Faith: What Happens When Love Refuses to Bow to the World?

Faith: What Happens When Love Refuses to Bow to the World?

When biblical love refuses to bow to the pressures of the world, it results in a faith that is both costly and unshakable. In a culture that often demands compromise in the name of "tolerance," true Christian love chooses to stand firm on the Truth of the Gospel, even when facing legal or financial consequences. This refusal to bow is not an act of hate, but an act of ultimate devotion to God and genuine care for the souls of others.

The world’s definition of love often looks like total compliance, staying silent to avoid offense or changing the message to fit modern narratives. However, as we see in recent headlines from the United Kingdom to the United States, followers of Christ are increasingly being asked to choose between the approval of the state and the authority of Scripture.

The Cost of Preaching the Gospel: The Case of Clive Johnston

In a recent and sobering development in Northern Ireland, a 78-year-old retired Baptist pastor, Clive Johnston, was convicted on May 7, 2026, for preaching the Gospel in a public space. His offense? Holding an open-air Sunday service within a "Safe Access Zone" outside Causeway Hospital in Coleraine.

Pastor Johnston wasn't shouting slogans or carrying protest signs. He was preaching from John 3:16, a verse that captures the very heart of God’s love for the world. Despite the sermon making no mention of abortion, the court ruled that his presence and his message constituted an "indirect protest" that could potentially cause distress.

This conviction marks a significant shift in religious liberty. When simply reading the Bible in public is classified as a criminal act because of where you are standing, we have reached a point where "love" for the Gospel is being legally restricted. Pastor Johnston’s refusal to bow his knee to a law that silences the Word of God is a modern-day example of the "Calm Power" we talk about at Boundless Online Church, a peaceful, resolute commitment to the Truth regardless of the fine or the fallout.

Institutional Pressure: US Ministry Training Under Fire

While the Clive Johnston case highlights the threat to individual speech, we are seeing a different kind of pressure building in the United States. Recent reports suggest increasing threats to the funding and accreditation of Christian institutions and ministry training programs.

Legislative maneuvers and shifts in federal policy, particularly regarding Title IX and public funding for religious charter schools, are creating a "bow or burn" scenario for Christian education. Schools that hold to traditional, biblical views on marriage, gender, and the sanctity of life are finding their access to student aid and grant programs increasingly challenged.

In Oklahoma and other states, the battle over whether a religious institution can participate in public education initiatives has reached a fever pitch. The underlying message from the world is clear: If you want to be part of the system, you must compromise your convictions.

At Boundless Online Church, we believe that Christian teaching must remain pure. We cannot trade the eternal Truth of God's Word for temporary financial security or social standing. Whether it's an individual preacher on a street corner or a seminary training the next generation of leaders, the call remains the same: Love the Truth more than you love your comfort.

What the Bible Says About Standing Firm

The Bible is not silent about these moments. Throughout history, God’s people have been commanded to bow to the idols of their age.

  • Daniel 3:17-18: "If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it... But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up."

  • Acts 5:29: "Peter and the other apostles replied: 'We must obey God rather than human beings!'"

  • Ephesians 6:13: "Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand."

These verses remind us that our primary allegiance is to the King of Kings. When we refuse to bow, we aren't being difficult; we are being faithful.

Love is Not Compliance

Many people in Memphis TN and around the world ask: "Isn't Christianity supposed to be about love and inclusion?"

The answer is yes: but biblical love is inseparable from Truth. If a doctor knows a patient has a life-threatening illness, the most "loving" thing they can do is tell the truth and offer the cure, even if the news is distressing. In the same way, the Gospel is the cure for the human soul. To remain silent about the reality of sin and the need for Jesus Christ because someone might find it "offensive" is actually the most unloving thing a Christian could do.

True love refuses to bow because it values the eternal destination of others over temporary social harmony. It is a love that is willing to be misunderstood, fined, or even imprisoned, so that the message of hope in Jesus can still be heard.

How to Stand Firm in a Changing World

If you are feeling the pressure to compromise in your workplace, your school, or your community, here are five practical ways to maintain your "Calm Power":

  1. Anchor in the Word: You cannot defend Truth if you do not know it. Dive deep into Christian teaching and let the Bible be your final authority.

  2. Find Your Community: Isolation breeds fear. Connect with an online church Memphis community or a local group where you can be encouraged by others who share your convictions.

  3. Respond with Grace: Standing firm doesn't mean being rude. Like Pastor Johnston, let your message be the Gospel, delivered with a spirit of peace and love.

  4. Pray for Boldness: Boldness is a gift from the Holy Spirit. Ask God for the strength to speak when it’s hard and to stay silent when it’s wise.

  5. Prioritize the Eternal: Remember that the laws and pressures of this world are temporary. God’s Kingdom is forever.
