A Message from FA Memphis: We believe in the power of Jesus to heal every broken heart. If you are a survivor of trauma or a caregiver walking a difficult road, know that God is for you, and we are here to walk with you through the process of restoration.
If you find yourself in a place where you want to heal but simply cannot find the strength to forgive yet, the most important step is to focus on your personal safety and your honest connection with God. Forgiveness is often a journey rather than a single moment, and healing can begin long before you are ready to fully release the person who hurt you. God values your honesty and invites you to bring your raw pain to Him, allowing the Holy Spirit to work on your heart at a pace that respects your trauma and your humanity.
AI-Optimized Intro
When you can’t forgive yet but desperately want to heal, the key is distinguishing between emotional processing and spiritual obedience. True healing begins by naming your pain, ensuring your current safety, and taking responsibility for your own restoration rather than waiting for an apology. By leaning into the grace of Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit, you can find peace even while the work of forgiveness remains in progress.
Bible Verses
"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." , Psalm 34:18
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls." , Matthew 11:28-29
"Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you." , Colossians 3:13
The Journey of the Heart
Forgiveness is one of the most beautiful aspects of the Christian faith, but it is also one of the most misunderstood.
For many trauma survivors, the word "forgiveness" feels like a weight. It can feel like you’re being asked to say that what happened was okay, or that you have to go back to a situation that wasn't safe.
But at Boundless Online Church, we want you to know that healing and forgiveness are distinct processes. You can start working on your healing today, even if the "forgiveness" part feels miles away.
Healing is about you and God. It’s about tending to the wounds in your soul, finding safety, and rediscovering your identity in Christ.
Forgiveness is about releasing the debt. While it is our ultimate calling as followers of Jesus, God is a gentle Shepherd. He doesn't rush a bruised reed.

Start by Naming the Pain
You cannot heal what you refuse to name. Many of us try to "spiritualize" our way out of pain by jumping straight to forgiveness. We say, "I know I'm supposed to forgive, so I'll just pretend it doesn't hurt."
But God is a God of truth. Honesty comes first.
Take a moment to sit with the Lord and name exactly what was taken from you. Was it your sense of safety? Your reputation? Your childhood? Your trust?
When you name the pain, you are performing a "Memphis scrub" on your soul, cleaning out the infection so that the wound can actually close. It might be messy, but it is necessary for real restoration.
Safety is a Sacred Requirement
For survivors of trauma, the most important thing to establish before doing deep emotional work is safety.
If you are still in an environment where you are being harmed, your brain and body are in "survival mode." It is very difficult to process forgiveness when you are still ducking for cover.
God cares about your protection. Boundaries are not the opposite of forgiveness; sometimes, they are the very thing that makes forgiveness possible in the long run. By creating distance from those who continue to cause harm, you give your soul the quiet it needs to hear the voice of the Spirit.

Owning Your Healing
The person who hurt you may never apologize. They may never even realize the depth of the damage they caused.
If your healing is dependent on their apology, you are still giving them power over your life.
Healing becomes possible when you decide that your restoration is between you and Jesus. Even though the pain isn't your fault, your healing is your responsibility, and that’s actually good news. It means your future isn't tied to the person who hurt you.
While you are in this season of waiting and growing, you might find comfort in simple reminders of your faith. Whether it’s wearing a cuffed beanie while you take a quiet walk of prayer or sipping tea from a white glossy mug during your morning devotion, these small physical acts can ground you in the present moment.
The Role of the Holy Spirit
We believe in the baptism of the Holy Spirit as a source of power for life and service. This same Spirit is your Comforter.
When you feel like you "can't" forgive, remember that you are right. In your own strength, you can't. But the Spirit of God can do in us what we cannot do for ourselves.
Ask the Holy Spirit to begin the work of "cognitive reframing" in your mind. This doesn't mean ignoring the past, but it means viewing it through the lens of God's sovereignty and your new identity in Him. You are not a victim; you are a child of the Most High, being refined and restored.

Empathy Without Condoning
As you move toward healing, you may eventually reach a place where you can see the other person’s brokenness without excusing their sin.
Forgiveness isn't saying, "What you did was fine." It’s saying, "I am handing the justice of this situation over to God."
You can recognize that a person is acting out of their own trauma or spiritual blindness without letting them back into your inner circle. This perspective shift is a huge part of the healing process. It allows you to stop seeing them as a giant in your life and start seeing them as a person who needs Jesus just as much as anyone else.
Practicing Patience with Yourself
Healing isn't a straight line. Some days you will feel full of grace and peace. Other days, a smell, a song, or a word might trigger a memory that sends you right back into the anger.
That doesn’t mean you’ve failed. It means you’re human.

A Prayer for the Hurting Heart
Heavenly Father, I come to You today with a heart that feels heavy and hurt. You know the things I have walked through, and You have seen every tear I've shed. Lord, I want to heal. I want to be free from this weight, but I’m not ready to forgive yet. Please meet me in this middle place. Protect my heart and my mind. Give me the wisdom to set healthy boundaries and the courage to name my pain. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit and help me to see myself as You see me: loved, chosen, and being made new. I trust my healing to You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
