Missions: Can Digital Church Really Reach the Nations?

Yes. Digital church can help reach the nations by sharing the Gospel, teaching Scripture, and building a real discipleship community across distances. When it stays Bible-centered, Spirit-empowered, and connected to healthy local churches, technology becomes a tool God can use to fulfill the Great Commission—starting in Memphis and stretching worldwide.

First Assembly Memphis exists to proclaim the Gospel, make disciples, and serve the 901—and Boundless Online Church helps extend that mission beyond geography as a bridge to community and discipleship.

The Heart of the Commission (2026)

As we step into 2026, the Assemblies of God theme is "Commissioned." It’s a powerful word that echoes the final instructions Jesus gave His followers in Matthew 28. But what does that look like in a world that is increasingly digital? Is the "Great Commission" limited to physical travel, or does it include the fiber-optic cables running under our streets in Memphis?

We believe that being "commissioned" means taking the Light wherever people gather.

Today, billions of people gather in digital spaces. If we are to be faithful to the call, we must be present where the people are. From the coffee shops in Cordova to the high-rises in Tokyo, the message remains the same: Jesus is Lord, and His grace is available to all.

From the 901 to the Ends of the Earth

There is something special about the 901. Memphis has always been a city of movement, of music, of trade, and of soul. At First Assembly Memphis, we don’t just see ourselves as a building on a map in Cordova; we see ourselves as a launchpad.

When we talk about digital church, we aren’t just talking about a video stream. We are talking about a spiritual pipeline. Through Boundless Online Church (https://www.boundlessonlinechurch.org), people can engage with the Gospel who might never step foot inside a traditional sanctuary.

Digital outreach isn't replacing the local church; it's acting as an "on-ramp." People often check out a church online before visiting in person, and that can be a healthy first step toward real community and discipleship.

Boundless: More Than a Livestream

You might wonder, "Can you really have 'church' on a screen?" To answer that, it helps to look at what church actually is. The church isn't brick and mortar; it’s the Ecclesia—the called-out people of God.

Sin + Solution (clear and simple):

  • The problem (sin): Sin separates people from God (Romans 3:23; 6:23). Many people also feel isolated, ashamed, or disconnected—and distance can become another barrier that keeps them from hearing the Gospel and finding community.

  • God’s solution (Jesus): Jesus saves by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8–9). He forgives, restores, and brings people into His family (2 Corinthians 5:17).

  • How digital helps: Digital ministry can remove a geography barrier so people can hear the Word, respond to Jesus, and begin real discipleship—while still encouraging connection to a healthy local church whenever possible.

Digital ministry helps remove the "geographical tax" on access to teaching and community. Boundless Online Church serves as a bridge for those who can’t easily attend in person.

The Great Commission: The instruction of the resurrected Jesus Christ to his disciples to spread the gospel and the teachings of Christianity to all the nations of the world (Matthew 28:16–20).

Our "WHY" is simple: We want to see the world reached. First Assembly Memphis exists to be a place where the 901 finds hope, and that commission does not stop at the Shelby County line.

Addressing the Skeptics: Is Digital Connection "Real"?

One of the biggest questions we hear is whether digital discipleship can produce "real" fruit. Can someone truly grow in their faith through a smartphone?

The answer is a resounding yes, provided there is intentionality. Discipleship is about relationship and transformation. While nothing replaces the "laying on of hands" or the physical presence of a church family, digital platforms allow for:

  1. Immediate Access to Scripture: Sharing the Word in real-time across time zones.

  2. Consistent Community: Life Groups that can meet via video call for those who are homebound or traveling.

  3. Global Prayer: A digital prayer wall where a request from Memphis can be covered by a believer in London within seconds.

Discipleship: The intentional process of growing as a dedicated follower of Jesus Christ, learning His teachings, and maturing in faith through the power of the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit in the Digital Space

As an Assemblies of God congregation, we hold firmly to the belief in the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. Some might ask, "Can the Holy Spirit move through a Wi-Fi signal?"

If we believe God is omnipresent, then we must believe He is not limited by bandwidth. People can experience the presence of God while watching a service at home. The Holy Spirit is not confined to a room or a platform. When believers pray in Memphis and the 901, God can meet people anywhere in the world.

The "On-Ramp" Strategy

We don't want people to stay behind a screen forever if they have the option to be in person. Our digital strategy is an "on-ramp." It’s about meeting people where they are, on their phones, in their grief, or in their curiosity, and inviting them into a deeper walk with Christ.

For those in Memphis, the digital experience often leads to a physical seat in our sanctuary. For those outside our area, it leads to a "Boundless" community where they are known, loved, and discipled.

A Daily Quest for the Commissioned

Living "Commissioned" isn't a one-time event; it’s a daily lifestyle. Whether you are a long-time member of First Assembly or you just found us through a Google search, here is a simple task to align your heart with the mission today.

Today’s Quest: Spend 5 minutes praying for someone in a different time zone who might be searching for hope online right now. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide them to a community (like Boundless) where they can hear the Truth.

Looking Ahead: The Future is Boundless

As we look at the remainder of 2026, we are excited. We see a future where First Assembly Memphis continues to be a pillar of the Cordova community while simultaneously being a light to the nations.

We are not just a church with a website; we are a people on a mission. We are commissioned. We are focused. And we are boundless.

If you’ve been skeptical about digital church, we invite you to see it as a tool, a modern-day Roman Road. The roads the early church used were built for commerce and war, but the believers used them for the Gospel. We are doing the same with the internet.
