Is the End of the World Near? Signs of the Times and Biblical Hope

When we see headlines about global conflict and natural disasters, it’s natural to wonder if the end is near. While Jesus spoke of signs that would precede His return, He also made it clear that no one knows the exact day or hour. Instead of living in fear of a date on a calendar, we are called to live in the peace and hope of His promised return.

Bible Verses

Matthew 24:36 (NIV) "But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father."

1 Thessalonians 5:1-2 (NIV) "Now, brothers and sisters, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night."

2 Timothy 1:7 (NKJV) "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind."

Explanation: Understanding the Season

If you’ve spent any time on social media lately, you’ve probably seen the videos. People are pointing to the year 2026, citing ancient mystics like Baba Vanga or interpreting the quatrains of Nostradamus. They talk about world wars, massive natural disasters, or even the rise of super-intelligent AI as proof that the "end" is just around the corner.

It’s easy to get caught up in the noise. Human history is full of failed doomsday predictions: remember the Y2K scare or the 2012 Mayan calendar frenzy? Each time, the dates came and went, yet the anxiety they produced was very real.

As a community at Boundless Online Church, we want to look at these questions through a different lens. We don’t look at the future with a spirit of fear, but with a spirit of hope.

The "Signs" Jesus Mentioned

In Matthew 24, the disciples asked Jesus point-blank: "What will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?"

Jesus didn’t give them a specific date. Instead, He described a "season." He spoke of wars, rumors of wars, famines, and earthquakes. He mentioned that these things are the "beginning of birth pains."

If you look at the world today, it’s true that we see these things. We see global instability, rapid technological shifts, and environmental challenges. But the purpose of these signs isn't to make us stockpile supplies in a basement. The purpose is to keep our eyes fixed on Him.

At Boundless, we lean heavily on the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God. These truths remind us of the "Blessed Hope": the resurrection of those who have fallen asleep in Christ and their translation together with those who are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord.

Why 2026?

Why is there so much buzz about 2026 specifically? Much of it comes from "second-hand" attributions to folks like Baba Vanga. Interestingly, research shows that she actually predicted the world wouldn't end until the year 5079.

The reason these predictions gain traction is that they "feel" right because of the tension in our current world. When gas prices rise, AI changes how we work, and conflicts break out, our brains look for a reason or an end point.

But as believers, our "end point" isn't a catastrophe. It’s a reunion.

Living in the "In-Between"

So, if we don't know the date, how are we supposed to live?

We live with "calm power." We don't ignore the news, but we don't let the news dictate our internal peace.

One of the core values we hold is that we are called to be productive while we wait. In the Bible, Jesus told a parable about servants who were given resources to manage while their master was away. He expected them to be busy doing good work when He returned.

That’s why we focus on things like the Clarion Call Bible Study. It’s about growing in faith today, not just wondering about tomorrow. We help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online, regardless of what the headlines say.

Encouragement: Hope Over Hype

If you are feeling anxious about the state of the world, take a deep breath. You are not alone, and your feelings are valid. However, you don't have to stay in that place of worry.

The "Signs of the Times" are reminders that this world is not our final home. They are like mile markers on a long highway. They tell us we are moving toward something, but they shouldn't distract us from the beauty of the journey or the people traveling with us.

Instead of asking, "Is the world ending in 2026?" try asking, "How can I show God's love to someone today?"

When we shift our focus from "when" to "who," everything changes. We focus on the "Who" (Jesus) and the "who" (our neighbors, our families, and our global online community).

If you find yourself spiraling into "doom-scrolling," we invite you to step away and join a conversation that builds you up. Our Prayer Wall is a great place to see that others are walking through similar struggles and to find community support.

A Prayer for Peace

Lord, we thank You that our future is held in Your hands.

When the world feels loud and the headlines are heavy, help us to hear Your still, small voice.

We ask for Your peace to guard our hearts and minds.

Replace our spirit of fear with Your spirit of power, love, and a sound mind.

Help us to be watchmen who are ready, but also workers who are busy sharing Your grace with a world that needs it.

Keep us focused on the hope of Your return and the mission You’ve given us for today.

Amen.
