How Do I Help My Child Say “Yes” to Jesus?

You help your child say “Yes” to Jesus by keeping it simple and warm: you show them who Jesus is, you talk about His love in everyday moments, and you give them gentle opportunities to trust Him—without pressure, fear, or perfection.

We’re talking about Truth #5: The Salvation of Man. Now, I know that sounds like a big, heavy theological phrase, but at its heart, it’s the most beautiful, warm, and playful invitation ever extended. It’s God looking at us and saying, "I love you, and I want you to be with Me forever." It’s not a list of rules or a test to pass; it’s an open door to a home where you always belong.

So, grab a cup of coffee (or a lukewarm one, if you’re in the middle of the "parenting shuffle"), take a deep breath, and let's look at how we can lead our children toward the greatest "Yes" they will ever say.

The Heart of the Word

To get us started, let’s look at the foundational promise that makes this all possible. If you have your Bible nearby, or even if you just want to read it right here on the screen, let these words sink in:

"If you declare with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." , Romans 10:9 (NIV)

Isn’t that refreshing? It doesn't say "if you are perfect" or "if you never make a mistake again." It’s about the heart and the declaration. It’s a beautiful starting point for us as parents and a simple truth to share with our kids.

A Reflection for the Parent’s Heart

Sometimes, as parents, we carry a lot of weight when it comes to our children's spiritual lives. We worry if we’re doing enough, saying enough, or "doing it right." If you've ever felt overwhelmed by the responsibility of leading your child to Jesus, I want you to take a moment and just set that burden down. You don't have to be a master theologian to share the love of Christ with your kids. You just have to be a witness to His goodness in your own life.

Salvation is, quite simply, the greatest invitation ever given. Think about the last time your child got an invitation to a birthday party. The excitement, the "Who is going to be there?", the joy of being included. God’s invitation is like that, but infinitely better. It is an invitation to come home, to be forgiven, and to walk through life with a Friend who never leaves.

When we talk to our children about Jesus, we aren't trying to force a decision or use "scary" words to make them obey. Instead, we are showing them the beauty of who Jesus is. We are telling them that because of Jesus, nothing can ever separate them from God's love. We are simplifying the "big" theology into a language they understand: You are loved, you are forgiven, and you belong to Him.

At Boundless Online Church, we believe that salvation is a gift. It’s not something we earn by being "good kids" or "perfect parents." It’s a response to a love that was already there. When we simplify this for our children, we remove the pressure and replace it with wonder.

The Story: The Golden Envelope

This is a story designed to be read aloud to your children. Find a cozy spot, maybe grab a blanket, and enjoy this moment together.

In a small house at the edge of a very green woods, lived a boy named Leo. Leo loved to collect things, shiny stones, interesting leaves, and even the occasional smooth piece of sea glass he found at the creek. But one morning, something appeared in his mailbox that he had never seen before.

It was a bright, golden envelope. It didn't have a stamp, but it had his name written in the most beautiful, shimmering ink: To Leo, My Brave Friend.

Leo’s heart did a little hop. He ran inside and showed his mom. "Look! I got an invitation!"

Together, they opened the golden envelope. Inside was a card that smelled like sunshine and cedar trees. It said:

"You are invited to the Great Garden. There is a place at the table just for you. You don't need to bring a gift. You don't need to wear fancy clothes. You just have to come as you are. I have been waiting for you." , The King.

Leo looked at his grass-stained knees and his messy hair. "But Mom, I'm not ready. I haven't cleaned my room, and I accidentally broke my sister's toy yesterday. Does the King know that?"

His mom knelt down and smiled. "Leo, the King knows everything about you. He knows about the broken toy and the messy room. But the invitation isn't about how good you've been. It’s about how much He loves you. He already paid for your way into the garden. All you have to do is say 'Yes' and follow the path."

Leo realized that he didn't have to be perfect to be invited. He just had to trust the King. He took a deep breath, held his mom's hand, and together they stepped toward the path, ready to see the wonderful things the King had in store.

The End.

Raising Christian Children: Tips & Tricks

Leading your child toward salvation isn't usually one single conversation; it’s a thousand tiny ones. Here are a few ways to keep the "Greatest Invitation" present in your home:

  • Model Repentance: When you lose your temper or make a mistake, apologize to your kids. Tell them, "I'm sorry, I needed Jesus to help my heart just then." It shows them that we all need His grace every day.

  • Keep it Natural: Talk about Jesus while you're driving to soccer practice or making dinner. Use phrases like, "Isn't it cool how God made that sunset?" or "I'm so glad Jesus helps us be brave."

  • Focus on Relationship: Instead of focusing on "sin" as a list of bad things, talk about it as things that hurt our relationship with God and others. Then, emphasize how Jesus mends that relationship.

  • Journaling Together: Use a spiral notebook to write down things you're thankful for or prayers you've seen God answer. It builds a history of God's faithfulness in their young minds.

Hands-On Faith: The "Yes" Invitation Craft

Supplies: Paper, markers, stickers, and an old envelope.

The Activity: Have your child create their own "Golden Envelope." They can color an envelope yellow or gold and decorate it. On a piece of paper inside, help them write "I Say Yes to Jesus!" or draw a picture of themselves walking with Him.

Spiritual Connection: "Just like Leo in our story, Jesus has given us the most special invitation ever. When we say 'Yes' to Him, He comes to live in our hearts and helps us every single day. This envelope is a reminder that you are always invited to talk to Him."

Parent Discussion Guide

Heart of the Story: Salvation is a gift of grace based on God's love, not our performance. It is an invitation to a relationship with Jesus.

Theological Roots: Truth #5 (Salvation of Man) emphasizes that Jesus is the only way to the Father and that faith and repentance are our response to His grace.

Questions for Connection:

Ages 3–6:

  • How did Leo feel when he got the golden envelope?

  • Did Leo have to be perfect to go to the garden?

  • Did you know Jesus loves you even more than the King in the story?

Ages 7–9:

  • Why was Leo worried about his messy room and broken toy? Do we ever feel that way with God?

  • What does it mean to "follow the path" to the King?

  • How can we show other people the "Golden Invitation" of Jesus?

Ages 10–12:

  • Romans 10:9 mentions believing in your heart. What does "believing with your heart" feel like compared to just knowing a fact with your head?

  • Why is it important that Jesus’ invitation is for everyone, no matter what they’ve done?

  • How does knowing you are "saved by grace" change the way you treat yourself when you make a mistake?

Daily Action Step

Today, find one specific moment to tell your child: "I am so glad God put you in our family, and I’m so glad He loves you even more than I do." Keep it simple, keep it light, and let the truth of God's love be the atmosphere of your home today.

A Guided Prayer

Dear Jesus, thank You for the Greatest Invitation. Thank You for loving us before we even knew Your name. Help us to lead our children with grace and joy. May our home be a place where Your love is easy to see and Your invitation is always open. We say 'Yes' to You today. Amen.
