How to Receive the Holy Spirit: Walking in Divine Power

Receiving the Holy Spirit begins at salvation, but God invites every believer into a deeper, empowering experience known as the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. This gift, promised by Jesus, provides divine strength for life and service. By coming to God with a sincere heart, asking in faith, and yielding to His presence, you can walk in the fullness of His power and heavenly grace today.

Bible Verses to Meditate On

Acts 1:8 (NIV) "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

Luke 11:13 (NIV) "If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"

Acts 2:4 (NIV) "All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them."

Galatians 3:5 (NIV) "So again I ask, does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you by the works of the law, or by your believing what you heard?"

Understanding the Gift of the Spirit

If you’ve ever felt like your Christian walk was missing a "spark," or if you've struggled to find the strength to share your faith, you aren't alone. Many people believe that once they accept Jesus, that’s the end of the journey. But in the New Testament, we see that it’s actually just the beginning.

There is a distinct experience available to every believer called the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. At Boundless Online Church, we believe this is one of the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God. It isn't just for "super Christians" or pastors; it is a gift for you, whether you are working a late shift, caring for a family member at home, or searching for God in a place where it’s hard to find a church.

The Difference Between Salvation and the Baptism

When you first say "Yes" to Jesus, the Holy Spirit comes to live inside you. He is the one who convicts us of sin and seals us for heaven. You belong to Him the moment you believe! However, the "Baptism" is a separate and subsequent experience.

Think of it like this: If salvation is like having a well of water inside you to keep you alive, the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is like that well overflowing into a rushing river that impacts everyone around you. It is an "enduement of power" for life and service. Jesus told His disciples to wait for this gift before they went out to change the world. If the first apostles needed it, we certainly do too!

How Do You Prepare Your Heart?

Receiving the Holy Spirit isn't about jumping through hoops or being perfect. It’s about being "thirsty." In the Gospels, Jesus said, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink."

Preparation is really about three simple things:

  1. Acceptance: You must be a born-again believer. If you’ve asked Jesus to be your Savior, you are eligible for the gift.

  2. Expectancy: Believe that God wants to give you this gift. He isn't holding it back. He is a good Father who loves to give good gifts to His children.

  3. Surrender: Be willing to let the Holy Spirit take control. Sometimes we hold onto our dignity or our "control" so tightly that we don't leave room for God to move in new ways.

Practical Steps to Receiving

The most frequent question I get as a pastor is, "Okay, but how do I actually do it?" While there is no magic formula, the Bible gives us a very clear pattern.

1. Ask in Faith God responds to faith. Simply find a quiet place: or even in the middle of your busy day: and ask. "Father, I want everything You have for me. I ask for the Baptism in the Holy Spirit." You don't need fancy words. Just a sincere heart.

2. Receive by Faith Just as you received salvation by faith, you receive this gift by faith. You don't have to wait until you "feel" something. You believe that God is doing what He promised. In Galatians, Paul reminds us that the Spirit is supplied to us because we heard the word with faith.

3. Yield Your Tongue According to the pattern in the Book of Acts, the initial physical evidence of being filled with the Spirit is speaking in other tongues. This isn't something God does to you while you sit passively; it’s something you do with Him. As the Spirit gives the utterance, you begin to speak. It may start as a few words or sounds that you don't recognize. Don't let your mind talk you out of it.

Why Tongues?

For some, the idea of speaking in tongues feels a bit strange or even intimidating. But it is a beautiful, biblical gift. It is a way for your spirit to communicate directly with God without the limitations of your human intellect. It’s a tool for prayer, for building yourself up, and for magnifying God.

Don't worry about how it sounds. Focus on the Giver. When you yield your speech to Him, you are making a profound act of surrender. You are saying, "God, even my words are Yours."

What Happens Next?

Once you receive the Holy Spirit, your life changes, but not always in the way people expect. You might not have "goosebumps" every day, but you will notice a new "boldness" in your spirit.

  • Power for Witnessing: You’ll find it easier to talk about Jesus with your coworkers or family.

  • Deepened Prayer Life: You’ll feel a stronger connection to God when you pray.

  • Fruit of the Spirit: You’ll notice more love, joy, and peace growing in your character.

This isn't a one-time event that you check off a list. It's an ongoing relationship. We are told in the Bible to "be filled" with the Spirit, which in the original language implies a continuous, daily filling. Just like your phone needs to be recharged, our spirits need that daily connection with the Holy Spirit.

Common Obstacles

If you’ve been seeking this gift and feel like you haven't received it yet, don't be discouraged! Here are a few things that sometimes get in the way:

  • Fear: Some people worry they will receive something "weird" or "not from God." But remember Luke 11:13: if you ask for the Holy Spirit, God isn't going to give you something else. You can trust Him.

  • Doubt: You might think, "I'm not holy enough." None of us are! This is a gift of grace, not a reward for good behavior.

  • Over-thinking: Sometimes we try to analyze the process too much. Children are often the quickest to receive because they just believe and act. Try to approach God with that same "childlike" faith.

A Simple Prayer to Receive

If you are ready to receive right now, let’s pray together. You can say these words out loud:

"Heavenly Father, I thank You for the gift of your Son, Jesus. I believe He died for me and rose again. Right now, I ask You for the gift of the Holy Spirit. Jesus, baptize me with Your Spirit and fire. I receive Your power by faith. I yield my life and my tongue to You. Fill me to overflowing so that I can be a witness for You and live a life that honors You. In Jesus' name, Amen."

After you pray that, just begin to praise Him. Let the words of your heart flow out. If you feel the Spirit giving you new words, speak them out in faith!
