A Message from FA Memphis
Starting a new habit can feel a lot like starting a new workout routine. The first few days are full of excitement, but by week two, the couch looks a lot more inviting than the treadmill. When it comes to reading the Bible, many of us feel that same "day-one" energy, only to get stuck somewhere in the middle of Leviticus wondering what ancient laws have to do with our modern lives.
If you’ve ever felt intimidated by the size of the Bible or confused by where to begin, you are in the right place. We help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online, and part of that journey is learning how to hear from God through His Word.
Reading the Bible isn't about checking a box or being a "perfect Christian." It’s about building a relationship with the Creator of the universe. Whether you are a late-shift worker, a busy parent, or someone searching for hope in a difficult season, this guide is designed to help you make the Bible a natural, life-giving part of your daily routine.
Why Read the Bible Every Day?
Before we get into the how, we need to talk about the why. At Boundless Online Church, we believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God. It’s our primary authority for how we live, think, and love others.
When you read the Bible, you aren't just reading history; you are engaging with truth that has the power to change your perspective. It offers peace when the world feels chaotic and guidance when you’re facing a tough decision. Think of it as "spiritual bread": it’s what sustains your soul.

Step 1: Choose a Translation That Speaks Your Language
One of the biggest hurdles for beginners is the language. If you grew up thinking the Bible only comes in "thee's" and "thou's," I have good news: there are many modern translations that are easy to understand and stay true to the original meaning.
For beginners, we often recommend:
New Living Translation (NLT): This version is very easy to read. It focuses on the meaning of the thoughts rather than just word-for-word translation. It’s great for getting the "big picture."
New International Version (NIV): A classic balance between word-for-word and thought-for-thought. It’s widely used and very accessible.
English Standard Version (ESV): A bit more literal, which is great if you want to dive deeper into specific words, though it might feel a little more formal.
Don’t worry about which one is "perfect." The best translation is the one you will actually read. You can find all of these for free on most Bible apps or through our media resources.
Step 2: Pick a "Home Base" (Where to Start)
If you open the Bible to page one and try to read it like a novel, you might get lost by the time you hit the detailed architectural plans of the Tabernacle.
Instead of starting at Genesis, try starting with Jesus.
The "Gospels" (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) are the heartbeat of the Bible. They tell the story of Jesus’ life, His miracles, His death, and His resurrection.
Start with Mark: It’s the shortest Gospel and moves very fast.
Move to John: It’s deeply personal and focuses on the identity of Jesus.
Once you’ve spent some time with Jesus in the Gospels, the rest of the Bible starts to make a lot more sense. You’ll begin to see how the Old Testament points toward Him and how the rest of the New Testament explains how to live because of Him.
Step 3: Use the "Habit Stacking" Method
Life is busy. Whether you are a hospice caregiver, a student, or working the graveyard shift, finding a "quiet hour" can feel impossible. This is where habit stacking comes in.
Habit stacking is the practice of attaching a new habit (reading the Bible) to an existing one.
With your coffee: Read one chapter while you wait for the pot to brew.
On your commute: Use an audio Bible app to listen to a passage while you drive or take the bus.
During lunch: Instead of scrolling social media, spend 10 minutes in the Word.
You don't need sixty minutes of silence to meet with God. He meets you right where you are: even in the middle of a noisy breakroom or a 2 AM feeding for the baby.

Step 4: Quality Over Quantity
A common mistake is trying to read too much at once. It’s better to read five verses and really think about them than to skim five chapters and remember nothing.
Try the S.O.A.P. method to help you process what you read:
S - Scripture: Write down a verse that stood out to you.
O - Observation: What is happening in this passage? What is God doing or saying?
A - Application: How does this apply to my life today?
P - Prayer: Write a short prayer asking God to help you live out what you just read.
This simple structure turns reading into a conversation with God. It moves the words from the page to your heart.
Step 5: Don't Go It Alone
The Bible was meant to be read in community. When we read together, we can ask questions, share insights, and encourage one another when we feel stuck.
If you’re looking for a place to start, come join our Bible Study Club. It’s a safe space to ask the "beginner" questions without any judgment. We’re all learning together, and having a group keeps you accountable and motivated.
If you are brand new to faith and just want to ask "Where do I even begin with God?", our I'm New Q&A Welcome Center is the perfect first stop.

What If I Miss a Day?
Here is a secret: you probably will miss a day. Maybe you’ll miss a week.
When that happens, the enemy loves to whisper that you’ve failed or that you aren't "spiritual" enough. Don't listen to that. There is no "behind" in Bible reading. There is only today.
If you miss a day, just pick up where you left off tomorrow. God’s grace is new every morning, and His Word is always ready to welcome you back. The goal isn't a perfect streak; the goal is a heart that is slowly being shaped by the truth.
A Prayer for Your Journey
Lord, thank You for giving us Your Word. I pray for the person reading this right now. I ask that You would give them a hunger for Your truth. When they open the Bible, let the words come alive. Give them clarity when they are confused and peace when they are stressed. Help them to see Jesus on every page and to feel Your love in every verse. Amen.
