Kids & Parents: 5 Steps How to Start Bible Reading Habits and Stay Consistent (Easy Guide for Busy Parents)

Let’s be honest: your mornings probably don’t look like a cinematic movie scene. There isn’t always a perfectly timed ray of sun hitting your Bible while you sit in silence for an hour. Instead, there’s likely a toddler asking for juice, a teenager who can’t find their shoes, and a cup of coffee that has been microwaved three times already.

If you’ve ever felt like your spiritual life is stuck in the “I’ll get to it when the kids are older” phase, you aren’t alone. We know that life doesn’t pause, and neither does your need for the peace that only God’s Word can bring. At Boundless Online Church, we believe in 24/7 Church When Life Doesn’t Pause, and that includes finding God in the middle of the mess.

The truth is, you don’t need an hour of silence to meet with God. You just need a plan that fits your real life. Here are five simple, grace-filled steps to help you start a Bible reading habit and actually keep it.

1. Start Small (The Power of Micro-Habits)

The biggest mistake most busy parents make is trying to start with a one-hour deep study. When you have kids, an hour of uninterrupted time is a rare treasure. Instead of aiming for a "feast" that you never have time to cook, start with a "snack."

Micro-habits are small actions that take less than five minutes but build long-term consistency. In the Assemblies of God tradition, we believe that the Bible is our all-sufficient rule for faith and practice. Even a single verse can carry the weight of the Holy Spirit into your day.

Try this: Commit to reading just one chapter or even just five verses a day. If you can do that for a week, you’ve won. You are building the neural pathways of a reader.

2. Use "Habit Stacking" to Find Your Time

If you wait for "free time" to read the Bible, you’ll never find it. Free time for a parent is usually spent catching up on laundry or sleeping. The secret is "habit stacking": attaching your new Bible habit to something you already do every single day.

Think about your daily "anchors":

  • Pouring your first cup of coffee.

  • Waiting in the school car-pool line.

  • The 10 minutes after you tuck the kids in.

  • Washing the dinner dishes.

Instead of trying to create a new time slot, slide the Bible into an existing one. If you read while you drink your coffee, your brain will eventually associate the smell of coffee with the Word of God. That’s a powerful connection!

If your hands are busy, remember that "reading" can also mean "listening." Using an audio Bible while you fold laundry or drive to work is a fantastic way to engage with Scripture. We call this "audio-first" faith formation, and it’s a lifesaver for the modern parent.

3. Choose the Right Tools for Your Season

Not every season of parenting requires the same tools. If you have a newborn, a giant study Bible with tiny print might feel overwhelming. If you have teenagers, you might need something that sparks deeper conversation.

Here are a few ways to diversify your "toolbox":

  • The Physical Bible: Keep it open on the kitchen counter. It’s a visual reminder to you and your kids that God’s Word is central to your home.

  • Digital Apps: Use apps that offer "Verse of the Day" notifications. It’s an interruptive, human hook that brings you back to center when the day gets chaotic.

  • Scripture Cards: Place verses on your bathroom mirror or the fridge. If you need a starting point, check out our guide on 7 Bible Verses for Hope When Life Feels Heavy.

The goal isn't to be a scholar; the goal is to be a follower. Whether it’s a digital screen or a leather-bound book, the Holy Spirit is ready to speak to you through the text.

4. Involve the Kids (The Kitchen Table Moment)

Discipleship doesn't have to be a separate event from your own growth. One of the best ways to stay consistent is to let your children see you reading: or better yet, read with them.

At Boundless, we talk about the "Kitchen Table" moment. It’s that place where faith becomes real, right in the middle of breakfast crumbs and homework. When you read aloud to your children, you aren't just teaching them; you are nourishing your own soul, too.

For younger kids (ages 3–6), focus on the wonder of God’s stories. For older kids (ages 10–12), ask them what they think a verse means. You don’t have to have all the answers. Just the act of opening the Book together creates a rhythm of spiritual literacy that will last a lifetime. If you're looking for a place to start together, our Psalm 23 Verse-by-Verse Study is a great family resource.

5. Choose Grace Over Perfection

This is the most important step. There will be days when the baby is sick, the car won't start, or you're just plain exhausted. You will miss a day. Maybe you'll miss a week.

Do not let guilt keep you away.

The enemy loves to use a "missed day" as a reason to make you quit entirely. But we serve a God of grace. If you miss your morning reading, catch a verse at lunch. If you miss a whole week, just start again today. There is no "catching up" in the Kingdom: there is only walking with Jesus in the present moment.

The Bible is not a textbook you have to finish; it’s a living invitation to know your Creator. As we teach in our family discipleship resources, God is more interested in your heart than your checklist.

5 Micro-Reading Ideas for This Week

  1. Monday: Read Psalm 23 while you eat breakfast.

  2. Tuesday: Listen to one chapter of the Gospel of John on your commute.

  3. Wednesday: Text one verse to a friend or your spouse.

  4. Thursday: Read the "Verse of the Day" on your phone before checking social media.

  5. Friday: Ask your kids to pick a story from their favorite Bible book to read together.

7 Tips to Stay Consistent

  1. Prepare the night before: Put your Bible and notebook where you’ll see them first thing.

  2. Phone a friend: Find a "Bible buddy" to text when you’ve finished your daily reading.

  3. Keep it visible: An open Bible on a table is an invitation.

  4. Pray first: Ask the Holy Spirit to give you "ears to hear" before you read.

  5. Focus on one takeaway: Don't try to learn everything; just find one thing you can use today.

  6. Use a plan: Don't waste time wondering what to read; use a simple 30-day plan.

  7. Celebrate the wins: If you read for three minutes, thank God for that time!
