FA Memphis Connection: What Does Memphis Music Teach Us About Morning Praise?

Memphis music teaches us that morning praise is a soulful, honest, and resilient expression of faith that focuses the heart for the day ahead. By blending the emotional depth of Memphis gospel with the "here-and-now" hope of soul music, we can start our day with spiritual authority and joy.

The Rhythm of the 901: Why We Sing in the Morning

If you’ve ever walked down Beale Street as the sun begins to peek over the Mississippi, or if you’ve spent any time in the neighborhood churches of Cordova, Bartlett, or South Memphis, you know that this city doesn't just have a sound, it has a soul. Memphis is the birthplace of a music that didn't just entertain; it testified.

For many of us, the 5 AM hour can feel like a mountain to climb. But in the 901, we have a heritage that tells us the best way to face the dawn is with a song. Memphis music, from the early gospel quartets to the legendary soul singers at Stax Records, was born out of a need to speak truth to struggle and joy to the journey. When we bring that same "Memphis heart" to our morning praise, we aren't just singing lyrics; we are setting the spiritual atmosphere for our entire day.

The Gospel Foundation: A Spirit-Filled Heritage

Before there was soul, there was the "Holy Ghost" fire of Memphis gospel. In the early 20th century, churches like East Trigg Avenue Baptist and the Church of God in Christ (COGIC) became incubators for a sound that was intensely personal and Spirit-led.

The Spirit of Memphis Quartet and writers like Lucie Campbell didn't just sing about a "pie-in-the-sky" future. They sang about "how to get through each day." This is the essence of morning praise. It’s about inviting the Holy Spirit into the immediate needs of your Tuesday morning, your commute on I-40, your meetings in Germantown, and your family’s breakfast table.

Psalm 100:1-2 commands us: “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing.” In Memphis, "joyful noise" isn't a suggestion; it's a way of life. When we start our 5 AM daily faith launch with a song, we are following in the footsteps of those who knew that singing is a form of spiritual warfare and a declaration of God’s sovereignty.

Soul Music: The Testimony of the Morning

As the gospel sound evolved into what we now know as Memphis Soul, artists at Stax and Hi Records took that church-bred intensity and brought it to the world. They taught us that "soul" is simply the deep, raw emotional honesty of a person who has seen God’s faithfulness in the midst of a storm.

When you listen to a classic Memphis soul track, you hear the "call and response." One voice cries out, and another answers. In our morning praise, this is exactly what happens. We call out to God with our praise, and through His Word and His Spirit, He responds with peace, clarity, and strength.

Ephesians 5:19 encourages us to speak to one another “in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.” Memphis music reminds us that the melody in your heart shouldn't be hidden. It should be poured out. Whether you’re a classically trained vocalist or you can barely hold a note, your morning praise is a testimony that God is still on the throne.

Why Morning Praise Matters for Your Day

Why do we emphasize the "Morning Praise" in our Daily Faith Launch? Because your first words of the day have the power to frame your perspective.

  1. It Shifts Your Focus: Instead of scrolling through news or social media first thing, praise directs your eyes toward the Creator.

  2. It Builds Resilience: Just as the blues and soul music helped people endure through hard times, morning praise builds a "spiritual muscle" that helps you stay grounded when challenges arise.

  3. It Invites God’s Presence: We believe that God inhabits the praises of His people. When you sing, you are inviting the atmosphere of Heaven into your home.

The 5 AM Challenge: Start with a Memphis Anthem

We want to challenge every member of our FA Memphis family and our global Boundless Online community to take the Morning Praise Challenge.

For the next seven days, before you check your emails, look at the weather, or even start the coffee pot, start with one song of praise.

  • Step 1: Pick Your Anthem. It could be a classic hymn, a contemporary worship song, or a soulful gospel track that reminds you of God’s power.

  • Step 2: Sing Before You Scroll. Don't let the world's noise get to you first. Let your voice (or even your quiet humming) be the first thing the atmosphere hears.

  • Step 3: Testify of Gratitude. After the song, say one thing you are thankful for today.

By the time you hit the streets of Memphis or log on to your workday, your heart will be tuned to a different frequency, the frequency of faith.

Defining Our Worship

To help us stay biblically anchored, let’s look at two key terms that define our walk with Christ:

Term

Biblical Definition

Worship

The act of attributing supreme worth to God. It involves our whole life, but is often expressed through song, prayer, and obedience.

Sanctification

The lifelong process, led by the Holy Spirit, of being set apart for God’s purposes and becoming more like Jesus in our character and actions.

A Prayer for Your Morning

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gift of a new day in the 901 and across the world. We thank You for the legacy of music and faith that runs through the veins of Memphis. Today, we choose to make a joyful noise. We choose to let our morning praise be a testimony of Your goodness. Fill us with Your Holy Spirit as we go out into our city and our digital communities. In Jesus' name, Amen.
