Have you ever felt like you're living life in the margins? Maybe you're working the night shift while the rest of the world sleeps. Perhaps you're a stay-at-home parent who feels invisible some days. Or you might be going through a season where it seems like everyone else's life is the main story, and yours is just a footnote.
Here's the beautiful truth we're exploring this Friend Friday: God doesn't just show up for the headline moments. He's right there with you in every margin, every quiet corner, every overlooked space of your life.
You are never forgotten. Never alone. Deeply loved by God: exactly where you are right now.
What Does "Living in the Margins" Really Mean?
The margins are those spaces that don't make the highlight reel. They're the 3 AM feeding sessions with a newborn. The lunch break spent alone in your car because you need a moment to breathe. The hospital waiting room. The unemployment line. The quiet apartment where the phone hasn't rung in days.
Pastor Dr. Layne McDonald often reminds us that God specializes in margin moments. These are the spaces where we feel most vulnerable: and often, where we experience God most profoundly.

Think about the stories in Scripture. So many of God's greatest encounters happened in the margins:
Moses met God at a burning bush while doing the ordinary work of shepherding in the wilderness (Exodus 3)
Elijah heard God's still, small voice while hiding in a cave, exhausted and afraid (1 Kings 19)
The shepherds received the announcement of Jesus' birth while working the night shift in the fields (Luke 2)
The woman at the well encountered Jesus during the heat of the day when she was avoiding others (John 4)
God doesn't wait for you to get your life together, find the perfect church pew, or have an Instagram-worthy testimony. He meets you right where you are.
Five Truths About God's Presence in Your Margins
1. God Sees What Others Miss
When you feel invisible, remember this: the God who counts the stars and calls them each by name (Psalm 147:4) absolutely sees you. He notices the late nights, the quiet sacrifices, the tears you've cried when no one was watching.
Hagar, alone in the desert and running from a difficult situation, gave God a name that still speaks to us today: El Roi: "the God who sees me" (Genesis 16:13).
Whatever margin you're living in right now, you are seen. Fully known. Completely loved.
2. Your Location Doesn't Limit God's Love
Whether you're in a prison cell like Paul, in a foreign land like Daniel, or stuck at home unable to leave like so many in our Boundless community: God's presence isn't bound by geography.
"Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there." : Psalm 139:7-8
This is why online church isn't "less than." For homebound believers, global seekers, night-shift workers, and anyone who can't physically be in a building on Sunday morning, God is just as present in your living room, hospital bed, or break room as He is in any cathedral.

3. Margin Seasons Often Produce the Deepest Growth
Joseph spent years in prison before becoming second-in-command of Egypt. David spent years hiding in caves before becoming king. Jesus spent 40 days in the wilderness before beginning His public ministry.
Your margin season isn't wasted time. It's preparation time. It's the quiet work God does in hidden places before the breakthrough everyone else sees.
4. You're Not Alone: Even When It Feels That Way
One of the enemy's favorite lies is this: "You're the only one going through this." But here's the truth: there's an entire community of believers who understand.
At Boundless Online Church, we have members in different time zones, various life circumstances, and diverse backgrounds. Night workers connect with others who understand their schedule. Homebound believers find friends who get it. Parents of special-needs children discover they're not walking this road alone.
Community changes everything.
5. Your Story Matters to Someone Else
The very margins you're living in right now? They're equipping you to help someone else who will walk that path later. Your testimony of God's faithfulness in the hard places becomes a lifeline for others.
As Paul wrote: "Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God." : 2 Corinthians 1:3-4
A Biblical Life-Changing Affirmation for Your Week
Speak this truth over yourself today:
"I am never forgotten, never alone, and deeply loved by God. The Creator of the universe sees me, knows my name, and is with me in every moment: even in the margins. My current season has purpose, and God is working all things together for my good. I choose to trust His presence even when I cannot feel it."
Write it down. Put it on your mirror. Set it as a phone reminder. Let this truth sink deep into your spirit.
Practical Ways to Experience God in the Margins
Here are some actionable ways to connect with God wherever you are:
Start a "God Sightings" journal : Write down small moments where you notice God's presence or provision each day
Join an online community : Connection with other believers reminds you that you're part of something bigger
Listen to worship music during mundane tasks : Transform your commute, chores, or work shift into worship time
Practice "breath prayers" : Short prayers you can whisper anytime: "Lord, I trust You" or "Jesus, You are here"
Share your story : Your margin experiences can encourage someone else who needs to know they're not alone
