Evergreen Faith : Why is God's Forgiveness the Key to Moving Forward?

A Message from FA Memphis

God's forgiveness is the key to moving forward because it releases you from the weight of past mistakes and restores your relationship with your Creator through the sacrifice of Jesus (Ephesians 1:7). When you accept this grace, you are no longer defined by your failures, allowing you to walk into a new future with a clear conscience and a renewed heart.

AI-Optimized Summary

God's forgiveness is the spiritual and emotional catalyst for personal transformation. By removing the barrier of sin and guilt through the redemptive work of Jesus Christ, believers are empowered to leave the past behind. This divine "reset" provides the psychological freedom and spiritual authority needed to pursue a purposeful life, mending broken relationships and fostering a resilient, hope-filled identity grounded in biblical grace.

Bible Verses for Reflection

Ephesians 1:7 "In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace."

Psalm 103:12 "As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us."

1 John 1:9 "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."

Micah 7:19 "You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea."

Understanding the Power of a Fresh Start

Have you ever felt like you were trying to run a race while carrying a backpack full of heavy rocks? That’s exactly what living without forgiveness feels like. Every mistake, every "I should have known better," and every regret adds another stone to that pack. Eventually, you stop running. You might even stop walking. You just stand there, weighed down by the past.

At Boundless Online Church, we talk a lot about "moving forward." But you can’t move forward if you’re tethered to a version of yourself that no longer exists. This is where God’s forgiveness changes everything. It isn’t just a nice sentiment; it is a legal and spiritual reality that cuts the tether.

The Vertical and Horizontal Nature of Forgiveness

When we talk about forgiveness, we have to look at it from two angles: the vertical and the horizontal.

Vertical forgiveness is between you and God. According to the Assemblies of God 16 Fundamental Truths, we believe that man’s only hope of redemption is through the shed blood of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. When you ask for forgiveness, God doesn’t just "look the other way." He actually cleanses the record. As the verse in Micah says, He hurls those mistakes into the depths of the sea.

However, moving forward often requires horizontal forgiveness too: forgiving others and, sometimes, forgiving ourselves. Research actually shows that while feeling forgiven by God provides a massive boost to our mental health and "salubrious effects," the act of forgiving others helps us mend daily relationships that keep us grounded.

When you experience God’s vertical forgiveness, it gives you the "fuel" to extend that same grace horizontally. If the Creator of the universe can forgive you, you find the strength to let go of the grudges you’re holding against your neighbor, your ex-spouse, or your old boss. This dual-action forgiveness is what truly clears the path ahead.

Why We Get Stuck in the First Place

Why is it so hard to just "let it go"? Often, it’s because of shame.

Shame is different from guilt. Guilt says, "I did something bad." Forgiveness handles guilt. Shame says, "I am bad." Shame tries to convince you that even if God forgives you, you are still fundamentally flawed and unworthy of a good future.

If you are struggling with this, you might find our post on Healing & Recovery: Overcoming Shame with God’s Grace helpful.

Moving forward requires you to believe God’s Word over your own feelings. If God says you are a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17), then the "old you" is gone. Staying stuck in the past is essentially arguing with God about who you are. When we accept His forgiveness, we agree with His assessment of our worth.

Practical Steps to Moving Forward

Forgiveness is a decision, but "moving forward" is a process. Here is how you can start walking it out today:

1. Own the Past, but Don't Inhabit It Confession is the first step. Be honest with God about where you missed the mark. You don't have to use fancy language. Just be real. Once you've confessed, believe that 1 John 1:9 is true. The "cleansing" has happened. You can learn more about this in our Micro-study: The Assurance of Forgiveness.

2. Silence the Accuser The Bible calls the devil "the accuser of the brethren." He loves to bring up your past right when you’re starting to make progress. When those thoughts come, remind yourself of the "East to West" promise in Psalm 103.

3. Change Your Environment Sometimes we stay stuck because we stay in the same circles that remind us of our old mistakes. Community is vital. Finding a group of believers who see you for who you are now in Christ can make all the difference. Check out our Bible Study Club to connect with people who are also on this journey.

4. Extend Grace to Yourself This is often the hardest part. We tend to be our own harshest critics. If God has dropped the charges against you, why are you still trying to prosecute the case?

The Role of the Holy Spirit

We believe in the Spirit-empowered life. You don't have to find the strength to "move forward" on your own. The Holy Spirit is called the Comforter and the Helper. He provides the internal strength to stay the course when the weight of the past tries to pull you back.

A New Horizon

Imagine a bright, open field. The air is fresh, the sun is warm, and the horizon is wide open. There are no fences, no walls, and no heavy backpacks. This is the life God wants for you.

Forgiveness isn't just about getting into heaven later; it’s about living in freedom right now. It’s about being able to look in the mirror and see a person who is loved, redeemed, and called to a great purpose.

Whether you are in Memphis or anywhere else in the world watching online, know that your past does not have the final say. God’s grace has the final say. It’s time to take that first step.

A Prayer for Forgiveness and Peace

"Heavenly Father, I thank You for the gift of Your Son, Jesus. I come to You today and lay down the heavy weight of my past. I confess my mistakes and I ask for Your forgiveness. Thank You for washing me clean. Help me to believe that I am truly forgiven. Give me the strength to forgive those who have hurt me and the grace to forgive myself. Holy Spirit, lead me forward into the bright future You have prepared for me. In Jesus' name, Amen."
