How to Use Your Spiritual Gifts: Serving God and Others with Purpose

Spiritual gifts are Holy Spirit-empowered abilities given to every believer to build up the Church and serve others. Discovering your gift isn't about personal prestige; it’s about being a faithful steward of God's grace. By identifying your unique strengths: whether in teaching, service, or encouragement: you can fulfill your purpose within the Body of Christ and demonstrate God’s love to a world in need.

Bible Verses

"Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms." : 1 Peter 4:10

"There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work." : 1 Corinthians 12:4-6

"We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in proportion to your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully." : Romans 12:6-8

What Exactly Are Spiritual Gifts?

Have you ever wondered why you’re naturally drawn to helping people behind the scenes, while someone else seems to have an endless supply of patience for teaching?

That’s not just personality. That’s the Holy Spirit at work.

At Boundless Online Church, we believe that spiritual gifts are supernatural abilities given by God to help us do His work on earth. They aren't earned, and they aren't for our own benefit. They are "grace-gifts" (the Greek word is charismata) designed to help the church grow and to show the world who Jesus is.

According to the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God, the ministry of the Holy Spirit is central to our life as believers. We believe in the "Baptism in the Holy Spirit," which empowers us for life and service. Part of that empowerment includes these unique gifts.

Why Did God Give You a Gift?

Imagine a human body. If the eye decided it wanted to be an ear, the body wouldn't work very well. If the hand decided it didn't want to help the foot, the whole person would struggle to move.

The Bible uses this exact image to describe the Church. We are the "Body of Christ." God gives different gifts to different people so that when we all work together, the "body" is healthy.

The primary purposes of your gifts are:

  1. To Build Up the Church: Gifts are tools to help other Christians grow in their faith.

  2. To Create Unity: When we realize we need each other’s gifts, we stop competing and start collaborating.

  3. To Reach the World: Our gifts are a sign to the world that Christ has triumphed over darkness.

  4. To Glorify God: When you use your gift well, people don’t just see you: they see the goodness of God.

How to Discover Your Gift

If you aren’t sure what your gift is yet, don't worry. You aren't "giftless." Every single believer has been given at least one. Here is how you can start to figure it out:

1. Look at Your Desires What do you love doing? What makes you feel "alive" when you’re serving? Often, the Holy Spirit places a specific burden or passion in our hearts that aligns with our gifting. If you feel a deep tug to help people who are hurting, you might have the gift of mercy.

2. Listen to Others Sometimes other people see our gifts before we do. Has someone ever told you, "You always know exactly what to say to make me feel better"? That might be the gift of encouragement. Ask a trusted friend or a leader in your Bible study group what strengths they see in you.

3. Just Start Serving The best way to find your gift is to get your hands dirty. Try different things! Help out with a local ministry, volunteer in our online community, or simply look for a need in your neighborhood and fill it. As you serve, you’ll find that certain tasks feel "right" and produce spiritual fruit.

Practical Ways to Use Your Gifts

Using your gift doesn't always mean standing on a stage or behind a pulpit. In fact, most gift-use happens in the "everyday" moments of life.

  • If you have the gift of Hospitality: You might not be able to host a dinner for 20 people, but you can create a welcoming space in an online forum for new believers. You can make people feel seen and valued in a digital chat room or at your workplace.

  • If you have the gift of Giving: It’s not just about the amount; it’s about the heart. You can use your resources to support world missions or help a neighbor with their groceries.

  • If you have the gift of Administration: You are the "glue" that keeps projects moving. You can help organize community events or assist with the logistics of an online ministry.

  • If you have the gift of Faith: You are the one who trusts God when things look impossible. Use that gift to pray for others on our Prayer Wall.

Whether you are a shift worker, a stay-at-home parent, or living in a place where it’s hard to attend a physical church, your gift is needed. We help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online, and your unique contribution is a part of that mission.

The Most Important Ingredient: Love

You could have the most spectacular spiritual gifts in the world, but if you don't have love, the Bible says you’re just making noise (1 Corinthians 13:1).

Gifts are the "how" of ministry, but love is the "why." If we use our gifts to show off or to feel superior to others, we miss the point. The goal is always to serve.

Think of your gift like an engagement ring. The ring is beautiful, but it’s not the main event: it points to the relationship and the promise. Your gift is a sign that points people back to Jesus.

Stewardship and Growth

Just like a muscle, spiritual gifts grow stronger the more you use them. We are called to be "good stewards." This means we are responsible for taking what God gave us and developing it.

Don't be afraid to take a step of faith. If you think you have a gift for teaching, start by sharing a short devotion with a friend or in a small group. If you feel called to lead, look for small opportunities to take initiative.

God doesn’t expect you to be perfect; He just wants you to be available. When you step out in faith, the Holy Spirit provides the power to finish the job.

A Prayer for Your Gifts

Lord, thank You for the unique way You have created me. Thank You for the gifts You have placed in my life through Your Holy Spirit. I ask that You would show me clearly how I can serve others and bring glory to Your name. Help me to be a faithful steward of everything You’ve given me. Open doors for me to use my gifts to build up Your Church and to share Your love with the world. Amen.
