Faith Questions: How Do I Pray When I Can't Find Words?

Have you ever sat down to pray and realized your mind was a complete blank?
Maybe it’s because you’re exhausted. Maybe you’re walking through a season of grief that has left you numb. Or perhaps life is just so noisy right now that you can’t hear your own thoughts, let alone form them into a coherent sentence for God.
If you’ve ever felt "stuck" in your prayer life, I want to tell you something right now:
It is okay.
In fact, it’s more than okay, it’s a place where many of the greatest heroes of faith have found themselves. At Boundless Online Church, we hear from people all over the world, shift workers, parents, people in hospital rooms, and those just searching for hope, who all ask the same thing: "How do I pray when I can’t find the words?"
Prayer isn't a performance. It’s a connection. And sometimes, the deepest connections happen when we stop talking and just start being.
The Holy Spirit Prays for You
One of the most beautiful truths in the Bible is found in Romans 8:26. It says, "In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans."
Think about that for a second.
As a ministry rooted in the Assemblies of God tradition, we believe in the power and presence of the Holy Spirit. One of our Fundamental Truths is that the Holy Spirit is our Helper.
When you are too tired to speak, the Holy Spirit isn't standing by waiting for you to get your act together. He is actually stepping in and "groaning" on your behalf. He translates the heavy ache in your chest or the confused tangle of your thoughts into the perfect language of heaven.
You don't have to provide the vocabulary. You just have to provide the presence.

Sitting in the Silence
We often think of prayer as a grocery list of requests. God, please fix this. God, please provide that.
While God loves to hear our needs, prayer is also about friendship. Think about a person you’ve known for years: a spouse, a best friend, or a sibling. You can sit on a porch for an hour without saying a single word and still feel completely understood and loved.
God wants that with you.
If you can’t find words, try just "sitting" with Him.
Find a quiet spot (or a noisy one, if that's all you have).
Take a deep breath.
Acknowledge His presence: "God, I’m here. I don’t have much to say, but I want to be with You."
This is a valid form of worship. It’s resting in the shadow of the Almighty. You can find more about this kind of rest in our Prayer and Worship resources.
The Power of Breath Prayers
When your brain is foggy, long prayers feel impossible. This is where "breath prayers" come in. These are ancient, short phrases that you can pray in the rhythm of your breathing.
They are perfect for when you’re driving to work, waiting in a doctor’s office, or trying to fall asleep.
How to do it:
Inhale a name or attribute of God.
Exhale a need or a promise.
Examples:
(Inhale) The Lord is my shepherd... (Exhale) I have everything I need.
(Inhale) Holy Spirit... (Exhale) Give me peace.
(Inhale) Jesus... (Exhale) I trust You.
These simple, repetitive prayers help anchor your mind when it wants to wander into anxiety. They remind us of The Gift of God’s Word and help us stay connected to the Truth even when we feel weak.

Borrowing Someone Else’s Words
Sometimes, the reason we can’t find words is that we’re trying to invent them from scratch. But we don't have to! The Bible is full of prayers written by people who were stressed, angry, happy, or desperate.
The Psalms are the original prayer book of the church. If you’re feeling lost, open to the Psalms and read one aloud.
If you’re overwhelmed: Psalm 61 ("Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.")
If you’re anxious: Psalm 23 ("The Lord is my shepherd...")
If you’re feeling guilty: Psalm 51 ("Create in me a pure heart, O God.")
Let the biblical writers speak for you. When you read their words, they become your words. This is a great way to grow in Faith and Discipleship during dry seasons.
Tears are a Language God Understands
I once heard someone say that "Tears are liquid prayers."
Psalm 56:8 tells us that God keeps track of all our sorrows and has collected all our tears in a bottle. He doesn't look at your crying as a lack of faith; He looks at it as a form of communication.
Your sighs, your tears, and even your frustrated silence are all "data" that God interprets with love. You don't need to apologize for being emotional or for being "done." He created your emotions, and He is big enough to handle them.

Engaging Your Body and Senses
Prayer doesn't always have to happen with your eyes closed and hands folded. Sometimes, moving your body helps unlock your spirit.
Take a walk: Look at the trees, the sky, or even just the sidewalk. Let the act of walking be your prayer.
Open your hands: Sit with your palms facing up on your lap. It’s a physical sign of being ready to receive whatever God has for you.
Light a candle: Let the flickering flame remind you that Jesus is the Light of the World, even when things feel dark.
For those of us in the digital age, technology can even help us ground our faith. We’ve looked at Unexpected Tech Tools before that can help keep us focused on the Word when our physical environment is distracting.
A Simple Prayer for Right Now
If you are reading this and you still feel like you can't find the words, let me pray for you. You can just agree in your heart as you read:
Lord, thank You that You are here. Thank You that You aren't looking for fancy words or long speeches. Right now, I lift up my friend who feels empty. I ask that Your Holy Spirit would fill the silence with Your peace. Give them rest. Remind them that they are loved, seen, and heard: even when they can’t say a word. Amen.
