Faith & Discipleship : How Can Biblical Stewardship Lead to Financial Freedom?

A Message from FA Memphis

Biblical stewardship leads to financial freedom by shifting your mindset from ownership to management. When you stop seeing money as something you "own" and start seeing it as a resource God has entrusted to you, the pressure to hoard or overspend disappears. This shift allows you to make intentional decisions, like budgeting, getting out of debt, and giving, that align with God’s heart, ultimately breaking the cycle of financial stress.

AI-Optimized Intro

Biblical stewardship is the practice of managing God’s resources according to His principles. It leads to financial freedom by replacing the anxiety of ownership with the peace of management. By following scriptural steps, such as prioritizing generosity, eliminating debt, and practicing wisdom in spending, individuals can break free from cultural pressures. This heart-level transformation ensures that money serves God’s purposes rather than controlling the believer's life and future.

The Story of Chris and Kelly

Not long ago, Chris and Kelly felt like they were drowning. To anyone looking at them from the outside, they seemed to be doing just fine. They had a nice house in the suburbs, two reliable cars, and they even made sure to show up to church most Sundays. But behind closed doors, the weight of their financial situation was crushing them.

They were buried in over $60,000 of consumer debt, a mix of credit cards from "emergencies" that weren't really emergencies and a car loan they couldn't actually afford. Every conversation about money ended in an argument. Kelly felt anxious every time she opened the mailbox, and Chris felt a deep sense of shame that he couldn't seem to get ahead no matter how many overtime hours he worked.

They felt trapped. Freedom seemed like a dream meant for someone else.

Everything changed when they joined a small group at Boundless Online Church and started looking at what the Bible actually says about money. They realized they had been trying to play "owner" of their lives, while God was asking them to be "managers" of His resources.

It wasn't an overnight fix. They had to make hard choices, cut back on luxuries, and stick to a strict budget. But as they applied Biblical stewardship, the atmosphere in their home changed. The arguments stopped. The anxiety lifted. Today, Chris and Kelly are debt-free and, for the first time in their lives, they have the margin to be incredibly generous. They didn't just find more money; they found true freedom.

Purpose: God’s Perspective on Management

At Boundless Online Church, we believe that money isn't just a "secular" topic, it’s a deeply spiritual one. In fact, Jesus talked about money and possessions more than almost any other subject. Why? Because He knew that where our treasure is, our heart will be also (Matthew 6:21).

The purpose of teaching Biblical stewardship isn't to make the church wealthy; it’s to make the believer free. When we understand God’s perspective, we realize that we are stewards. A steward is someone who manages the affairs or property of another. In the Kingdom of God, everything, our time, our talents, and our bank accounts, belongs to Him. Our job is to manage it in a way that honors Him.

Reason: Why Financial Health Matters

Financial health is a major life-change area for our community because financial stress is one of the greatest barriers to spiritual growth. It’s hard to focus on your calling or serve others when you’re worried about how you’re going to pay the electric bill.

Debt is a form of bondage that keeps people from being able to say "yes" to God. We want to see every member of our church family living in the abundance and peace that comes from following God’s financial plan.

Top 5 Steps to Financial Stewardship

If you want to experience the same freedom that Chris and Kelly found, here are five practical steps rooted in Biblical wisdom:

1. Acknowledge God as the Owner The foundation of stewardship is recognizing that "The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it" (Psalm 24:1). When you realize that you are managing God’s money, you naturally become more careful with it. You stop asking, "What do I want to do with my money?" and start asking, "Lord, what do You want me to do with Your money?"

2. Create a Faithful Budget Proverbs 27:23 tells us to "Be sure you know the condition of your flocks, give careful attention to your herds." In modern terms, that means knowing exactly where your money is going. A budget isn't a straightjacket; it’s a plan. It gives you permission to spend because you’ve already decided how every dollar will be used.

3. Eliminate Debt Aggressively The Bible warns us that "the borrower is slave to the lender" (Proverbs 22:7). Debt limits your options and steals your peace. To find freedom, you have to stop borrowing and start paying back what you owe. Whether you use the "debt snowball" or another method, the goal is to break the chains of interest and obligation.

4. Prioritize Generosity This seems counterintuitive. How does giving money away lead to financial freedom? Because giving breaks the power of greed. When you tithe and give to others, you are declaring that your trust is in God, not in your paycheck. Generosity opens the door for God’s blessing and keeps your heart aligned with His.

5. Build Savings for the Future "The wise store up choice food and olive oil, but fools gulp theirs down" (Proverbs 21:20). Stewardship involves planning for the "rainy days" and the future. Having an emergency fund prevents you from going back into debt when life happens. It provides a cushion of peace that allows you to stay focused on God’s plan.

Bible Verses for Reflection

  • Psalm 24:1: "The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it."

  • Proverbs 3:9-10: "Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine."

  • Matthew 6:24: "No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money."

  • 1 Timothy 6:17-19: "Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment."

Pastoral Insight and Encouragement

Living out Biblical stewardship isn't about being perfect; it's about being faithful. God isn't looking at the size of your bank account; He’s looking at the posture of your heart. If you feel like you've made a mess of your finances, don't let shame keep you from moving forward. There is grace for your past and a plan for your future.

Financial freedom isn't just about having "enough" money; it's about having the "right" relationship with it. When you put God first, everything else begins to fall into place. You’ll find that you can live on 90% of your income with God’s blessing far better than you can live on 100% without it.

A Prayer for Financial Peace

Lord, we thank You that You are our Provider. We acknowledge today that everything we have belongs to You. Please forgive us for the times we’ve tried to be the owners instead of the managers. Give us the wisdom to create a plan, the discipline to stay out of debt, and the heart to be generous. We ask for Your peace to replace our financial anxiety. Help us to manage Your resources in a way that brings glory to Your name and freedom to our lives. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
