Kids & Parents: Struggling for Family Discipleship Ideas? 50+ Examples to Build a Stronger Church-Home Partnership

Does the term "family discipleship" make you feel a little bit guilty? Or maybe just exhausted? You aren't alone. Between the morning rush, the soccer practices, and the never-ending pile of laundry, trying to squeeze in a deep theological discussion with a toddler or a pre-teen can feel like trying to fold a fitted sheet, frustrating and slightly impossible.

But here’s the good news: Discipleship isn't about being a perfect theologian. It’s about being a present parent. It’s about taking the ordinary moments of your day and inviting Jesus into them. At Boundless Online Church, we believe your home is the primary place where faith is formed, and our job is to give you the tools to make it happen without the stress.

As it says in Deuteronomy 6:6-7 (NIV): “These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”

Notice the rhythms mentioned: sitting, walking, lying down, and getting up. Discipleship is a lifestyle, not a lecture. To help you get started, we’ve put together 50+ simple, practical, and grace-filled examples to help you build a stronger faith-connection at home.

The Morning Rhythm: High-Energy Hope

The morning sets the tone. You don't need a 45-minute Bible study; you just need a spark of truth before the day gets loud.

  1. The Breakfast Blessing: Before everyone digs in, pray a 10-second prayer thanking God for the food and the day ahead.

  2. Mirror Truths: Write a "Truth of the Week" on the bathroom mirror with a dry-erase marker.

  3. The High-Five Blessing: Give your kids a high-five as they head out, saying, "God is with you today!"

  4. Worship Wake-Up: Play a curated worship playlist while the kids are getting dressed.

  5. Cereal Box Scripture: Tape a verse to the cereal box for them to read while they eat.

  6. Morning Hug & Prayer: A 30-second prayer while you’re still in the "morning snuggle" phase.

  7. The Goal of the Day: Ask, "How can we show Jesus' love at school/work today?"

  8. Scripture Scavenger Hunt: Hide a verse in their lunchbox or backpack.

  9. Creation Observation: Point out something beautiful in nature on the way to the car.

  10. The "Armor of God" Dress-Up: As they put on their shoes and coat, pray they would put on the armor of God.

The Midday Connection: On-the-Go Grace

Whether you are in the carpool lane or sitting at a park, these are the "walking along the road" moments.

  1. The "Red Light" Prayer: Every time you hit a red light, pray for one person together.

  2. Nature Gratitude: Identify three things in God's creation you are thankful for right now.

  3. Car Karaoke: Sing along to your favorite Christian artists or children’s worship songs.

  4. The "Wait" Prayer: If you're stuck in a long line, pray for the people around you.

  5. Audio Bible Adventure: Listen to a dramatized Bible story during the drive.

  6. Question of the Day: Ask, "What was the kindest thing you saw today?"

  7. Kindness Challenge: Find one way to serve a neighbor or a stranger together.

  8. Prayer for Friends: Mention their friends by name and ask God to bless them.

  9. The "I'm Sorry" Moment: Model discipleship by apologizing to your child if you lose your cool in traffic.

  10. God-Sightings: Ask, "Where did you see God working today?"

The Evening Reflection: Bedtime Peace

This is the time for safety, wonder, and winding down. This is where the deep heart-work often happens.

  1. High/Low/God: Share the best part of your day, the hardest part, and where you saw God.

  2. The 5-Finger Prayer: Thumb (those closest to us), Pointer (teachers/leaders), Middle (government), Ring (the weak/sick), Pinky (me).

  7. Silent Listening: Spend 60 seconds in silence, asking the Holy Spirit to speak to your hearts.

  8. Scripture Lullabies: Play soft instrumental worship or scripture songs as they drift off.

  9. Character Affirmation: Tell them one way you saw them act like Jesus today.

  10. Forgiveness Check: "Is there anyone we need to forgive before the sun goes down?"

The 16 Truths: Building a Biblical Foundation

At Boundless, we align with the Assemblies of God 16 Fundamental Truths. Here is one simple way to teach each truth to your children:

  1. The Bible (Truth 1): Hold the Bible and say, "This is God's true story for us."

  2. The Trinity (Truth 2): Use a three-leaf clover or a family photo to explain: "One God, three Persons."

  4. The Fall (Truth 4): Talk about why we need a Savior when we make "wrong choices."

  5. Salvation (Truth 5): Use a bridge analogy, Jesus is the bridge back to God.

  6. Baptism & Communion (Truth 6): Look at photos of a baptism and talk about what the water represents.

  7. Holy Spirit (Truth 7): Compare the Holy Spirit to the wind, you can't see Him, but you see His power.

Strengthening the Church-Home Partnership

Discipleship isn't meant to be done in isolation. The church is here to support the home, and the home is where the church's teaching takes root. When we work together, our children develop a faith that isn't just "Sunday morning" faith: it becomes their "every day" life.
