Resisting temptation is a daily journey of relying on God’s strength rather than personal willpower. By grounding ourselves in the Word, leveraging the power of the Holy Spirit, and making practical adjustments to our environment, we can find the way of escape God promises. Walking in victory isn't about being perfect; it's about choosing God's path one moment at a time through faith and discipline.
The Good News About the Struggle
Let’s be real for a moment. We all face it.
Whether you are working the late shift in a quiet warehouse, caring for a loved one at home, or navigating a busy office, temptation is a universal human experience. The first thing you need to know is that being tempted is not the same as sinning. Even Jesus, our Savior, was tempted in every way that we are, yet He remained without sin.
When we talk about how to resist temptation, we aren't talking about becoming "super-Christians" who never feel an urge. We are talking about walking in the victory that has already been won for us. At Boundless Online Church, we help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online, and part of that growth is learning how to navigate the messy reality of desire and discipline.
What the Bible Says
Before we dive into the "how-to," let’s look at the foundation. God’s Word is our primary tool for transformation.
1 Corinthians 10:13 (NIV): "No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it."
James 4:7 (NIV): "Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."
Matthew 26:41 (NIV): "Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."

Understanding the Battle
To walk in victory, we have to understand what we are up against. In the Assemblies of God tradition, we believe in the 16 Fundamental Truths, which highlight both the fall of man and the promise of salvation. Because of the fall, our natural "flesh" often desires things that aren't good for us or our relationship with God.
But here is the exciting part: you aren't fighting this battle alone. When you accepted Christ, you were given a new nature and the gift of the Holy Spirit.
1. Recognize and Accept the Urge
One of the biggest mistakes we make is trying to pretend the temptation isn't there. We think if we ignore it, it will go away. Usually, the opposite happens: it just gets louder.
Instead of panic, try awareness. When an urge hits, stop and acknowledge it. Say to yourself, "I am feeling tempted to [insert action] right now." By naming it, you take away its power to hide in the shadows. Notice how it feels in your body. Is your chest tight? Are you feeling restless? Acknowledging these sensations without judging yourself creates a "gap" between the impulse and your reaction. In that gap, the Holy Spirit can work.
2. The Power of the Escape Route
Go back to 1 Corinthians 10:13. God promised a "way out." Sometimes that way out is a literal exit: walking out of a room or putting down your phone. Other times, it’s a mental shift.
If you are a night-shift worker or someone isolated at home, your "way out" might be logging onto our Prayer Wall to pray for someone else. Shifting your focus from your own desire to someone else's need is a powerful way to break the cycle of temptation.

3. Structure Your Environment
Willpower is a finite resource. If you rely on it all day, eventually it will run dry. This is why we need to make good habits easy and bad habits hard.
Remove the Trigger: If social media leads you to comparison or lust, delete the app for a season.
Change the Scenery: If you always feel tempted at a certain time or in a certain chair, move. Go for a walk.
Prepare the Word: Keep a Bible or a faith-based book in the places where you usually struggle.
By adjusting your environment, you aren't just "trying harder": you are "training smarter."
4. Use the 10-Minute Rule
Urges are like waves; they peak and then they recede. If you can outlast the peak, the temptation usually loses its grip. When a strong urge hits, set a timer for 10 minutes. Tell yourself, "I won't act on this for at least 10 minutes."
During those minutes, engage in something that requires your full attention. Listen to one of our Sunday Sermons, clean a room, or call a friend. Often, by the time the timer goes off, the intensity has faded.

Spirit-Empowered Living
We believe in "Spirit-empowered living." This means we don't just follow a set of rules; we live by the power of the Holy Spirit. If you feel weak, ask the Holy Spirit for strength. This is a core part of our faith: that God provides us with the "power from on high" to live a holy life.
Living a holy life isn't about being "stuffy." It’s about being healthy, whole, and free. Temptation wants to put you in a cage; God wants you to walk in the open field of His grace.
Grounding in Your Identity
When you know who you are, you know what you don't do. You are a child of God, bought with a price, and destined for a purpose. When temptation whispers that you "need" something forbidden to be happy, remind yourself of your true identity.
If you want to dive deeper into understanding your identity and the scriptures, I invite you to join our Clarion Call Bible Study. It’s a great place to build your "spiritual muscles" alongside others who are on the same journey.

A Prayer for Strength
Heavenly Father, I thank You that You are faithful. I thank You that You never leave me to fight my battles alone. Lord, when I feel the pressure of temptation, help me to stop and breathe in Your grace. Show me the 'way out' that You have promised. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit so that my desires align with Your heart. I choose to trust Your Word more than my feelings today. Give me the strength to walk in victory, one step at a time. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
