Kids & Parents: How Can We Protect Our Children Online?

The short answer is this: Digital safety is not just about filters; it is about discipleship. We protect our children by setting tech boundaries that act as "fences," but we ultimately guard their hearts by teaching them how to walk through the "refining fire" of the digital world without "bowing down" to its idols.
The Digital Front Porch and the Reality of the Screen
If you’ve ever sat on a front porch in Memphis on a humid June evening, you know the feeling of watching the lightning bugs while also keeping a close eye on the street. You want your kids to play, to explore, and to enjoy the neighborhood, but you’re always scanning for anything that doesn't belong.
The digital world is our new neighborhood. But unlike our physical streets, this one never sleeps, and the "traffic" comes directly into our children’s pockets.
For many of us, the screen feels like a heavy weight. We see the anxiety rising in our teens, the shortened attention spans in our little ones, and the constant pull of a world that tells them their worth is found in a "like" or a "view." It’s exhausting to feel like you’re constantly fighting a glowing rectangle for your child’s soul.
At Boundless Online Church, we believe you don’t have to do this alone. Whether you’re a shift worker at the hospital, a parent balancing three jobs, or someone who can’t get to a physical building, we want to help you build a digital home that honors Jesus Christ.
1. Walking Through the Refining Fire
In the book of Malachi, God is described as a "refiner’s fire" (Malachi 3:2). Fire is a powerful thing. It can destroy, but it can also purify. It burns away the "dross", the junk, the impurities, and leaves behind something precious and strong.
The digital world is a furnace. Our children are going to walk through it. Our job isn’t just to keep them away from the fire forever; it’s to make sure that when they are in it, they aren't consumed.
Discipleship is the process of helping our children find their identity in Jesus so that when they see a "perfect" influencer or a hurtful comment, they have a solid rock to stand on. We use the internet to teach them discernment.
Action Step: Use tools like the Boundless Bible Study Podcast found at www.boundlessonlinechurch.org to listen to Scripture together. Let the Word of God be the standard by which they judge everything they see on TikTok or YouTube.

2. No Bowing Down: Rejecting Digital Idols
Do you remember the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in Daniel 3? The King set up a massive gold statue and commanded everyone to bow down when the music played. Everyone did, except those three young men. They refused to bow to an idol, even when the furnace was heated seven times hotter.
Today, the "music" is the notification chime. The "idol" is the image of a life without God, a life defined by fame, secular morality, and self-worship.
Protecting our kids means training them to be like those young men. We want them to have the courage to say, "I will not bow to this."
"I will not bow to the idol of comparison."
"I will not bow to the idol of secrecy."
"I will not bow to the idol of cruelty."
When we talk to our kids about why we have rules, we frame it this way: We don't bow to anything but Jesus.
3. Setting the Digital Fences (Practical Tech Tips)
While discipleship is the heart, we still need "fences." You wouldn't let a toddler play near the Mississippi River without a railing, and you shouldn't let a child roam the open web without a filter.
Here are five practical ways to set fences today:
The Bedtime Curfew: All devices (including yours!) go to a central charging station in the kitchen or living room by 8:00 PM. No screens in bedrooms at night.
The Filtered Home: Use a family-safe DNS or a router-based filter. This acts as the "lock on the door."
The Shared Password: Parents should have access to every account. This isn't about "spying"; it's about stewardship.
The "One-Screen" Rule: Keep computers and tablets in common areas. Secrecy is where the enemy works; light is where healing happens (1 John 1:7).
Age-Appropriate On-Ramps: Delay social media as long as possible. When you do start, start with "training wheels", shared accounts and limited time.

4. Open Windows: The Power of Communication
If your child sees something scary, sexual, or confusing online, what is their first reaction? If their first reaction is fear that they will lose their phone, they will hide it. If their first reaction is trust that you will help them, they will come to you.
We need to build "open windows" in our homes. Proverbs 22:6 tells us to "Train up a child in the way he should go." Part of that training is creating a "Grace Protocol."
Try saying this to your kids: "If you ever click on something by mistake, or if someone sends you something that makes you feel weird, come tell me. You aren't in trouble. I am on your team, and we will handle it together."
When they do come to you, stay calm. Pray with them. This is how the "Refining Fire" works, it brings the hidden things into the light so they can be healed.
5. The Family Altar: Modeling Authentic Faith
Your kids are watching your screen habits more than they are listening to your screen rules. If we are constantly scrolling while they are talking to us, we are modeling that the phone is more important than the person.
Set aside "Sacred Space" in your home. No phones at the dinner table. No phones during family prayer.
If you need a place to start, join us for our live-streamed worship services at www.boundlessonlinechurch.org. Let your kids see you engaging with God through the screen in a way that is healthy, holy, and intentional. When we use technology to draw closer to Jesus, we show our children that the internet can be a tool for the Gospel rather than a trap for the soul.

Your 5-Point Safety Takeaway
Discipleship Over Restriction: Focus on the "why" (loving Jesus) as much as the "what" (rules).
Physical Boundaries: Keep screens out of bedrooms and in public family spaces.
Active Filters: Use technology to block the worst, but use conversation to prepare them for the rest.
The Grace Protocol: Ensure your kids know they can come to you without fear of losing their device.
Model the Way: Show your children what it looks like to prioritize God over the scroll.
A Prayer for Your Family
Heavenly Father, we thank You for our children. They are a heritage from You. We ask for Your wisdom as we navigate this digital age. Help us to lead them with grace and truth. May our homes be places of "Refining Fire" where their character is built, and may our children have the courage to stand tall and never bow down to the idols of this world. Protect their hearts, their minds, and their eyes. In Jesus' name, Amen.
