How can I find peace in a chaotic world? Discovering Rest in Christ

Finding peace in a chaotic world starts with recognizing that true rest is a Person, not a place or a feeling. Biblical peace, or "Shalom," is the wholeness found through a relationship with Jesus Christ. By practicing prayer, meditating on Scripture, and trusting in God’s sovereignty, you can experience a peace that surpasses understanding, guarding your heart even in life’s most turbulent storms.

Peace That Doesn't Make Sense

We live in a world that is constantly "on." Whether it’s the 24-hour news cycle, the pressure of work, or the personal struggles we face behind closed doors, chaos seems to be the default setting of modern life. You might find yourself asking, "Is it even possible to feel calm when everything around me is falling apart?"

The answer is a resounding yes, but it’s a different kind of peace than what the world offers. The world says peace is the absence of trouble. Jesus says peace is His presence in the middle of the trouble.

What the Bible Says About Peace

Before we dive into the "how-to," let’s look at the foundation. God’s Word is filled with promises for those whose hearts are heavy.

John 14:27 (NIV)

"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid."

Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

Isaiah 26:3 (NKJV)

"You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You."

Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV)

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls."

Understanding "Shalom"

In the Bible, the word for peace is often Shalom. In our modern English, we usually think of peace as "quiet" or "lack of war." But the Hebrew meaning of Shalom is much deeper. It means wholeness, completeness, health, safety, and prosperity. It’s the idea of a jagged life being made smooth or a broken vessel being made whole.

When Jesus offers you peace, He isn’t just offering a temporary "zen" moment. He is offering to put the broken pieces of your life back together. This is a core part of the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God, specifically regarding our salvation and the work of the Holy Spirit. We believe that through Christ, we are restored to a right relationship with God, and that restoration is the ultimate source of peace.

Why the World Can’t Give You Peace

The world tries to sell us peace in many forms: vacations, bank accounts, entertainment, or even just avoiding conflict. While these things aren't necessarily bad, they are fragile. A vacation ends. A bank account can shrink. Conflict eventually finds us.

If your peace is based on your circumstances, your peace will change as often as your circumstances do.

Jesus offers a peace that "transcends all understanding." This means it doesn't make sense to the natural mind. It’s the ability to sit in a hospital room, or face a financial crisis, or navigate a broken relationship, and still feel a deep, settled quiet in your soul. Why? Because that peace isn't coming from what's happening around you; it’s coming from Who is within you.

Practical Steps to Finding Rest in Christ

How do we actually move from feeling frazzled to feeling focused on Christ? It takes intentionality. Here are four practical ways to cultivate peace daily:

1. Surrender the "Need to Know"

Much of our lack of peace comes from trying to control things we were never meant to carry. We worry about tomorrow because we want to ensure tomorrow goes our way.

The first step to peace is surrender. It’s saying, "Lord, I don't know how this is going to work out, but I know You are good." When we recognize God’s sovereignty, His ultimate power and authority, we can let go of the steering wheel. As we help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online, we often see that the biggest breakthrough comes the moment someone finally stops trying to be their own god.

2. The Power of "Stayed" Thoughts

Isaiah 26:3 says God keeps us in perfect peace when our minds are "stayed" on Him. To "stay" your mind means to lean it against something or to brace it.

If you fill your mind with social media arguments and negative news, your mind will be chaotic. If you brace your mind against the character of God, His faithfulness, His mercy, His strength, you will find stability. Try starting your day with a Sunday Sermon or a chapter of the Bible before you ever check your phone.

3. Pray About Everything (Yes, Everything)

Paul’s instruction in Philippians is very specific: "in every situation... present your requests to God." There is nothing too small for God to care about and nothing too big for Him to handle.

When you feel that knot of anxiety tightening in your chest, treat it as a "prayer prompt." Instead of letting the worry loop in your head, turn it into a conversation with the Father. Prayer isn't a magic wand that changes every situation instantly, but it is a divine exchange. You give Him your worries; He gives you His peace.

4. Lean into Community

You weren't meant to carry the weight of the world alone. Chaos feels much heavier when you’re isolated. Finding a group of believers who can pray with you and encourage you is vital. Whether it’s joining a Bible Study Club or connecting with others on our Prayer Wall, community reminds you that God’s peace often flows through His people.

The Role of the Holy Spirit

In the Assemblies of God tradition, we emphasize the work of the Holy Spirit as our "Comforter" and "Helper." Jesus promised that He wouldn't leave us as orphans. He sent the Holy Spirit to dwell within us.

When life feels like a storm, the Holy Spirit is the one who whispers "Peace, be still" to our hearts. He reminds us of God’s Word when we’ve forgotten it. He intercedes for us when we don’t even have the words to pray. If you are struggling to find peace, ask for a fresh infilling of the Holy Spirit. He is the source of the "calm power" we talk about: the strength to remain steady when the world is shaking.

Dealing with the "What-Ifs"

Anxiety loves to play the "what-if" game.

  • "What if I lose my job?"

  • "What if my health fails?"

  • "What if the world gets worse?"

The antidote to the "what-ifs" is the "Even-If."

  • "Even if I lose my job, God is my provider."

  • "Even if my health fails, God is my healer and my eternal hope."

  • "Even if the world gets worse, God is still on His throne."

This is the Blessed Hope we hold onto. We know that this world is not our final home. We are looking forward to the return of Christ and the restoration of all things. That eternal perspective changes how we view today’s problems.

A Path Forward

If you’re reading this and feeling completely overwhelmed, take a breath. God isn't asking you to "fix" your life today. He’s simply inviting you to come to Him.

Peace is a journey, not a destination. Some days you will feel it strongly; other days you will have to fight to keep your eyes on Jesus. But the promise remains: He is the Prince of Peace, and He is with you right now.

A Prayer for Your Peace

Lord Jesus, I come to You today feeling the weight of the world. My mind is busy, and my heart is anxious. I ask right now for that peace which surpasses all understanding to flood my life. I surrender my worries, my "what-ifs," and my need for control into Your capable hands. Holy Spirit, be my Comforter. Remind me of the truth that You are for me and that You will never leave me. Thank You for being my rest. Amen.
