How to Pray When You Cannot Sleep

Oct 12
2 min read

The clock says it is late, but your mind will not rest. Those quiet hours can become a time to meet with God. Here is how to begin.

The house is quiet. Everyone else is asleep. But you are awake, staring at the ceiling, with thoughts that will not slow down.

If this is you, you are not alone, and you are not forgotten. The long hours of the night can feel lonely. But they can also become a quiet place to meet with God.

Here is something to hold on to. God does not get tired. "Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep." (Psalm 121:4, KJV) While you lie awake, He is already awake, watching over you.

Here are a few simple ways to pray when sleep will not come.

1. Tell God the truth. You do not need fancy words. You can simply say, "Lord, I cannot sleep. My mind is full. Please help me." God welcomes honest prayers.

2. Hand Him your worries one by one. Name each thing that is keeping you up. A bill. A test result. A loved one. After each one, say, "Lord, I give this to You." The Bible invites us to cast our cares on Him, because He cares for us (see 1 Peter 5:7).

3. Remember His goodness. King David wrote about thinking of God in the night: "When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches." (Psalm 63:6, KJV) Think back on times God has helped you before. Thank Him for each one.

4. Pray for someone else. Bring to mind a friend, a neighbor, or a family member. Pray a short blessing over them. Turning our hearts outward can bring us peace.

5. Rest on one verse. Pick one short verse and say it slowly, again and again. Here is a good one for the night: "I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me to dwell in safety." (Psalm 4:8, KJV)

You do not have to pray perfectly. Even if you drift off in the middle of a prayer, that is all right. A child who falls asleep in a parent's arms is still loved.

If sleepless nights keep happening, it is wise to talk with your doctor too. Caring for your body is part of caring for the life God gave you.

Closing prayer: Lord, You never sleep, and You never leave me. Tonight I give You my worries, my plans, and the people I love. Quiet my mind and help me rest in Your care. In Jesus' name, Amen.
