Overcoming addiction is a journey that requires more than just willpower; it requires the transformative power of God’s grace. By surrendering our struggles to Jesus Christ, we find the strength to break chains that once seemed unbreakable. Through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, daily immersion in Scripture, and the support of a faith-filled community, true and lasting freedom becomes a living reality for anyone who believes.
Scripture for the Journey
When we feel weak, God’s Word provides the foundation we need to stand firm. Here are a few verses to hold onto:
1 Corinthians 10:13 (NIV): "No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it."
Philippians 4:13 (NKJV): "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
2 Corinthians 5:17 (ESV): "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come."
John 8:36 (NIV): "So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed."

Understanding the Battle
Addiction is often described as a disease or a habit, but from a biblical perspective, it is also a deeply spiritual battle. It is a weight that entangles us, keeping us from the abundant life God has planned for us. At Boundless Online Church, we believe that meeting Jesus is the first step toward walking away from that weight.
The struggle with substance abuse, or any life-controlling issue, often starts with a search for something to fill a void in the soul. We look for peace, escape, or comfort in things that are temporary and eventually destructive. However, as the Assemblies of God fundamental truths remind us, our primary need is salvation through Christ. When we realize that only God can truly satisfy the hunger of the human heart, the grip of addiction begins to loosen.
The Power of Surrender
The world tells us to "be strong" and "pull ourselves up by our bootstraps." But the gospel tells us something different: when we are weak, then we are strong. Surrender isn't about giving up; it’s about giving over. It’s moving our burdens from our own shaky hands into the capable hands of the Creator.
In the Assemblies of God tradition, we emphasize that salvation is a gift. You don't have to get "clean" to come to God; you come to God to get clean. He meets you exactly where you are, in the middle of the mess, the cravings, and the regret. This act of surrender is the foundation of recovery. It’s acknowledging that we cannot do it on our own and that we need a Savior.

The Holy Spirit: Our Helper in Recovery
One of the most beautiful aspects of our faith is that we aren't left to walk this path alone. Jesus promised us a Helper: the Holy Spirit. For someone overcoming addiction, the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is a game-changer. It provides an "inner-strength" that goes beyond human capability.
The Holy Spirit empowers us to say "no" to the flesh and "yes" to the Spirit. This isn't just about avoiding bad habits; it’s about being filled with a new kind of life. When the cravings hit or the depression feels heavy, the Holy Spirit acts as a Comforter and a Counselor, reminding us of our identity in Christ and giving us the power to endure the moment.
The Process of Sanctification
Recovery is rarely a straight line. It’s a process. In theology, we call this sanctification. It is the ongoing work of God in our lives that makes us more like Jesus every day.
Sanctification involves a daily decision to turn away from the "old man" and put on the "new man." It’s okay if you aren’t perfect tomorrow. What matters is that you are walking with God today. Every time you choose prayer over a drink, or Scripture over a destructive thought, you are participating in the work of sanctification.

Practical Steps for Spiritual Recovery
While the work is spiritual, the application is practical. Here is how you can lean into God’s strength daily:
1. Stay in the Word: The Bible is called the "Sword of the Spirit" for a reason. It is your weapon against the lies that addiction tells you. When the lie says "you'll never change," the Word says "you are a new creation." Try starting your day with a simple Bible study or a verse of the day.
2. Develop a Prayer Life: Prayer is your direct line to Heaven. It doesn’t have to be fancy. A simple "Lord, help me right now" is a powerful prayer. At Boundless Online Church, we believe in the power of prayer to change circumstances and hearts.
3. Find Your Community: God never intended for us to live in isolation. Addiction thrives in the dark and in loneliness. Faith thrives in the light and in community. Whether it's joining an online Bible study or a men's prayer group, connecting with others who are walking the same path is vital.
4. Worship Through the Cravings: When temptation feels overwhelming, put on some worship music. It shifts your focus from your problem to God’s presence. It’s hard to stay focused on a craving when you are declaring the goodness of God.

A Global Church for a Global Struggle
Whether you are working a late-night shift, living in a remote area, or homebound, you are not alone. Boundless Online Church is designed for people who need a spiritual home that meets them where they are. Addiction doesn't keep office hours, and neither does the grace of God.
We invite you to explore our Sunday Sermons or visit our Prayer Wall to share your journey with others. We are a ministry that believes in the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God, meaning we believe in a God who still heals, still delivers, and still transforms lives today.
You Are Not Defined by Your Past
The enemy wants you to believe that your addiction is who you are. He wants to label you "addict," "failure," or "lost cause." But God has a different label for you: "Redeemed," "Child," and "Heir."
Your past is a chapter in your book, but through Jesus, it is not the end of the story. God specializes in taking broken pieces and making something beautiful. He isn't looking for people who have it all together; He's looking for those who are willing to let Him put them back together.

A Prayer for Strength and Freedom
Heavenly Father, I come to You today admitting that I need Your help. I cannot break these chains on my own. I surrender my life, my struggle, and my future to You. Lord Jesus, wash me clean and make me a new creation. Holy Spirit, fill me with Your power so that I can resist temptation and walk in the freedom You have purchased for me. Surround me with a community of believers who will walk with me. I believe that through You, I am more than a conqueror. Amen.
