A Message from FA Memphis
Starting your faith journey doesn't have to be complicated or overwhelming. Mastering the basics of faith means understanding that God loves you, Jesus redeemed you, and the Holy Spirit empowers you to live a full life. It is about building a daily relationship with your Creator through Scripture and prayer, shifting from simply knowing about God to truly knowing Him as your Father and Savior.
The Foundation: Why Basics Matter
When you first start following Jesus, it feels like stepping into a brand-new world. You might hear words like "sanctification," "justification," or "intercession" and feel like you need a theological degree just to say hello to God. But here is the good news: God isn't looking for experts; He’s looking for sons and daughters.
Faith 101 isn't about passing a test. It’s about building a house. If the foundation is shaky, the rest of the building won't hold up when the storms of life hit. By mastering these basics, you are clearing the ground and pouring a solid concrete base of truth that will support you for the rest of your life.

Bible Verses to Anchor Your Heart
Before we dive into the "how-to," let’s look at what the Word of God says about the start of this journey:
Ephesians 2:8-9: "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast."
Psalm 119:105: "Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path."
Romans 10:17: "Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ."
1. The Word: Your Instruction Manual
The first step in mastering faith is recognizing where our truth comes from. At Boundless Online Church, we believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God. It isn't just a historical record; it is a living document meant to guide your daily decisions.
Think of the Bible as your "GPS" for life. Without it, you’re just guessing which way to turn. When you read the Word, you aren't just gaining information, you are encountering the Person of Jesus. If you are brand new, start in the Gospel of John. It’s the perfect place to see the heart of Jesus in action. 2. Salvation: The Great Exchange
You cannot "master" faith until you understand what Jesus did for you. This is the "Great Exchange." We were separated from God because of sin, but Jesus took our place on the cross. He took our guilt, and in exchange, He gave us His righteousness.
Salvation is a gift. You don't earn it by being "good enough." You receive it by believing that Jesus is Lord and that God raised Him from the dead. This is the moment your life changes forever. If you’ve ever wondered about the weight of your past, remember that the assurance of forgiveness is a promise God keeps every single day.

3. The Holy Spirit: Your Daily Power Source
One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is trying to live the Christian life on their own strength. You’ll burn out in a week if you try that! God knew we couldn't do it alone, so He sent the Holy Spirit to dwell within us.
The Holy Spirit is our Comforter, Guide, and Power Source. In the Assemblies of God tradition, we emphasize the Baptism in the Holy Spirit as an experience that empowers us for witnessing and service. It’s like moving from a bicycle to a turbocharged engine. If you want to dive deeper into this, we have a great resource on what the Baptism of the Holy Spirit is and how you can experience it.
4. Prayer: Simply Talking to Your Father
Prayer is often the most intimidating part of faith for beginners. We think we have to use "King James" English or pray for three hours straight. But prayer is just conversation.
God wants to hear about your day, your fears, your joys, and your needs. There is no formula. You can pray while you’re driving, while you’re washing dishes, or in a quiet room at 5:00 AM. The goal is connection, not performance. If you are struggling with a specific burden, like caregiving or stress, remember you can find rest in Jesus through simple, honest prayer.

5. Community: You Weren’t Meant for Solitary Confinement
Faith is personal, but it was never meant to be private. We need each other. Growing in faith happens best when we are connected to a body of believers who can encourage us, pray for us, and keep us accountable.
This is why we emphasize the importance of groups. Whether it’s an online Bible study or a local gathering, being around other Christians helps you grow faster than you ever could on your own. For those in the Memphis area or online, Wednesday night family groups are a fantastic way to find that "village" of support.
Practical Steps to Master the Basics
How do you put this into practice starting today? Here is a simple "101" daily routine:
Read: Spend 10 minutes reading one chapter of the New Testament.
Reflect: Ask yourself, "What does this tell me about God’s character?"
Pray: Talk to God for 5 minutes. Thank Him for the day and ask for help with one specific thing.
Connect: Reach out to a fellow believer or join an online Bible study category to see what others are learning.

Pastoral Insight: Don’t Be Afraid of Questions
As you walk this path, you’re going to have questions. That’s okay! God isn't offended by your curiosity or even your doubts. In fact, seeking answers is how your faith becomes "your own" rather than just something you heard someone else say.
Whether you’re dealing with overcoming shame or just trying to figure out how to be a better parent, God’s grace is sufficient for you. Take it one day at a time. Faith is a marathon, not a sprint.
A Prayer for the Journey
Lord Jesus, thank You for meeting me right where I am. I want to know You more. Help me to understand Your Word and to hear Your voice. I give You my life and ask that You lead me. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit so that I can live the life You have planned for me. Thank You for Your grace that covers my past and Your hope that secures my future. Amen.
