Milo’s Brave Night: Remembering God is Near

Remembering God is Near

A Note for Parents: Helping a child navigate fear is one of the most sacred opportunities we have as parents. At this age, children don't need complex theology; they need the simple, steady presence of a God who loves them. When the lights go out, the world can feel big and unpredictable to a three-to-six-year-old. This story is designed to help you and your child name the "worry" and replace it with the "Who", the Prince of Peace.

As you read this together, remember that fear isn't a sign of weakness in your child; it is an invitation to experience God’s strength. By teaching them early that they can talk to Jesus at any moment, you are building a foundation of 24/7 faith that will sustain them for a lifetime.

Milo’s Brave Night: Remembering God is Near

The sun had gone to sleep, and the stars were beginning to twinkle. The world was quiet, cozy, and ready for rest. Outside, the crickets sang a slow, sleepy song, and the moon hung in the sky like a giant, glowing nightlight.

Milo hopped into bed in his favorite blue star pajamas. He loved these pajamas because the stars felt like a secret map to the sky. He gave his stuffed lamb, Button, a very big squeeze. Button was soft, fuzzy, and always ready for an adventure, even the adventure of going to sleep.

But when Mama turned off the big light, the room felt different. The shadows on the wall looked like giant, wiggly fingers. The chair in the corner didn't look like a chair anymore; it looked like a tall, silent mountain.

The wind went whoosh against the window, making the tree branches rattle. Milo’s tummy felt like it had tiny, fluttery butterflies inside. He didn't like the butterflies. They made him want to hide. Milo pulled his blanket up high, all the way over his nose. "I’ll stay right here where it’s safe," he whispered to Button.

Under the covers, it was very dark. Milo could hear his heart going thump-thump-thump. He closed his eyes tight, but he could still hear the whoosh and the rattle. He felt very small in his very big bed.

Suddenly, the door creaked open just a tiny bit. A warm, golden light spilled onto the floor as Mama stepped inside. The light chased away the shadows on the rug and made the room feel soft again.

Mama sat on the edge of the bed and stroked Milo’s curls. Her hand felt cool and kind. "Milo," she whispered, "did you know the Bible has a special secret for when we feel afraid?"

Milo peeked one eye out from under the blanket. "Is it a secret for the dark?"

Mama smiled and nodded. "It’s a secret for anytime and anywhere. God tells us in Psalm 56:3, 'When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.'"

"But Mama," Milo asked, "how do I put my trust in God when it’s so dark? I can't see Him."

"We talk to Him," Mama said softly. "Even when we can’t see Him, He sees us. He is closer than the air you breathe. We tell Him our fears and ask Him to fill our hearts with His peace. Trusting God is like holding His hand in the dark."

Milo took a deep breath. He closed his eyes tight and whispered, "Dear God, the shadows feel big, but I know You are bigger. Thank You for being right here in my room. Please help me feel Your peace. Amen."

Milo opened his eyes. The wind went whoosh again, but this time, it sounded like a soft lullaby, like God was humming the world to sleep. He remembered Mama’s words. God wasn't far away in the clouds; He was right there, tucked into the corners of the room, watching over him.

Milo slowly lowered his blanket. He looked at the shadows again. They weren't scary fingers anymore; they were just the trees waving hello, dancing in the wind. The chair was just a chair, and the mountain was just his laundry pile.

The room didn't feel lonely. It felt full of God’s love, like a warm hug that never ends. Mama gave Milo a kiss on his forehead. "You are never alone, Milo. God is the Light that never goes out."

Milo snuggled back into his pillow. "Thank You, God, for my cozy bed and for Your brave peace," he whispered. Button the lamb felt soft, and Milo’s heart felt steady and still. The night was good because God was in it.

Talk About It:

  1. What is one thing that makes you feel a little worried at night?

  2. When Milo felt afraid, what was the "special secret" Mama shared from the Bible?

  3. Can we say Milo’s special Bible verse together? "When I am afraid, I put my trust in you." (Psalm 56:3)

Discipleship at Home: Building a Brave Heart

Fear is a natural part of growing up. For a young child, the imagination is a powerful tool that can sometimes create "monsters" out of shadows. As parents, we can use these moments to introduce the Holy Spirit as our Comforter.

Here are three ways to help your child use this story this week:

  1. The Scripture Shield: Practice saying Psalm 56:3 during the day when things are bright and happy. Make it a game! When you say "When I am afraid," they shout "I will trust in You!"

  2. The Prayer Walk: Before bed, walk through the room together. Pray over the bed, the windows, and the door. Ask God to station His angels there. This helps the child see their physical space as being under God's protection.

  3. The Nightlight Truth: If you use a nightlight, tell your child it’s a reminder of Jesus, the Light of the World. Just as the small light pushes back the dark, Jesus’ love pushes back fear.

At Boundless Online Church, we believe that discipleship doesn't just happen on Sunday mornings, it happens at 2:00 AM when a child has a bad dream. It happens at the breakfast table and in the car. We are here to support you in being the primary spiritual leader in your child's life. For more resources like this, visit the Boundless Family Faith Library.

A Simple Prayer: Dear Jesus, thank You for being our Prince of Peace. When we are afraid, help us to trust You. Thank You that You never sleep and You are always watching over us. We love You. Amen.

May you sleep deeply, knowing you are safe in God’s hands. You are loved, you are brave, and you are His.
