How can a modern Christian practice biblical financial stewardship?

Biblical financial stewardship for the modern Christian means recognizing God as the ultimate owner of all resources. By shifting from a mindset of ownership to one of management, believers prioritize tithing and generosity. This practice involves creating a budget, eliminating debt, and trusting God as the primary Provider, ensuring that financial decisions align with faith and meet the needs of the family and the community.
Understanding Stewardship in a Modern World
When we talk about money in the church, it can sometimes feel a bit heavy. But at Boundless Online Church, we like to look at it through a different lens, one of freedom and trust.
Financial stewardship isn’t just about balancing a checkbook or making sure the bills are paid. It is a spiritual discipline. It is the practice of managing what God has placed in our hands to honor Him and bless others. In today’s world, where we are bombarded by "buy now, pay later" ads and the constant pressure to accumulate more, stewardship is a radical act of faith.
The core of this practice is simple: God is the Provider. When we realize that everything we have, our talent, our time, and our treasure, belongs to Him, the pressure to "figure it all out" on our own begins to fade.
What the Bible Says About Our Resources
Before we dive into the "how-to," let’s look at the foundation. The Word of God is incredibly practical when it comes to money. Here are a few key verses that shape our understanding of stewardship:
Psalm 24:1: "The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it."
Malachi 3:10: "Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it."
Matthew 6:33: "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."
2 Corinthians 9:7: "Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."
These scriptures remind us that stewardship starts with the heart. It’s not about a percentage; it’s about a priority.
God as Our Provider
One of the most beautiful truths we hold onto in the Assemblies of God tradition is that God is our Source.
It is easy to look at our employer, our investments, or our side hustles as the source of our security. But those are just channels. God is the Source. When we view Him as our Provider, we stop living in a state of "scarcity" (the fear that there isn't enough) and start living in "abundance" (the trust that God has plenty).
Stewardship is how we say "thank you" for that provision. It is the way we show God that we trust Him with the small things so He can entrust us with the big things.

Practical Steps for the Modern Steward
Being a good steward in 2026 requires more than just good intentions. It requires a plan. If you are looking to align your finances with your faith, here are some practical steps you can take today.
1. Develop a Kingdom-Focused Budget
A budget is simply telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went. Start by listing your income and your expenses. Prioritize your tithe first, then your savings, then your needs (housing, food, transport), and finally your wants.
If you find that your expenses are higher than your income, don't panic. This is an opportunity to ask God for wisdom on where to trim. Often, we find that we are spending money on things that don't actually bring us peace or joy.
2. Live with Contentment
We live in a culture designed to make us feel discontent. There is always a newer phone, a faster car, or a bigger house. But 1 Timothy 6:6 tells us that "godliness with contentment is great gain."
Practicing contentment means being thankful for what you have right now while you work toward your future goals. It breaks the power of consumerism over your life.
3. Eliminate Debt
Debt can be a heavy burden that limits our ability to be generous. While not all debt is avoidable (like a modest mortgage), high-interest consumer debt can keep us in a cycle of stress.
As a steward, making a plan to pay off debt is an act of spiritual warfare. It sets you free to use your resources for the Kingdom rather than for interest payments.
4. Practice Digital Safety
In an online world, stewardship also includes protecting what God has given you. Be wise with your digital footprint. Use secure passwords, enable two-factor authentication on your banking apps, and be cautious of "get rich quick" schemes online.
We want to help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online, and that includes being smart about how we handle our digital tools.

The Joy of Generosity and Tithing
Tithing is the practice of giving the first 10% of our income back to the local church. It’s an ancient principle with a very modern application. When we tithe, we are declaring that God comes first.
But stewardship doesn't stop at the tithe. Generosity is the "overflow." It’s looking for ways to help a neighbor, support a missionary, or give to someone in need.
Generosity does something to our souls. It thins out our ego and makes us more like Jesus. Remember, you can't out-give God. He loves to see His children using their resources to reflect His heart to the world.
Why This Matters for the Boundless Community
As an online church, we are a global family. Your stewardship allows you to be a blessing not just in your local neighborhood, but across the world.
Whether you are participating in our Bible Study Club or you are a regular at our Men's Bible Study in Memphis, how you handle your money reflects your walk with Christ.
If you’re struggling with financial stress today, please know that you aren't alone. We serve a God who cares about your bank account because He cares about you. He knows your needs before you even ask.
A Prayer for Financial Wisdom
"Heavenly Father, we thank You that You are our Provider. Everything we have is a gift from Your hand. Give us wisdom to manage our finances in a way that honors You. Help us to be disciplined in our spending, faithful in our tithing, and radical in our generosity. We trust You to meet all our needs according to Your riches in glory. Break the spirit of lack and fear, and replace it with Your peace and abundance. In Jesus’ name, Amen."
