How Do I Start Praying? (A Guide for Beginners)

Starting a prayer life is as simple as starting a conversation with a trusted friend. You don’t need religious jargon, a specific posture, or a theology degree to talk to God. Prayer is simply the honest opening of your heart to your Creator, who is already listening. By speaking your thoughts and making space to listen, you begin a life-changing journey of faith.

What the Bible Says About Prayer

The Word of God gives us clear guidance on how to approach our Heavenly Father. Here are three foundational verses to help you get started:

Matthew 6:6 (NIV):"But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."

Philippians 4:6–7 (NIV):"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

1 Thessalonians 5:17 (NIV):"Pray without ceasing."

Understanding Prayer: It’s Easier Than You Think

If you’ve ever felt like you didn’t know how to start praying, you aren’t alone. Many people worry they aren’t "holy enough" or that they’ll say the wrong thing. But at Boundless Online Church, we believe that prayer is the primary way we connect with the one true God.

1. Prayer is a Conversation

Imagine you’re sitting down with a mentor or a close family member. You wouldn’t use archaic language or try to sound like someone else. You’d just be yourself. God desires that same level of authenticity. In the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God, we emphasize that God is personal. He isn't a distant force; He is a loving Father who created you for a relationship.

2. Use a Simple Framework (The A.C.T.S. Method)

If you find your mind wandering or you’re stuck on what to say, try using the A.C.T.S. acronym. It’s a classic tool that helps cover the different "bases" of a healthy prayer life:

  • Adoration: Start by telling God how great He is. This isn’t because He has an ego, but because it reminds you of how big He is compared to your problems.

  • Confession: We all make mistakes. Use this time to be honest about where you’ve fallen short. Asking for forgiveness clears the air and restores your sense of peace.

  • Thanksgiving: What are you grateful for? Even on a bad day, there’s usually something, a roof over your head, a cup of coffee, or the breath in your lungs.

  • Supplication: This is a fancy word for "asking." Tell God what you need. Whether it’s healing, guidance on a job, or help with a relationship, He wants to hear it.

3. The P.R.A.Y. Method

If A.C.T.S. doesn't resonate with you, try P.R.A.Y.:

  • Praise: Celebrate God’s character.

  • Repent: Turn away from things that hurt your relationship with Him.

  • Ask: Share your needs and the needs of others.

  • Yield: This is the most important part, surrendering your will to His. It’s saying, "God, I want what You want for my life."

Practical Tips for Your First Week

You don’t have to pray for an hour to be "successful." In fact, starting small is the best way to build a habit that lasts.

Find Your "Secret Place"

Jesus talked about going into a room and closing the door. For you, that might be your car during a lunch break, a corner of your bedroom before the kids wake up, or a quiet walk in a local park. The goal is to minimize distractions so you can focus.

Pray Through the Day

While having a dedicated time is great, you can also talk to God throughout the day. This is what it means to "pray without ceasing."

  • "Lord, give me patience for this meeting."

  • "God, thank you for this beautiful sunset."

  • "Help that person I just saw who looks like they’re struggling."

Use the Bible as a Script

Sometimes our own words fail us. That’s okay! The Book of Psalms is essentially a collection of prayers. If you feel overwhelmed, read Psalm 23 or Psalm 139 aloud. Let those words become your words. Using Scripture in prayer ensures you are praying in alignment with God’s heart.

The Role of the Holy Spirit

In our faith tradition, we believe the Holy Spirit is our "Helper." Sometimes, when we are in deep pain or total confusion, we don’t have words at all. The Bible tells us that the Holy Spirit actually prays on our behalf with "groanings that cannot be uttered." You don’t always need to speak; sometimes, just sitting in God’s presence and saying, "Holy Spirit, help me," is the most powerful prayer you can offer.

Overcoming Common Hurdles

"I feel like I'm talking to the ceiling." We’ve all been there. Faith isn’t always a feeling. Just because you don’t feel an "emotional high" doesn't mean God isn't listening. Trust the promise that He will never leave you or forsake you.

"I'm too busy." If you have time to check your phone for five minutes, you have time to pray. Try "stacking" your habits, pray while you brush your teeth or while you’re waiting for the microwave.

"I've done too many bad things." God already knows everything you’ve done, and He still loves you. Through Jesus, the door is always open. There is no "waiting period" to talk to God after you’ve messed up. You can go to Him immediately.

Encouragement for the Journey

Starting to pray is like planting a seed. At first, it doesn't look like much is happening. But as you continue to show up, be honest, and listen, you’ll notice a shift. You’ll start to feel more peace. You’ll see "coincidences" that look a lot like answered prayers. Most importantly, you’ll realize that you are never truly alone.

Whether you are a late-shift worker looking for peace in the quiet hours, a caregiver needing strength, or someone just searching for the truth, God is ready to meet you right where you are. You don’t have to get your life "together" before you start talking to Him. He is the one who helps you put the pieces back together as you walk with Him.

A Short Prayer to Get You Started

Lord, I don't really know how to do this, but I want to know You. Thank You for loving me and for listening to me right now. Please help me to feel Your presence and guide my steps today. Forgive me for my mistakes and give me the strength to follow You. Amen.
