Kids & Parents: The Brave Little Corgi and the Morning Prayer

The sun was just beginning to peek over the green hills, painting the sky in shades of peach and soft gold. Inside the cozy house on the corner, Barnaby the corgi was wide awake. Barnaby was a very fluffy dog with very short legs and very big ears that could hear the sound of a treat bag opening from three rooms away. But today, Barnaby’s big ears were tucked back just a little bit. Today was a big day, and even though he was a good dog, he felt a little bit nervous.

Today was the day of the Great Neighborhood Parade! There would be loud drums, giant balloons, and many new faces. For a little corgi with short legs, the world can feel very big and very noisy sometimes. Barnaby sat on his favorite rug, watching the shadows dance on the floor, wondering if he was really brave enough for such a big adventure. He let out a tiny, worried "woof."

Just then, he heard the pitter-patter of small feet. It was Sam, a three-year-old boy with messy morning hair and a smile that always made Barnaby’s tail wag. Sam knelt down on the rug right next to Barnaby. He didn't have his shoes on yet, but he had something very important to do before the day started.

"Don't worry, Barnaby," Sam whispered, patting the dog’s soft head. "We are going to talk to God first. My mommy says that when we talk to God, He helps us feel brave inside."

Sam’s mom sat down with them, her hands resting gently on Sam’s shoulder and Barnaby’s back. They closed their eyes, and the room felt very quiet and very safe. Sam’s mom began to pray. "Dear God, thank You for this beautiful morning. Thank You for Sam and for Barnaby. Today is a big, exciting day, and sometimes big days can feel a little bit scary. But we know You are with us."

She opened her Bible and read a special promise from Joshua 1:9: "Be strong and brave... the Lord your God is with you wherever you go." Sam repeated the words, using his hands to show his muscles for "strong" and taking a big, stomp-step for "brave." Barnaby watched Sam closely. He didn't have muscles to show, but his tail started to go thump-thump-thump against the floor. He realized that if God was going to the parade, too, then maybe it wasn't so scary after all.

After their prayer, Sam’s mom helped Sam make a "Brave Badge" out of a paper circle and a piece of bright blue ribbon. Sam even made a tiny one for Barnaby’s collar! When they stepped outside, the air was cool and the drums were already starting to beat in the distance. Instead of hiding behind Sam’s legs, Barnaby trotted out front, his ears held high and his Brave Badge shining in the sun. He knew he wasn't alone. God was with him at the breakfast table, God was with him on the sidewalk, and God would be with him all the way to the end of the parade.

At Boundless Online Church, we believe that family discipleship starts with these small, "Walk & Wonder" moments. Whether you are a parent of a preschooler or a pre-teen, teaching your children that God is present in their everyday fears and triumphs is the foundation of a lifelong faith. We love sharing these Christian short stories because they give parents a simple way to start deep conversations at the kitchen table.

Helping your child navigate big emotions like fear or nervousness doesn't require a long sermon. It often just requires a "morning pause." By creating a rhythm of prayer and Scripture, you are giving your child: and maybe even the family dog: a sense of security that stays with them all day long.

3 Simple Ways to Build Brave Rhythms This Week:

  • The Muscle Verse: Practice Joshua 1:9 with your child. Have them show their "strong muscles" and take a "brave step" while saying the words. This helps little ones connect the truth of the Bible to their physical bodies.

  • The Brave Badge: If your child is nervous about a doctor's visit or a first day of school, make a simple "Brave Badge" together. Write the words "God is with me" on it to remind them of His promise.

  • The Morning Blessing: Before you head out the door, take thirty seconds to pray together. You can even pray for the pets! It reminds everyone that we don't go into the world on our own strength.
