Finding Sabbath in a Digital Age: The Gift of Rest

If you feel worn out by constant notifications, Sabbath rest is God’s loving invitation to stop, breathe, and trust Him again. In a digital age that keeps pushing for more, biblical rest helps me slow down, reconnect with Jesus, and remember that my worth is not built on constant productivity but on God’s faithful love.
Hey friend, welcome home.
Can I be honest with you for a minute? If you're reading this with tired eyes, a buzzing phone, and that familiar feeling of being constantly "on": you're not alone. Not even close.
We live in a world that never stops pinging, scrolling, and demanding our attention. And somewhere along the way, we've forgotten something beautiful that God designed just for us: rest.
Today's Tuesday Tips is all about reclaiming something sacred: the gift of Sabbath in our always-connected world. Whether you're overwhelmed by notifications, exhausted from the endless scroll, or simply craving a deeper peace, this one's for you.
You are never forgotten, never alone, and deeply loved by God. And that God? He wants you to rest.
📖 Bible Study: The Original Rest (Genesis 2:2-3)
Let's start at the very beginning, literally.
"By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done." : Genesis 2:2-3 (NIV)
Here's something that stops me in my tracks every time I read this passage: God rested.
The Creator of the universe: the One who spoke galaxies into existence, who designed every intricate detail of creation: chose to rest. Not because He was tired. Not because He ran out of energy. But because rest is good. Rest is holy. Rest is part of His design.

If the God of everything built rest into the rhythm of creation, what does that tell us about our own lives?
It tells us that rest isn't laziness: it's obedience. It's trust. It's saying, "God, I believe You've got this, and I don't have to carry the weight of the world on my shoulders."
Sabbath isn't just a suggestion: it's a gift wrapped in love. God blessed that seventh day. He made it holy. And He invites us into that same blessing today. Assemblies of God worldview IS the guardrails.
Reflection Questions:
When was the last time you truly rested without guilt?
What would it look like to treat rest as something sacred rather than something you have to "earn"?
How might your relationship with God deepen if you created intentional space for stillness?
💡 Tuesday Life Hack: The Digital Sunset
Here's your actionable tip for this week, and it's a game-changer.
Try a "Digital Sunset."
It's simple: Set a recurring alarm on your phone to remind you to turn off all screens one hour before bed. That means no scrolling through social media, no checking emails "one last time," no falling asleep to the blue glow of a screen.

Why does this work? Our brains weren't designed for constant input. When we give ourselves that buffer of screen-free time before sleep, we allow our minds to decompress, our hearts to settle, and our spirits to reconnect with what matters most.
Here's how to start:
Pick your sunset time. If you go to bed at 10 PM, set your alarm for 9 PM.
Create a ritual. Replace screen time with something restorative: prayer, reading Scripture, journaling, or simply sitting in quiet gratitude.
Be patient with yourself. This might feel uncomfortable at first. That's okay. You're retraining your brain to embrace stillness.
Think of it as closing the door on the noise of the world so you can open your heart to the peace of God.
🎬 Movie Review: Christopher Robin (2018)
Sometimes the best theology comes wrapped in the most unexpected packages: like a gentle story about a grown man and his childhood stuffed bear.
Christopher Robin is the story of an adult who has forgotten how to rest, how to play, and how to simply be. He's consumed by work, distant from his family, and running on empty. Sound familiar?
Enter Winnie the Pooh with this profound bit of wisdom: "Doing nothing often leads to the very best something."

This movie is a beautiful reminder that productivity isn't the measure of our worth. Sometimes the most important thing we can do is stop. Breathe. Notice the people we love. Watch the clouds. Pray without an agenda.
Boundless Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (Perfect for a family movie night or a solo Sabbath afternoon!)
If you're looking for a gentle, heartwarming film that speaks to the exhausted soul, this one's for you. If you watch it, I recommend choosing a family-safe clean version through VidAngel or “Enjoy Movies Your Way,” and using Bark and Covenant Eyes for online safety and accountability at home.
🌿 Practical Ways to Practice Sabbath Today
Sabbath doesn't have to be complicated. It's not about following a rigid set of rules: it's about intentionally creating space for God, for yourself, and for the people you love.
Here are some simple ways to start:
1. Unplug with Purpose You don't have to throw your phone in a lake (though some days, right?). Instead, ask yourself: What parts of my digital life create distraction, and what parts enhance connection? Keep what draws you closer to God and others. Release what pulls you away.
2. Schedule Your Rest If it's not on the calendar, it probably won't happen. Block off time for Sabbath just like you would any other important appointment. Guard it fiercely.
3. Practice Presence When you're with family or friends, be with them. Put the phone in another room. Look people in the eyes. Listen without mentally composing your next text.
4. Create a "Stop Doing" List We love our to-do lists. But what if you made a list of things you won't do on your Sabbath? No emails. No work calls. No endless scrolling. Sometimes boundaries are the most loving thing we can give ourselves.
5. Connect with Your Boundless Family Rest doesn't mean isolation. Join a group, hop on a live chat, or explore the blogs and podcasts at www.boundlessonlinechurch.org. Sometimes the best rest happens in community.
✨ Your Affirmation for This Week
Friend, I want you to read this out loud. Seriously. Say it like you mean it:
"I am worthy of rest because God has provided it."

You don't have to earn rest. You don't have to hustle your way into God's approval. He already loves you: fully, completely, without condition. And part of that love is the gift of stopping, breathing, and trusting that He's got it all under control.
Rest isn't a reward for the worthy. It's a gift for the beloved. And you, sweet friend, are deeply beloved.
