jesus was very practical when He spoke about worry in the Sermon on the Mount. In Matthew 6, He pointed out the birds and the flowers, reminding us that if God takes care of them, He will certainly take care of us.

His advice was simple: Focus on today.

Anxiety is almost always lived in the future. It’s about the "tomorrow" that hasn't happened yet. But God’s grace is provided for today. When we try to solve tomorrow's problems with today’s strength, we get overwhelmed.

If you’re a shift worker, a caregiver, or someone living in an isolated area, this "one day at a time" mindset is a survival skill. God isn't asking you to figure out the next ten years. He’s asking you to trust Him for the next ten minutes.

Trusting God’s Heart

Sometimes we are anxious because we think everything depends on us. We lean on our "own understanding," as Proverbs 3 says.

But our understanding is limited. We only see a small part of the picture. Trusting God means acknowledging that He sees the whole thing. He is sovereign, which is a big church word that just means He is in control.

Whether you are new to faith or have been following Jesus for years, surrendering that control is a daily practice. It’s why we gather for Sunday Sermons and dive into the Clarion Call Bible Study. We need to constantly remind ourselves of who God is so that our fears don't grow larger than our faith.

Practical Steps to Trade Fear for Peace

  1. Name the Fear: Tell God exactly what you are afraid of. Don't be vague.

  2. Use Scripture as a Shield: When a worried thought enters your mind, speak a verse like Isaiah 41:10 out loud.

  3. Stay Connected: Isolation feeds anxiety. Join a group, like our Bible Study Club, to stay grounded in community.

  4. Breathe and Pray: Take a moment to simply breathe and acknowledge the Holy Spirit's presence with you right where you are.

A Prayer for Your Peace

Lord, I come to You right now on behalf of the person reading this. You know the weight they are carrying. You know the thoughts that keep them up at night. I ask that right now, in this moment, Your Holy Spirit would bring a sense of "calm power" into their heart. Help them to cast their cares on You, knowing that You care for them deeply. Replace their spirit of fear with Your spirit of power, love, and a sound mind. Give them the strength to trust You for today and leave tomorrow in Your hands. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
