News & Peace: How Can We Find True Peace While Global Tensions Dominate the Headlines?

In a world where "Breaking News" notifications feel like a constant weight on our chests, finding a moment of quiet can seem impossible. Between geopolitical conflicts, economic shifts, and the rapid pace of social change in 2026, the global atmosphere is thick with tension.

How can we find true peace when world headlines are so overwhelming? True peace is found by anchoring our hearts in the presence of Jesus Christ rather than the stability of world events. By practicing intentional spiritual disciplines, such as Scripture immersion, "digital Sabbaths," and Spirit-led prayer, we can experience a peace that surpasses understanding, regardless of the news cycle.

The Weight of a 24/7 News Cycle

As we navigate the middle of 2026, the mental health impact of global events has reached a tipping point. Recent data suggests that nearly 1 in 5 people worldwide are currently living with a mental health condition exacerbated by "headline fatigue" and the secondary trauma of witnessing global conflict through our screens.

We weren't designed to carry the weight of the whole world's suffering on our own. When we try to process every crisis in real-time, our nervous systems stay in a state of "fight or flight." This is where the Gospel offers a different way to live.

Defining Our Foundation

To move forward, we must understand the biblical language of peace.

Term

Biblical Meaning

Shalom

More than the absence of war; it is wholeness, completeness, and flourishing in God.

Sanctification

The lifelong process of being set apart for God and growing in His character.

Repentance

A change of mind and heart that leads us away from worldly anxiety and toward God's truth.

Baptism in the Holy Spirit

An empowering experience for believers to witness and live with supernatural strength (Acts 1:8).

The Pentecostal Perspective: The Comforter in the Chaos

At First Assembly Memphis, we believe that the Holy Spirit is not just a theological concept but a present Comforter. Jesus promised in John 14:27: "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid."

This "not as the world gives" peace is the cornerstone of our faith. While the world tries to find peace through policy, wealth, or isolation, the believer finds it through the Holy Spirit's indwelling presence. This is a peace that holds steady even when the headlines are terrifying.

5 Practical Steps to Guard Your Peace

If you find yourself spiraling after checking your phone, here are five practical ways to reclaim your peace today:

  1. Practice a "Digital Sabbath": Set aside specific hours, or an entire day, where you disconnect from news and social media. Replace that time with reading the Word or spending time with family.

  2. Anchor Your Day in Scripture: Before you read the news, read the "Good News." Start your morning with a Psalm (like Psalm 46 or 91) to frame your perspective.

  3. Engage in "Breath Prayer": Use simple, short prayers throughout the day. Inhale: "Lord Jesus," Exhale: "Have mercy on me."

  4. Find Your "901" Community: If you are in the Memphis area, don't isolate. Join a small group or attend a service at FA Memphis to remind yourself that you aren't alone.

  5. Serve Someone Else: Anxiety often makes us turn inward. By serving others in the Memphis community or through global missions, we shift our focus from our fears to God's work.

Peace as a Missionary Tool

In 2026, a peaceful Christian is a powerful witness. When everyone else is panicking, the person who stands on the rock of Christ becomes a lighthouse. Our mission at Boundless Online Church is to take this peace to the ends of the earth, reaching those who are isolated or homebound and feeling the brunt of global anxiety.

Whether you are in Cordova, Bartlett, or halfway across the world, the invitation is the same: Come to Jesus. He is the Prince of Peace, and His Kingdom is not shaken by earthly headlines.

Life Takeaway: You Are Not a Victim of the News

The enemy uses fear to paralyze the Church. But as children of God, we have been given "a spirit not of fear but of power and love and a sound mind" (2 Timothy 1:7). Your peace is a gift from God that the world didn't give you, and the world cannot take away.
