Finding real community in Memphis starts by moving from "rows" to "circles." While attending large gatherings is helpful, true connection happens in smaller Life Groups where you are known and loved. Whether in-person in Cordova or online through Boundless, intentional relationship is the key to belonging.
The Memphis Paradox: Surrounded but Alone
Memphis is a city known for its soul, its rhythm, and its deep roots. From the bustling streets of Midtown to the growing neighborhoods of Cordova and Bartlett, the 901 is full of life. Yet, for many living here, there is a persistent sense of isolation. It is the "Memphis Paradox": being surrounded by thousands of people every day while feeling like no one truly knows your name or your story.
This feeling of being a face in the crowd isn't just a local issue; it’s a human one. However, in a city as large and diverse as ours, the weight of loneliness can feel especially heavy. At First Assembly Memphis, the mission is to ensure that no one has to walk through life alone. We believe that God designed every person for connection, and finding that connection is the first step toward a flourishing life in Christ.
Why Rows Aren’t Enough: The Power of Circles
When you walk into a large church service on a Sunday morning, you are sitting in a row. Rows are excellent for receiving instruction, experiencing worship, and hearing the Word of God. They provide a space for corporate encounter with the Holy Spirit. But rows are not designed for conversation. You can sit in a row for ten years and never have someone ask how your week was or pray for your specific needs.
To find real community, you must move from the row to a circle.
A circle is where eye contact happens. It’s where you share a meal, ask the hard questions about faith, and celebrate the wins of life together. In a circle, you aren't just a spectator; you are a participant. This shift is the difference between being a member of an audience and being a member of a family.

Life Groups: The Heartbeat of the 901
In the New Testament, the early church met in the temple courts (rows) and from house to house (circles). At First Assembly Memphis, we facilitate this through Life Groups. These are small gatherings of people who meet regularly to grow in their relationship with God and each other.
Life Groups offer three essential pillars of community:
Biblical Discipleship: Learning how to apply the Bible to everyday life in Memphis.
Mutual Support: Having a group of people to call when life gets difficult.
Local Mission: Partnering together to serve our neighbors in Cordova, Bartlett, and beyond.
Whether you are interested in a specific stage of life, such as our Prime Time Cruzers for those in their prime years, or you are looking for something general, there is a circle waiting for you.
Defining the Terms of Connection
Definition: Koinonia (Fellowship) A Greek word used in the New Testament to describe a deep, shared bond among believers. It isn't just "hanging out"; it is a spiritual partnership rooted in the life of Christ, where resources, burdens, and joys are shared.
Definition: Discipleship The intentional process of becoming more like Jesus through the study of Scripture, prayer, and the accountability of a faith community.
Finding Community When You Can’t Be Local
We recognize that not everyone can make it to our physical campus in the 901. Perhaps your work schedule is demanding, you have health limitations, or you live far outside the Memphis area. This is why we created the Boundless online option.
Boundless isn't just a stream to watch; it is a digital community designed to foster the same "circle" environment in a virtual space. Through Boundless, you can engage in real-time prayer, join digital Life Groups, and find a sense of belonging regardless of your zip code.

Your Daily Growth Quest: 5 Days to Connection
To help you transition from isolation to community, follow this simple daily rundown:
Day 1: Reflection. Identify one area of your life where you feel unsupported. Ask God to provide a "circle" for that need.
Day 2: Research. Visit the Life Groups section of our site and find two groups that interest you.
Day 3: Reach Out. Send a text or email to a group leader or a friend you met at church. Simply say, "I'm looking to get more connected."
Day 4: Prayer. Pray specifically for the 901 area. Ask God to use First Assembly Memphis to reach those who are lonely in our city.
Day 5: Action. Attend a service, a group, or an event. Introduce yourself to one person you don't know.
A Place for You in the 901
Memphis is a city of "front porch" hospitality, and at First Assembly Memphis, we want our church to feel like the best front porch in the city. You were not created to carry your burdens alone. You were created to be part of a body, a family, and a community that reflects the love of Jesus Christ.
Whether you are in the heart of Memphis or joining us from across the globe through Boundless, there is a place for you here. Let’s move from the rows into the circles together.
