Kids & Parents: The Great Screen Swap : Why Your Kids Need Less Tech and More Jesus This Summer

Summer in 2026 feels a little different, doesn't it? If you’ve stepped into a coffee shop or scrolled through your (hopefully limited) social feed lately, you’ve likely felt the shift. There’s a quiet revolution brewing in living rooms and neighborhood parks across the country. Parents are tired. Not just "end of the school year" tired, but digitally tired.

We’ve all been there: the sun is shining, the birds are chirping, and yet the glow of a tablet is the only thing illuminating your child's face. We use screens as a "digital babysitter" because, let’s be honest, parenting is hard and we need a minute to breathe. But as the "Screen-Free Childhood" movement gains massive momentum, many of us are realizing that while screens give us a temporary break, they might be stealing something much more valuable from our kids: the capacity for stillness, wonder, and a deep connection with Jesus.

At Boundless Online Church, we believe summer shouldn't just be about surviving the heat; it should be about thriving in the Light. This year, we’re inviting you to join The Great Screen Swap. It’s not about shaming you for using technology: it’s about empowering you to trade thirty minutes of "scroll time" for thirty minutes of "Soul time."

The "Tech Exit" is Exploding (And You’re Invited)

You aren't alone in feeling like the digital world is closing in. This movement has gone mainstream. From the global "Smartphone Free Childhood" initiative to the local "Osprey Kids" pacts started by Ben and Erin Napier, parents are linking arms to say, "Not yet." They are delaying smartphones until high school and social media even longer.

Thinkers like Clare Morell with The Tech Exit and the deep-dive reporting in Christianity Today are highlighting a vital truth: our kids’ brains and souls need a break from the constant dopamine hits of the digital world. Even leaders like the (fictionalized but culturally resonant) Pope Leo XIV have recently called for a "reclamation of the family table" from the grip of the silicon screen.

The goal isn't just to have "less bad stuff" in our homes. The goal is to make more room for Jesus.

The Scripture Bridge: Finding God in the Stillness

There is a profound reason why screens feel so draining to the spirit. In Psalm 46:10, God gives us a clear command: "Be still, and know that I am God."

Screens are the enemy of stillness. They are designed to be loud, fast, and infinitely distracting. When a child (or an adult!) is constantly stimulated by a glowing rectangle, the "quiet, small voice" of the Holy Spirit has a hard time getting through. Stillness isn't just "doing nothing": it is the fertile soil where faith grows.

When we turn off the devices, we aren't just creating silence; we are creating a sanctuary. We are giving our children the space they need to wonder about God, to ask deep questions, and to learn how to hear His voice.

Don’t Just Say "No": Say "Grow"

The mistake many of us make is taking the tablet away and leaving a vacuum. Nature: and children: abhor a vacuum. If you just say "no screens," you’ll likely be met with "I’m bored" within ninety seconds.

The secret to a successful screen-free summer is the Swap.

Instead of just cutting tech, we replace it with something more beautiful, more tactile, and more spiritually rich. We want to give our kids something to do that engages their hearts and hands.

The 30-Minute Daily Screen Swap

Here is the challenge: Pick 30 minutes every day: maybe it’s right after breakfast or during that late-afternoon "witching hour": and swap the screens for a faith-filled activity.

This is where the Boundless Family Faith Library comes in. We’ve designed resources that aren't "cheesy" or shallow. We’re talking about:

  • Illustrated Bible Stories that feel like heirloom books.

  • Printable Bible Worksheets that challenge their minds.

  • Faith-Based Coloring Pages that allow for creative meditation.

  • Family Devotionals that spark real conversation, not just "yes or no" answers.

10 Screen-Free Faith Activities You Can Do TODAY

Ready to start the swap? You don’t need a degree in theology or an art license. You just need to be present. Here are ten simple ways to bring more Jesus into your screen-free moments:

  1. The "Creation Walk": Head outside for 15 minutes. Challenge your kids to find five things God made that have a specific texture (fuzzy, smooth, rough).

  2. Scripture Scavenger Hunt: Give them a verse (like "God is light") and have them find three objects in the house that represent that verse.

  3. The Blessing Jar: Spend 10 minutes decorating a jar. Every time someone sees God do something cool or feels thankful, write it on a slip of paper and put it in.

  4. Audio Bible Adventures: If you need a "hands-off" moment, put on a high-quality audio Bible or a Christian kids' podcast while they color. It’s "audio-first" faith formation!

  5. Kitchen Table Church: Use our Sunday Worship Notes to recap the weekend message over snacks.

  6. Prayer Doodles: Give them a piece of paper and ask them to draw their prayers for their friends, their school, or their city.

  7. Act It Out: Read a Bible story (like David and Goliath or the Miraculous Catch of Fish) and have the kids "stage" it using pillows and blankets.

  8. Hymn Sing-Along: Put on some worship music and just sing. No lyrics on a screen: just the melody in your hearts.

  9. Letter to a Hero: Have your child write a physical letter or draw a picture for a missionary or a local church leader.

  10. The "Be Still" Minute: Set a timer for just 60 seconds. Everyone sits in total silence, then shares one thing they thought about God during that minute.

You Are the Primary Disciple-Maker

Remember, you are the most influential person in your child’s spiritual life. Not a YouTube influencer, not a video game character, and not even their Sunday school teacher. You.

When you choose to put down your own phone and pick up a Bible storybook with them, you are modeling what it looks like to value the Eternal over the Ephemeral. This summer, let’s reclaim our focus. Let’s trade the scroll for the Soul.
