How Do You Build a God-Centered Marriage in Memphis? AG 101 for Shelby County Couples

Building a God-centered marriage in Memphis involves prioritizing intentional action, keeping Jesus at the center, and engaging with a local church community like FA Memphis. By participating in Life Groups and following biblical principles of love and service, couples in Shelby County can cultivate resilient, Spirit-led relationships.

Living in the 901 brings a unique blend of vibrant culture and distinct challenges. From the busy streets of Cordova to the quiet neighborhoods of Bartlett, couples in Shelby County face a landscape where marriage rates are shifting and financial stressors are real. In a world that often views marriage as a temporary contract based on fleeting feelings, the Assemblies of God (AG) tradition offers a different blueprint: a covenant rooted in the Holy Spirit and sustained by daily, intentional action.

Whether you are newlyweds in Midtown or have been married for forty years in Arlington, the call remains the same: to build a home where Christ is the cornerstone. This isn’t just about "good vibes" or attending a service on Sunday; it’s about a lifestyle of discipleship that transforms how you speak, how you spend, and how you love.

The Foundation: Marriage as a Covenant, Not a Contract

In the Assemblies of God 101 framework, marriage is recognized as a divine institution ordained by God. It is a covenant, a sacred, lifelong commitment, rather than a contract that can be voided when conditions change. For couples in Memphis, this distinction is the difference between a house built on sand and one built on the Rock.

The stressors of life in Shelby County, economic shifts, career pressures, and the frantic pace of modern parenting, can easily erode a relationship if the foundation is weak. When we center our marriage on Jesus, we move from a "what can I get" mentality to a "how can I serve" mission. This shift is the first step in building a marriage that doesn't just survive but thrives.

Definition: Sanctification in Marriage

Sanctification is the ongoing process of being set apart for God’s purposes and becoming more like Jesus through the work of the Holy Spirit. In marriage, this means your spouse is often the primary tool God uses to help you grow in patience, kindness, and selflessness.

Why Action Trumps Feelings in the 901

One of the most common misconceptions about marriage is that it is fueled by "the spark." While feelings are a gift from God, they are notoriously unstable. If you wait until you feel like being kind or feel like serving your spouse, you may find your marriage stalling during difficult seasons.

As the Pastor for Boundless Online outreach, part of FA Memphis Church, often emphasizes, successful marriages are built on intentional action. Drawing from biblical insights in Philippians, we see that faith is something to be put into motion. In the same way, love is a verb.

Marital Pillar

The Action Required

Biblical Reference

Patience

Choosing to listen before responding during a conflict.

James 1:19

Forgiveness

Releasing the debt of an offense immediately.

Colossians 3:13

Service

Actively looking for ways to lighten your spouse's load.

Galatians 5:13

Prayer

Interceding for your spouse's needs daily.

1 Thessalonians 5:17

By taking personal, positive, and persistent action, you actually change the atmosphere of your home. Action gives insight into the relationship that "thinking about it" never can. When you do the right thing, even when you don't feel like it, the Holy Spirit often aligns your heart with your actions, bringing back the very feelings you thought were lost.

Finding Your Tribe: Life Groups in Shelby County

You were never meant to do marriage alone. In a large city like Memphis, it is easy to become isolated, especially when life gets hard. Isolation is the enemy of a healthy marriage. This is why active participation in community is a non-negotiable part of the AG lifestyle.

At First Assembly Memphis, we prioritize Life Groups. These are small gatherings where couples from all over the 901 meet to study the Word, pray for one another, and share the real-life struggles of marriage and parenting.

Whether it's meeting at 9:30 am on a Sunday morning or connecting throughout the week, Life Groups provide:

  1. Accountability: Having other couples who can speak truth into your life.

  2. Mentorship: Learning from those who have walked the path before you.

  3. Support: Having a "911" circle of friends when a crisis hits.

Being part of a community reminds you that your struggles aren't unique. When you see another couple navigate a financial setback or a parenting hurdle with faith, it gives you the courage to do the same.

The Wednesday Night Rhythm: Strengthening the Family Unit

Building a God-centered marriage also means building a God-centered family. One of the most practical ways we facilitate this in Memphis is through our Wednesday Night Ministry Services.

The rhythm of a Wednesday evening at FA Memphis starts with a Family Dinner from 5:00 - 6:15 pm. This is a time to put down the phones, step away from the work stress, and simply be together as a community. Following dinner, at 6:30 pm, there are specialized ministries for youth, children, men, and women.

For a marriage to be strong, both spouses need to be growing individually in their walk with Christ. While you are a unit, you are also two individuals who need the empowering of the Holy Spirit to fulfill your roles. Wednesday nights provide the space for that growth to happen simultaneously.

Navigating Conflict: Sin, Grace, and Restoration

Even the most God-centered marriages face conflict. We live in a broken world, and we are all works in progress. In the AG tradition, we don't ignore sin or pretend it doesn't exist in our homes. Whether it's pride, bitterness, or a struggle with addiction, these things must be addressed.

However, we address them with Redemption Language. Instead of weaponizing a spouse's failure to create shame, we point one another back to the cross.

  • Step 1: Confession. Being honest about the "snake" in the room.

  • Step 2: Repentance. Turning away from the behavior and toward God.

  • Step 3: Restoration. Doing the hard work of rebuilding trust through consistent, Christ-like action.

If your marriage is currently in a season of struggle, know that there is hope. The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead is available to breathe life into your relationship.

Definition: Repentance

Repentance is a sincere turning away, in both mind and heart, from self and sin to God. It involves a change of direction that leads to a change of action.

The Word as Your Compass

Finally, a God-centered marriage must be biblically anchored. In the 901, there are a thousand voices telling you how to live, how to parent, and how to "fix" your marriage. Only one voice is eternal.

Make the Bible the final authority in your home. This means more than just having a Bible on the coffee table; it means opening it together. When a disagreement arises, ask, "What does the Word say?" When a financial decision needs to be made, look for biblical principles of stewardship.

When you align your marriage with the Word of God, you aren't just following "rules"; you are stepping into the protection and blessing that God designed for the family.
