A Story for Young Hearts on Mission
Today's mission? Simple. Secret. And completely game-changing.
Because sometimes the biggest acts of love start with the smallest decisions. And sometimes, Jesus uses kids to light up the world in ways grown-ups forget are possible.
Let's meet someone who's about to discover that.
The Story: Marcus and the Monday Plan
Marcus noticed it on Monday morning during math.
Maya's lunch box looked smaller than usual. And when she opened it at snack time, there was only a squished granola bar inside. No apple. No sandwich. No juice box like everyone else had.
She ate it slowly. Really slowly. Like she was trying to make it last.
Marcus looked at his own lunch. Mom had packed him two sandwiches today because he'd mentioned being hungry yesterday. He had string cheese. A bag of pretzels. An orange. A cookie.
He could share.
But what if the other kids laughed? What if Maya got embarrassed? What if it made things weird?
Marcus zipped his lunch box shut and pretended not to notice.
All through reading time, though, something felt wrong. Like his heart was tugging at him. Like someone was whispering, You could help her. You should help her.
At recess, Marcus stood by the fence and prayed a short prayer. "God, I don't want Maya to be hungry. But I don't want to be weird either. What do I do?"
And then he had an idea.
The next morning, Marcus left his extra sandwich in a brown paper bag on Maya's desk before anyone else got to class. No name on it. Just a note: "God loves you. So do I. , A friend."
He watched from his seat as Maya found it. Her eyes got wide. She looked around the room, confused but smiling. Then she tucked the sandwich into her lunch box like it was treasure.
Marcus felt warm inside. Like something bigger than him was happening.
On Wednesday, he left her an orange.
On Thursday, crackers and a juice box.
By Friday, three other kids had joined him. They called it the Secret Kindness Mission. No one knew who started it. And Marcus liked it that way.
Because this wasn't about being seen.
It was about showing Jesus' love when nobody was watching.
And that, Marcus was learning, was the best kind of mission.

Why This Story Matters
This isn't about being perfect. It's about being obedient when God nudges your heart. Marcus didn't rescue Maya from poverty. He didn't fix everything. But he listened. He acted. And Jesus used that small obedience to start a movement.
That's what the Kingdom looks like, kids loving kids, one lunch at a time.

Parent Discussion Guide: Heart of the Story
This story invites children into the beautiful tension between wanting to help and fearing what others might think. Marcus's journey mirrors what many kids face: the Holy Spirit's gentle conviction, the inner battle between comfort and courage, and the joy that comes from obedience.
Theological Roots / Assemblies of God Truth:
The Assemblies of God affirms that believers are called to be witnesses of Christ in both word and deed (Acts 1:8). This story reflects the doctrine of Christian service and compassion: living out the command to love our neighbors as ourselves (Mark 12:31). It also emphasizes the work of the Holy Spirit, who convicts, guides, and empowers us to act in love.
Children are not too young to be led by the Spirit. They are not too small to be on mission. And their acts of obedience, however humble, matter deeply in the Kingdom of God.
