News & Peace: Does God Care About Small-Town Churches? What the Rural Church Ministry Partnership Is Teaching Us

When we think about the "big" things God is doing, we often look at towering city skylines or massive stadiums. But what if the greatest revival in our generation is quietly unfolding in towns with only one stoplight?

Does God care about the health and growth of small-town churches?

Yes. God is deeply invested in every local church, regardless of its zip code or population size. Through initiatives like the Rural Church Ministry Partnership, thousands of leaders are being equipped to ensure that small-town communities receive the same spiritual vibrancy and resources as major metropolitan areas.

The Kingdom of God is not measured by the height of a building, but by the depth of its roots in a community. Whether you are walking through the bustling streets of Memphis or driving past the rolling fields of West Tennessee, God’s heart for people remains the same.

The Quiet Giant: 1,200 Churches and 6,000 Leaders

In its first year alone, the Rural Church Ministry Partnership, a collaboration between the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary (AGTS) at Evangel University and the Lilly Endowment, has produced staggering results. This isn't just another program; it is a spiritual lifeline.

In just twelve months:

  • 1,200+ rural churches were reached and impacted.

  • 6,000+ pastors and lay leaders across 31 states received specialized training.

  • $7.5 million in funding was allocated to ensure these communities are not forgotten.

The vision is even bolder: the partnership aims to reach 6,040 rural churches by the end of 2029.

He gathers the scattered and strengthens the few.

Why the "901" Cares About Tiny Towns

You might wonder, “If I live in Cordova, Bartlett, or Arlington, why does a rural ministry in another state matter to me?”

The answer is simple: We are one Body.

At First Assembly Memphis, our mission and vision aren't confined to the city limits of Memphis. Many people who attend our services in Cordova or join us online from Arlington grew up in small towns. They know that a healthy small-town church can be the difference between a community thriving or fading away.

When rural churches are strong, the entire Kingdom is strong. When a pastor in a town of 500 people is trained, encouraged, and resourced, that strength eventually flows back into our urban centers. We are interconnected by the Holy Spirit.

Strength in every community, from the 901 to the nations.

The Assemblies of God Perspective: No One Left Behind

As an Assemblies of God (AG) aligned community, we believe in the 16 Fundamental Truths, which emphasize that the Church is the "Body of Christ" (1 Corinthians 12).

The AG has always had a "pioneer spirit." We don't wait for people to come to us; we go to them. This partnership reflects our core belief in Spirit-empowered ministry.

  • Salvation is for everyone: Geography doesn't limit grace.

  • Baptism in the Holy Spirit: Small-town leaders need the same Pentecostal fire as those in the biggest cities.

  • Divine Healing: Restoration and wholeness are available in every corner of the earth.

What This Teaches Us About Our Local Community

The success of the Rural Church Ministry Partnership offers three vital lessons for us here in the Memphis area:

  1. Numbers aren't the primary metric for God. Whether we have 20 people in a room or 2,000, the Presence of God is what transforms lives.

  2. Every leader needs a tribe. If 6,000 leaders saw the value in joining a partnership, we should see the value in our local Journey groups and church family.

  3. Investment matters. The Lilly Endowment’s $7.5 million gift is a reminder that when we invest our time and resources into the Kingdom, the ROI (Return on Investment) is measured in souls.

1,200 Churches. 6,000 Leaders. One Kingdom.

Take Action: How You Can Support the Movement

You don't have to be a rural pastor to participate in this Kingdom momentum. Here is how you can help:

  • Pray for the 6,040: Commit to praying for the rural churches that are currently being reached. Ask God to give those pastors fresh vision and energy.

  • Connect Locally: If you’re new to the Memphis area, don't stay isolated. Whether you're in Bartlett, Germantown, or Cordova, your presence strengthens our local "body."

  • Invite Others: Use our digital tools at Boundless Online Church to invite friends from back home, wherever "home" might be, to a community that cares.

Life Takeaway: You Are Never Too Small for God’s Purpose

If you have ever felt like your contribution doesn't matter because you aren't in the "spotlight," let the Rural Church Ministry Partnership be your encouragement. God is moving in the quiet places. He is raising up 6,000 leaders to reach the "unseen" towns because, in His eyes, every person is a priority.

Whether you are part of a massive online congregation or a small prayer group in Arlington, TN, your faith is a vital piece of the global puzzle.
