Moving to Memphis? How Do I Find the Right Church Home?

Tier 1 Unchurched & Dechurched Adults (Memphis & 901)

Look for a healthy local church where Jesus is preached, the Bible is taught, and the Holy Spirit is welcomed—and where you can move from “watching” to belonging. Visit in person, meet leaders, try a small group, and choose a church that helps you grow as a disciple.

Moving to a new city can feel exciting and lonely at the same time. One of the fastest ways to get grounded is finding biblical community—and for many of us, that means finding a church home in Memphis / Cordova (the 901).

From a Pentecostal (Assemblies of God–aligned) worldview, church isn’t just a Sunday event. It’s a Spirit-led, Bible-centered family where we worship, learn Scripture, pray for one another, and grow together (Acts 2:42–47; Hebrews 10:24–25). If you’re visiting churches right now, I’m genuinely cheering you on.

WHY this matters: FA Memphis exists to proclaim the Gospel, make disciples, strengthen families, equip leaders, serve Memphis, and reach the world—and Boundless Online Church helps us care for people who can’t be here in person.

1. Worship Style & Sunday Schedule Matter

Sunday morning services at 10:00 AM and 10:30 AM dominate the Cordova church landscape. We offer both traditional and contemporary worship elements, recognizing that personal preference varies. Our services blend powerful worship music with relevant biblical teaching designed for real-life application.

Dress code: nonexistent. Come in jeans and a t-shirt or your Sunday best. The focus stays on hearts, not hemlines. Authenticity matters more than appearance.

2. Comprehensive Children's & Youth Programs Provide Peace of Mind

Parents need assurance their children receive quality care and age-appropriate teaching. KidsZone at First Assembly Memphis serves infants through elementary-aged children with background-checked volunteers, secure check-in systems, and engaging curriculum. Children learn biblical truths through interactive lessons, worship, and activities designed for their developmental stage.

Youth ministry creates space for middle and high school students to wrestle with faith questions, build friendships, and discover their purpose. Programming includes weekly gatherings, small groups, and seasonal events that foster spiritual growth alongside community connection.

These ministries free parents to engage fully in worship while knowing their children experience age-appropriate ministry that builds faith foundations.

3. Wednesday Night Programming Deepens Connection

Sunday can be your first step, but real relationships usually grow with consistency. Midweek gatherings help you move from “I attended” to “I’m connected.”

We do have a Wednesday menu page available here: Dinner options. (Layne: confirm if Wednesday meals/programming are currently active year-round or seasonal—keeping this general until verified.)

If you’re hungry for more than a weekend experience, look for a place that makes room for prayer, Bible study, and real conversations—the kind of environment where the Holy Spirit can minister and people can actually know your name (Hebrews 10:24–25).

4. Men's & Women's Ministries Address Gender-Specific Needs

Men's ministry creates environments where men challenge each other toward spiritual growth, accountability, and authentic relationships. Activities range from Bible studies to service projects, providing both spiritual depth and practical application.

Ladies ministry offers women spaces to form meaningful friendships, study Scripture together, and support one another through life's seasons. Programming addresses topics relevant to modern women while maintaining biblical foundations.

These gender-specific ministries recognize the value of same-gender community and mentorship in spiritual formation.

5. Online Options Accommodate Schedule Flexibility

Life happens—work shifts, travel, kids’ schedules, health stuff. If you can’t make it in person, online church can be a real bridge that keeps you connected to worship, Scripture, and community until you’re able to be in the room again.

For Memphis locals, I always encourage: use online as support, but pursue in-person community when you can (the Church is meant to be lived together).

6. The Church Reflects Cordova's Diversity & Welcomes All Life Stages

Cordova's population includes young families, established professionals, retirees, and singles across age ranges. A healthy church home mirrors that diversity. We welcome individuals at every life stage and family configuration: single, married, divorced, widowed, parents, empty nesters, and those navigating life transitions.

The "Newcomer's Neighborhood Scan" life hack: Before committing to a church, observe the congregation's demographic makeup during services. Do you see people in similar life stages? Does the ministry programming address needs relevant to your current season? Churches that reflect diverse age groups and life experiences typically offer broader ministry support and connection opportunities.

Take time exploring local community hubs beyond church walls: coffee shops, recreation centers, neighborhood associations, and volunteer organizations. These spaces provide additional relationship-building avenues while helping you understand Cordova's culture and character.

7. Mission & Vision Alignment Determines Long-Term Fit

Doctrinal beliefs and ministry philosophy matter. When you’re visiting churches, I’d encourage you to listen for a few non-negotiables:

  • The authority of Scripture (the Bible is God’s Word, taught clearly)

  • Salvation by grace through faith in Jesus (the Gospel stays central)

  • A real dependence on the Holy Spirit (Spirit-led worship, prayer, and discipleship)

  • A church that helps you actually live out your faith through community and serving

At FA Memphis, we keep those priorities front and center. If you want to read more about our direction as a church, you can start here: mission and vision.

Understanding a church’s values before committing helps you find a home that’s healthy—not just familiar. Ask questions. Take your time. And if you’re not in Memphis long-term or can’t attend locally, Boundless can help you stay connected online.
