Tier 2 – New or Returning Believers
You know you're truly saved when you've placed your faith in Jesus Christ, received the Holy Spirit, and see the evidence of a transformed life, including genuine repentance, love for God and others, and a growing desire to follow Him.
If you've ever laid in bed at night wondering whether your faith is real, you're not alone. I've talked to countless people here in Memphis who wrestle with this question. Maybe you said a prayer years ago but haven't felt much different. Maybe you struggle with the same sins over and over and wonder if that disqualifies you. Maybe doubt creeps in during your quiet moments.
Here's the good news: God wants you to have assurance. The apostle John wrote his first letter specifically so "you may know that you have eternal life" (1 John 5:13). This isn't meant to be a mystery that keeps you up at night. So let's walk through what the Bible says about genuine salvation and how you can know where you stand.
The Foundation: Faith, Not Feelings
First things first, salvation isn't based on how you feel. Our emotions go up and down like the temperature here in the 901 (seriously, 70 degrees one day, 30 the next). But God's truth is steady.
The Bible is crystal clear: "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast" (Ephesians 2:8-9). Salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ. When you genuinely believe that Jesus died for your sins and rose again, confess Him as Lord, and receive Him into your life, you are saved.
That's the foundation. Everything else flows from that.

The Evidence: A Changed Life
Now, here's where it gets practical. While salvation isn't earned by works, genuine faith always produces evidence. Think of it like a tree, you don't judge whether it's alive by how it feels, but by whether it bears fruit.
You'll See a Pattern of Repentance
Real believers still sin. Let me say that louder for the people in the back: real believers still sin. The difference is how you respond. When you mess up, do you feel conviction from the Holy Spirit? Do you confess it and turn away from it? Or do you just shrug and keep living however you want?
The Bible says, "No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God's seed remains in them" (1 John 3:9). This doesn't mean you'll be perfect, it means sin won't be your lifestyle anymore. You won't be comfortable staying in it.
You'll Love Other Believers
This one's huge. John also wrote, "We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love each other" (1 John 3:14). If you're genuinely saved, you'll find yourself drawn to other Christians. You'll want to be in community, worship together, and encourage one another.
Maybe that's at a Sunday service here in the 901, or in one of our Life Groups, or just grabbing coffee with another believer. The point is, you'll have a desire for fellowship that wasn't there before.
You'll Obey God's Word
Jesus said, "If you love me, keep my commands" (John 14:15). Obedience isn't what saves you, but it's evidence that you're saved. You'll find yourself wanting to read the Bible, pray, and actually live out what Scripture teaches. It won't always be easy, but the desire will be there.

The Witness: The Holy Spirit Inside You
One of the clearest signs of salvation is the presence of the Holy Spirit in your life. Romans 8:16 says, "The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children."
The Holy Spirit does several things:
Convicts you of sin – You'll feel uncomfortable when you're living outside of God's will
Produces spiritual fruit – Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23)
Gives you power – To resist temptation, share your faith, and live differently
Assures you – Deep down, you'll know you belong to God
If the Holy Spirit is actively working in your life, that's a powerful indicator that you're truly saved.
When Doubt Creeps In
Let's be honest, even genuine believers sometimes doubt. Maybe you're facing a dark season. Maybe you've fallen into sin. Maybe you just feel spiritually dry.
Here's what to do:
Go back to the basics. Have you genuinely confessed Jesus as Lord and believed in your heart that God raised Him from the dead? (Romans 10:9). If yes, you're saved. Don't let feelings override truth.
Examine your life. Are you seeing any fruit of the Spirit? Any growth? Any conviction when you sin? Even small signs matter.
Talk to someone. Don't wrestle alone. Reach out to a pastor, a mature believer, or a trusted friend. Sometimes we need outside perspective to see what God is doing in us.
Pray and seek God. Ask Him to reveal the truth to you. He promises that if we seek Him with all our heart, we'll find Him (Jeremiah 29:13).

What About Backsliding?
This is a concern for a lot of people. "I used to walk with God, but I've drifted. Am I still saved?"
The Bible teaches that salvation is secure as long as we remain in faith. You can't lose your salvation accidentally, but you can walk away from it through persistent unbelief and rebellion. Hebrews 6:4-6 and 10:26-27 warn about this.
If you've drifted but you're reading this right now, that's actually a good sign. The Holy Spirit is drawing you back. God is pursuing you. Come home. Repent, reconnect with Him, and get plugged back into a church family.
A Practical Test
Let me give you a simple diagnostic. Ask yourself these questions honestly:
Do I believe Jesus is the Son of God who died for my sins and rose again?
Have I confessed my sins and asked Jesus to be Lord of my life?
Do I feel convicted when I sin?
Am I growing in my faith, even if slowly?
Do I love other Christians and want to be around them?
Do I have a desire to obey God's Word?
Can I see any fruit of the Spirit in my life?
If you answered yes to most or all of these, you have good reason to believe you're saved. If you're hesitating on several, it might be time for a heart check.
The Gospel is Good News
Here's the bottom line: God wants you saved more than you want to be saved. He's not trying to trick you or keep you guessing. He sent Jesus because He loves you and wants a relationship with you.
If you've never truly given your life to Christ, today can be that day. It's as simple as praying, "Jesus, I believe You died for my sins and rose again. I'm sorry for my sins. Please forgive me, come into my life, and make me new. I surrender to You as Lord."
If you prayed that prayer and meant it, you're saved. Welcome to the family.
If you're already a believer but you've been doubting, let this be your encouragement. Stand on God's Word, not your emotions. Keep walking with Him. Keep growing. And know that nothing can snatch you out of His hand (John 10:28-29).
