Family Devotionals: 3 Simple Summer Rhythms to Keep Faith Alive

Summer usually starts with a sigh of relief, followed quickly by a slight panic. As parents, we look at the empty squares on the calendar and think, “This is going to be great!” But by week two, the unstructured time often turns into a battle of the screens, endless snacks, and the familiar chorus of "I’m bored."
It’s easy to feel the pressure to fill every hour with "enriching" activities, but when it comes to your family’s faith, summer doesn't have to be a struggle. Instead of viewing the lack of a school schedule as a problem, try seeing it as an opportunity. This is the season where the "hurry" of life slows down just enough for us to catch our breath and actually notice where God is moving in our homes.
Why Summer is Actually Perfect for Discipleship
Most of the year, we are rushing. We rush to the bus, rush to practice, and rush to finish homework. But summer is different. It’s the season of "long-form" life. The days are longer, the pace is slower, and the moments are more organic.
How do I keep my kids' faith strong during summer break? The secret isn't in adding a three-hour theology class to their day. It’s in building small, lightweight daily and weekly rhythms that weave Scripture and prayer into the normal flow of your summer life: the meals, the bedtimes, and the backyard play.
Here are three simple rhythms you can start this week to keep your family growing closer to Jesus.

1. The 5-Minute Morning Worship Start
What are quick faith activities for summer? One of the best ways to set the tone for the day is a "5-Minute Morning Start." Before the kids scatter to their various activities or screens, gather for just five minutes.
One Worship Song: Use a speaker to play a song that focuses on God’s goodness. (Tip: Our Boundless Online Church resources often feature songs and stories perfect for this!)
One Scripture: Read a single verse. You don't need a deep commentary: just read it and ask, "What does this tell us about God today?"
One Prayer: Pray a simple blessing over their day. "Lord, help us to see Your light today. Amen."
This small anchor helps everyone remember that no matter how many popsicles we eat or how many miles we travel, we belong to Him.

2. Bedtime Bible Stories
What's the best summer Bible reading plan for families? Don't overthink it. This summer, choose a children's Bible or an illustrated storybook and commit to reading one story per night.
If you have older children, you might choose one book of the Bible: like the Gospel of John: to read through together over the next few months. The goal isn't to finish a massive checklist; it’s to make the Bible a natural part of your evening "wind down." There is something incredibly powerful about your child’s last thoughts of the day being centered on the stories of Jesus.

3. One Family Service Moment Per Week
How do I do family devotions in the summer? Sometimes the best devotional is a "doing" devotional. Once a week, choose a small way to serve together. Faith is caught more than it’s taught, and when kids see their parents living out the Gospel, it sticks.
The Prayer Walk: Take a 15-minute walk around your neighborhood and pray for the families in each house you pass.
The Gratitude Dinner: Once a week, have a meal where the only "rule" is that everyone shares three things they saw God do that week.
The Neighbor Blessing: Bake cookies or drop off a cold drink for a neighbor, simply to show them the love of Christ.
Keep it Flexible and Full of Grace
The most important rule for summer discipleship is this: Grace wins. There will be days when the morning start doesn't happen because everyone slept in. There will be nights when you’re too tired to read a story. That’s okay.
As the Bible says in Deuteronomy 6:7, we are called to talk about God's Word when we sit at home, when we walk along the road, when we lie down, and when we get up. Notice that it doesn't say "only when you have a perfectly prepared lesson." It’s about the journey.
Practical Takeaway: Start Small Today
Pick one of these rhythms: just one. Maybe it’s the morning song or the bedtime story. Try it for three days this week. You’ll be surprised at how quickly a small habit turns into a meaningful family tradition.
Summer is short, but the seeds of faith you plant today can last a lifetime.
