How can I hear the Holy Spirit when life is loud?

Tier 2 – New or Curious Believers

The direct answer: You hear the Holy Spirit by intentionally creating quiet space, removing distractions, and tuning your heart to listen. God speaks in a gentle whisper, not a shout, so you'll need to turn down life's volume and make room for His still, small voice to break through.

Why This Matters (Especially in Memphis)

Let's be honest: Memphis is loud. Between Beale Street buzz, I-40 traffic, nonstop notifications, work stress, family demands, and the constant hum of daily life, finding a quiet moment feels nearly impossible. But here's the thing, God isn't competing for your attention with a megaphone. He's whispering. And if we want to hear Him, we've got to learn how to listen.

At First Assembly Memphis and Boundless Online Church, we believe the Holy Spirit is actively speaking to every believer, guiding, comforting, convicting, and leading us into truth. But we also know that in a city (and world) that never stops talking, learning to hear His voice is one of the most essential skills you can develop.

This post is for anyone who's ever asked: "Is God speaking to me, or am I just hearing my own thoughts? How do I know it's Him?"

Let's dig in.

The Biblical Foundation: God Speaks in a Whisper

One of the clearest pictures of how God speaks is found in 1 Kings 19:11-12, when the prophet Elijah was hiding in a cave, exhausted and discouraged. God told him to stand on the mountain, and here's what happened:

"Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper."

Did you catch that? God wasn't in the dramatic stuff, the wind, earthquake, or fire. He was in the gentle whisper.

That's how the Holy Spirit often works. He's not shouting over your Spotify playlist or interrupting your Instagram scroll. He's waiting for you to get quiet enough to hear Him.

The Problem: Modern Noise Pollution

Here's the reality: our lives are drowning in noise. External noise (phones, TVs, social media, constant busyness) and internal noise (anxiety, racing thoughts, mental clutter) create a wall between us and God's voice.

External noise keeps us distracted. We reach for our phones the second we're bored. We fill every quiet moment with a podcast, playlist, or notification check. Silence feels uncomfortable, so we avoid it.

Internal noise is even trickier. Sometimes the loudest voice in your head is your own, replaying yesterday's argument, worrying about tomorrow's bills, or spiraling into fear. That inner monologue can drown out the Holy Spirit just as effectively as any external distraction.

If you've ever prayed and felt like you got radio silence, the problem might not be that God isn't speaking. It might be that you haven't created the space to hear Him.

Practical Steps to Hear the Holy Spirit (Memphis Edition)

So how do you actually do this? Here are some AOG-aligned, Memphis-tested strategies:

1. Create Intentional Quiet Time

You've got to schedule it. I know, life is packed. But if you can find 15 minutes to scroll TikTok, you can find 15 minutes to sit with God. Try this:

  • Morning quiet: Before you check your phone, sit with a cup of coffee and your Bible. Ask God a question, then just sit. Wait. Listen. Don't fill the silence with your own words, let Him speak.

  • Drive time: Turn off the radio during your commute (yes, even on I-240). Use that time to pray out loud and listen.

  • Nature breaks: Memphis has some beautiful spots, Shelby Farms, Overton Park, the Greenline. Go for a walk without earbuds and just be present with God.

2. Reduce Digital Noise

This one's huge. Your phone is a noise machine. Try:

  • Turning off non-essential notifications

  • Setting "Do Not Disturb" during prayer time

  • Taking a weekly digital fast (even just a few hours)

One person shared that after cutting back on social media, they experienced "a saner, happier, and less stressful existence" with "more opportunities to hear from God." That's real.

3. Ground Yourself in Scripture

The Holy Spirit will never contradict God's Word. John 16:13 says, "But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth." If you're not regularly reading Scripture, you won't recognize His voice when He speaks.

Think of it like this: if you want to spot a counterfeit dollar bill, you study the real thing. Same with God's voice, immerse yourself in His Word so you know what He sounds like.

4. Practice "Listening Prayer"

Instead of just talking at God, pause and listen for God. Here's a simple framework:

  • Ask a question: "God, what do You want to say to me today?"

  • Sit in silence: Wait. Don't rush. Even if it feels awkward.

  • Write it down: When a thought, Scripture, or impression comes, jot it down. Test it against the Bible later.

The Holy Spirit often speaks through gentle nudges, peace, or a sudden clarity. Acts 13:2 shows us this: "While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, 'Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.'" They were listening, and God spoke.

5. Surrender Your Will

Sometimes we can't hear God because we're not willing to obey what He might say. Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us: "Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."

If you're holding tightly to your own plans, you'll miss His better ones. Daily surrender is key.

Common Misconceptions (Let's Clear These Up)

"God only speaks through dramatic experiences." Nope. While He can speak through visions, dreams, or big moments, most of the time it's subtle, a quiet conviction, a verse that jumps off the page, a sense of peace or warning.

"If I don't hear an audible voice, it's not God." Not true. The Holy Spirit speaks in many ways: through Scripture, wise counsel, circumstances, and that inner witness, a deep knowing in your spirit.

"I'm not spiritual enough to hear God." Wrong. If you're a believer, the Holy Spirit lives in you (1 Corinthians 3:16). You have direct access. Learning to hear Him is a skill you develop, not a gift reserved for "super Christians."
