Is there a hell? What the Bible Says About Eternity

The Bible affirms the existence of hell as a real place of eternal separation from God for those who reject His grace. Described by Jesus as a realm of "outer darkness" and "unquenchable fire," hell represents the final judgment for sin. However, God’s desire is for all to be saved through faith in Jesus Christ, who provides the only way to escape this judgment and receive eternal life.
What the Word Says
When we look at the question of eternity, we have to look at the words of Jesus and the Apostles. The Bible isn't silent on this topic. Here are a few key passages that ground our understanding:
Matthew 25:41 (NIV) "Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.’"
Matthew 10:28 (NIV) "Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell."
Revelation 20:15 (NIV) "Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire."
2 Peter 3:9 (NIV) "The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance."

Facing a Difficult Truth
Let’s be honest: talking about hell is uncomfortable.
In a world that prizes "good vibes only," the concept of eternal punishment feels heavy. It feels harsh.
But at Boundless Online Church, we believe in being real with the Word of God. We aren't here to sugarcoat the truth, because the truth is what actually sets us free.
If you’ve been scrolling through our Evergreen Faith Library, you know we tackle the big questions. And Question 40: "Is there a hell?": is one of the biggest.
The reality is that Jesus spoke about hell more than anyone else in the Bible. He didn't do it to scare people into submission. He did it because He loved people enough to warn them about the cliff they were walking toward.
Think of it like a warning sign on a dangerous mountain road. The sign isn't there to ruin your drive; it's there to keep you on the road so you can reach your destination safely.
Why Does Hell Exist?
One of the most common things we hear is, "How could a loving God send people to hell?"
It’s a fair question. To understand the answer, we have to understand the nature of God and the nature of sin.
God is perfectly holy and perfectly just. Because He is just, He cannot simply ignore evil. Sin isn't just a mistake; it's a rejection of the Source of Life.
The Bible tells us that hell was originally "prepared for the devil and his angels" (Matthew 25:41). It wasn't designed for humanity. However, because God gives us the dignity of free will, He allows us to choose our destination.
C.S. Lewis once famously said that there are only two kinds of people in the end: those who say to God, "Thy will be done," and those to whom God says, in the end, "Thy will be done."
If someone spends their entire life saying they want nothing to do with God, God eventually honors that request by allowing them to be separated from Him for eternity.

What Is Hell Actually Like?
The Bible uses several metaphors to describe hell. Each one paints a picture of a place we should want to avoid at all costs.
1. A Place of Fire The "lake of fire" or "eternal fire" is a recurring theme. It signifies a state of intense suffering and the "second death."
2. A Place of Darkness Jesus often called it "outer darkness." If God is light, then separation from God is the ultimate darkness. It represents the total absence of God’s presence, beauty, and goodness.
3. A Place of Regret The scriptures mention "weeping and gnashing of teeth." This suggests a deep, internal agony and the realization of what has been lost.
As a ministry of FA Memphis, we hold firmly to the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God.
Truth #15 specifically addresses the "Lake of Fire." It teaches that those who do not find their names in the Book of Life will be consigned to everlasting punishment. This is a core doctrine because it underscores the urgency of the Gospel.
The Global Perspective: Why This Matters Now
Whether you are a shift worker in Memphis, a digital nomad in Europe, or someone living in a part of the world where following Jesus is dangerous, the reality of eternity changes how you live today.
For the disabled or those in hospice, the hope of heaven is a lifeline. But that hope is only meaningful because the alternative is real.
We help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online because we know the stakes are eternal. Every person we interact with on our Prayer Wall or in our Bible Study groups is an eternal being.
Hell is the backdrop that makes the "Good News" so incredibly good.

The Escape Route: Jesus Christ
If the story ended with hell, it would be a tragedy. But the story ends with a Cross and an empty tomb.
God’s heart is for you to be with Him. He went to the ultimate lengths: sacrificing His only Son: to make sure you never have to experience hell.
Jesus took the "hell" we deserved upon Himself at Calvary. He endured the separation, the darkness, and the wrath of God so that we could receive His righteousness, His light, and His life.
Salvation is a gift. It’s not something you earn by being "good enough." It’s something you receive by putting your trust in what Jesus has already done.
If you’re feeling a tug on your heart right now, that’s not a coincidence. That’s the Holy Spirit inviting you into a relationship that lasts forever.

A Prayer for You
Lord, thank You for being a God of truth. We thank You that even when the truth is hard, Your love is greater. I pray for the person reading this right now. If they feel fear, replace it with Your peace. If they feel lost, show them the way home. Help us to grab hold of the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ and live with the joy of knowing our names are written in the Book of Life. Amen.
