Kids & Parents: Don't Let Summer Steal Your Family's Faith Rhythm: 5 Simple Ways to Keep Jesus at the Center

The "summer scramble" is a real thing. One week you are navigating the logistics of soccer camps and swim lessons, and the next, you are packing for a family vacation while trying to figure out what to do with the kids who are already claiming they are "bored." Between the late-night popsicles and the erratic travel schedules, the intentional rhythms we worked so hard to build during the school year can start to feel like they are slipping through our fingers.
If you feel like your family’s spiritual life has taken a backseat to the summer sun, take a deep breath. You aren’t failing, and you aren’t alone.
At Boundless Online Church, we believe that summer isn’t the enemy of your family’s faith; it is actually one of the best seasons for organic summer discipleship. When the rigid school schedule falls away, it creates space for something beautiful: a slower, more natural way of walking with Jesus. You don't need a formal classroom or a 45-minute lesson to help your children know God. You just need a few simple, grace-filled habits that meet you right where you are.
Here are five practical ways to keep Jesus at the center of your summer without adding to your "parental burnout."
1. Start Mornings with a Simple Worship Song or Prayer
The way a morning starts often dictates the temperature of the entire home. During the school year, mornings are usually a race against the clock. But in the summer, we have a unique opportunity to set a different tone.
You don't need a full liturgy. Try playing one worship song while you’re making breakfast or folding that never-ending mountain of beach towels. Let the lyrics fill the room. Whether it's a high-energy anthem the kids can dance to or a gentle hymn that brings peace to the kitchen, music has a way of anchoring our hearts in the truth of God’s goodness.
Before everyone scatters to their various activities, take sixty seconds for a "huddle prayer." It can be as simple as, "Lord, thank You for this sunshine and for our family. Help us to be kind to each other today and to see where You are working. Amen." This small habit reminds our children that God isn't just someone we talk to on Sundays; He is the Guest of Honor in our home every single morning.

2. Turn Your Evening Stroll into a Family Prayer Walk
One of the best parts of summer is the extra daylight. Instead of just "going for a walk," turn it into a family prayer walk. This is a wonderful way to engage in Christian parenting summer rhythms that are active rather than sedentary.
As you walk through your neighborhood or a local park, use your surroundings as prompts.
The Neighbors: As you pass a neighbor’s house, pray a quick blessing over the family that lives there.
Creation: If the kids spot a beautiful flower or a cool bug, pause to thank God for His creativity.
The School/Park: Pray for the children who play there and for the teachers who will return in the fall.
Deuteronomy 6:7 tells us to talk about God’s commandments "when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise." Summer walks are the perfect "walk by the way" moments. It teaches your kids that prayer is a conversation we can have anywhere, anytime.

3. Ignite Their Imagination with Faith-Based Bedtime Stories
When the sun stays out late, bedtime can feel like a battle. But if we frame it as "story time," the resistance often melts away. Summer is the perfect time to dive into longer, more immersive stories that point toward the Gospel.
While a children’s Bible is a staple, don’t be afraid to use allegories and adventures to spark their spiritual curiosity. Books like The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis or Little Pilgrim’s Progress are incredible tools for family devotions summer nights.
As you read about Aslan’s sacrifice or Christian’s journey toward the Celestial City, your children are learning deep theological truths about grace, courage, and the Holy Spirit in a way that captures their hearts. These stories provide a natural bridge to deeper questions. “Why was Lucy so brave?” or “How did Jesus help the character when they were scared?” These are the conversations that stick.

4. Create a Simple Summer Prayer Jar
Summer is often a season of big requests: safety for trips, healing for a sick relative, or even just "please let it not rain on my birthday." A "Summer Prayer Jar" is one of the easiest kids Bible activities to implement.
Find a mason jar and some slips of paper. Every time a family member has a request, write it down and pop it in the jar. Once a week, maybe during a Saturday morning breakfast, pull out a few slips and pray for them together.
But here is the best part: when a prayer is answered, move that slip of paper to a "Praise Jar" or mark it with a bright sticker. Seeing a physical jar fill up with God’s faithfulness helps children understand that God is active and listening. It turns abstract faith into a tangible reality they can see on the kitchen counter.
5. Keep One Meal a Day Screen-Free for Faith Conversation
In the age of tablets and "quick bites" between games, the family table is under constant threat. This summer, choose one meal a day, it doesn't have to be dinner; it could be breakfast or a picnic lunch, to be a strictly "no-screen zone."
Use this time for what we call "The High-Low-God" check-in:
High: What was the best part of your day?
Low: What was the hardest part of your day?
God: Where did you see God moving today? (Maybe it was a beautiful sunset, a friend being kind, or a feeling of peace when you were nervous.)
When we remove the digital distractions, we create a sacred space for connection. It’s in these unhurried moments over tacos or sandwiches that the real work of discipleship happens. You aren't just feeding their bodies; you are nourishing their souls.

Grace for the Journey
As you try to implement these ideas, remember the heart of the Boundless Family Faith Library: You do not have to be perfect to disciple your child.
Some days, the morning prayer will be interrupted by a spilled bowl of cereal. Some days, the prayer walk will end early because someone tripped and scraped a knee. That’s okay. God’s grace covers the messy middle of our lives. The goal isn't a flawless record; the goal is a consistent direction toward Jesus.
Summer is a gift: a season of wonder, light, and growth. By choosing just one or two of these simple rhythms, you are telling your children that Jesus isn't just a part of their Sunday; He is the center of their every day.
