Finding a local church is about more than a building; it’s about discovering a community where you can grow in faith and serve others. By seeking a Spirit-led environment rooted in Biblical truth, you find a spiritual home that supports your journey. This guide helps you navigate the search with prayer and wisdom, ensuring your new church family aligns with God’s Word and your heart.
Bible Verses to Guide You
Hebrews 10:24-25 (NIV) "And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another: and all the more as you see the Day approaching."
Psalm 133:1 (NIV) "How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!"
Acts 2:42 (ESV) "And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers."
Seeking Your Spiritual Home
The search for a local church is one of the most significant steps you can take in your walk with Christ. Whether you have recently moved, are new to the faith, or are looking for a community that more closely aligns with your spiritual needs, the process can feel overwhelming. At Boundless Online Church, we believe that while digital fellowship is a powerful tool for growth, the local expression of the Body of Christ is essential for deep-rooted discipleship and accountability.
We help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online, but we also know that the local church is the "hope of the world." Finding a place where you can be known, loved, and challenged is vital.

Step 1: Start with Prayer and Purpose
Before you open a search engine or ask for recommendations, start with a conversation with God. Ask the Holy Spirit to lead you to a congregation where you can not only receive but also contribute. Your spiritual gifts are meant for the edification of the Body.
Ask yourself: What is my primary goal? Are you looking for a place with a strong children’s ministry? Are you a shift worker needing mid-week opportunities? Or perhaps you are a seeker looking for a place that explains the Gospel in clear, simple terms. Knowing your "why" helps narrow the "where."
Step 2: Look for Sound Doctrine
Not every building with a cross on top teaches the same thing. For us at Boundless Online Church, which is a ministry of FA Memphis, we hold firmly to the Bible as the inspired and only infallible and authoritative Word of God.
When researching a potential church, look at their "What We Believe" page. We highly recommend looking for a church that aligns with the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God. These truths cover the essentials:
The salvation of man through faith in Jesus Christ.
The Baptism in the Holy Spirit, which provides power for life and service.
Divine healing as provided in the atonement.
The Blessed Hope: the resurrection of those who have fallen asleep in Christ and their translation together with those who are alive and remain.
A church grounded in these truths will provide a stable foundation for your spiritual growth.
Step 3: Evaluate the Community Atmosphere
A church isn't a museum for saints; it’s a hospital for the hurting and a training ground for the faithful. When you visit or research a church, look for a "welcoming" spirit.
Does the church emphasize "coming as you are"? Do they offer ways to connect outside of the Sunday morning service? Life happens in the "in-between" moments. Look for small groups, Bible studies, or community outreach programs. Step 4: The Practical Search
In today’s world, your search will likely start online. Use tools like ChurchFinder.com or simply search for "Christian churches near me."
As you browse:
Watch a Service: Most churches now stream their services. Watch a few Sunday sermons from your potential choices to get a feel for the teaching style and the atmosphere of worship.
Check the Schedule: If you are a family caregiver or work late shifts, look for churches that offer multiple service times or mid-week gatherings.
Social Media presence: This often gives you a window into the daily life and heart of the church community beyond the pulpit.
Step 5: The In-Person Visit
Once you’ve narrowed it down to two or three, it’s time to visit. Don’t feel pressured to make a decision on the first Sunday. Most pastors and church leaders suggest visiting a church at least three times before deciding.
During your visit, pay attention to:
The Gospel focus: Is Jesus the center of the message?
The Worship: Is it Spirit-led and honoring to God?
The People: Do they genuinely care about one another and the community?
Remember, no church is perfect. You aren't looking for a perfect building or a perfect pastor; you are looking for a healthy community of believers who are seeking to follow Jesus together.

For the Global and Online Seeker
We recognize that for some, finding a local church is physically difficult. You might live in an area where churches are scarce, you might be homebound, or you might be in a part of the world where public worship is unsafe.
Boundless Online Church exists to bridge that gap. We serve as a spiritual home for many who are in transition or who need a consistent community of faith regardless of their physical location. Whether you are a disabled individual seeking accessibility or a worker on the night shift, our digital doors are open. You can find fellowship in our I'm New Q&A Welcome Center or participate in our Bible Study Club.
Committing to the Body
Once you find a church that feels like home, the next step is commitment. Growth happens when we plant ourselves. This means attending regularly, joining a small group, and finding a place to serve.
In the Assemblies of God tradition, we believe in the "Priesthood of all Believers." This means you have a role to play! Whether it's helping with media, greeting newcomers, or praying for others, your involvement is what turns a "place you go" into "your church."

A Prayer for Your Search
Heavenly Father, I thank You that You have not called us to walk this journey alone. Your Word tells us that where two or three are gathered, You are there. Lord, I ask for Your divine guidance as I search for a local church family. Lead me to a place that preaches Your Truth without compromise, a place where the Holy Spirit is welcome, and a place where I can grow in my love for You and others. Open the right doors and give me peace when I find the community You have prepared for me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
